He was mad at the injustice of it and the “mysterious ways” copout that dismisses that injustice. His mother devoted so much time to good works and prayer and just gets crippled by a tiny blood vessel in the brain at 33.

@Khorne Berzerker How does that make sense to you when you say it? Why do apolegetics always blame the bad shit on fundamentalists like it doesn't rip the foundation from under you? There wouldn't be any problems like this if the fundamentals of Christianity weren't themselves flawed. "Fundamentalist" wouldn't have such a negative connotation if the fundamentals of whatever the subject may be weren't negative also.

Pay close attention to his lyrics and you will see that he’s not mad at God, he’s sad that the faith in Christ actually caused a rift between him and his mom during her years of suffering. He couldn’t identify with her. Maybe even a little jealousy that she was closer to God and Jesus than she was with him....

Art is the miracle of transforming loss, struggle and suffering into something others (and yourself) can expierence as healing, as katharsis. It's a manifestation of beauty out of misery. Isn't it a saying that the worst artist is one who is totally satisfied with life? I mean it's definitely true for Blues! If I would believe in god I would mean that art is the one thing we have to rise above all that mundanity and ordineriness and be a little more like god or take his perspective. But of course I am making the mistake here to think of intellectuality as something superiour to mundanity. Well I wish it would be. Music and art comforts me in that way. In the end I think everything is the same. Duality. Endless dialectic - thesis antithesis synthesis. Yin Yang. Our desire to compare things to value anything at any time without exception if we want to or not is our nemesis. Our inability to deal with coincidence and randmoness in combination with fate which drives us into a believe in a (not random) afterlife which will give everything meaning in retrospective, our struggle to find meaning in sense in things is deeply human. Which is why we would rather be like god because we don't like being human at all. Fragile, mortal, with little control, knowing the right way but to weak to stick to it and all that. There is no deeper meaning. Only now.

His mother was alive at this point. She was paralyzed and left in a bad way. I always took this as he would use her as an inspiration to not be a part of religious blind Faith and that his anger was with her God not as much with her. In the later songs he views her relationship with God in a different light.

just to add a little context to this, Judith had been faithful, that did good work; volunteering in soup kitchens, missionary type work earlier in her life. She was hit by a drunk driving pedophile which caused her paralysis and she remained faithful after. This song is basically about 1 person questioning anothers faith, How in the face of such hypocritical tragedy can you remain faithful?

I believe it’s a matter of perspective. When I was in the ministry full time and being the lowest pastor on the totem pole, I was given the responsibility of hospital visits. I was always told “Go pray for a healing” I’ve entered hospital rooms and for some reason, know that death was in the room. I had been admonished for praying for the assurance of “FAITH”... “Too be absent from the body...” “Oh death, where is you sting?”... I was encouraging people to embrace the miracle of the cross, I was rebuked for not praying for the power of healing... What better healing than “Everlasting Life”?... I left the ministry... So, when I first heard this song I understood his angst, at the same time it speaks to me as a testimony of HER FAITH... Not sure if he meant it that way, but that what it says, or at least what I heard.

Great song, one of my favorite by Maynard, and you guys really did it justice with your breakdown. The truth is, I’m an atheist who grew up in an extended evangelical family. But I’m the rare atheist who actually respects folks who have the strength to stand by their faith. I know a lot of Christians who would refuse to even listen to this song, who’s faith isn’t strong enough to be challenged by Maynard’s anger at God. You guys really showed the strength of your convictions by seeing his situation for what it was, and not judging a guy who was obviously in a lot of pain when he wrote it. The rest of your trilogy is going to be just as great I’m sure.

Dude, very similar to how I grew up. Very traditional church of Christ/Baptist. I eventually walked away from my faith. Most of my family turned their back on me because I had a different belief, I'm a hippy, believe in the universe and oneness shit. My dad couldn't bear the thought of many things of my life and when I hit rock bottom he attacked instead of helped. He couldn't handle a poem I wrote that I posted, or The Doomed. He was disappointed that I wasn't sharing his same faith and held it against me. So this much of Maynard songs hit some for me.

He's raging against his mother's faith, unable to reconcile his love for her with her completely alien (to him) faith in something that he would do nothing but blame if put in her shoes. I loved how you guys tease the meaning out of the song. I really struggled with this song for years but am getting a lot out of it now. Came across your channel from the Cradle of Filth reaction actually. I have a background in theological studies and a love for metal, so I find the perspective of people who approach rock and metal from a scriptural framework fascinating. Tool and APC are two of my favourite bands of all time, so as soon as I saw the rest of your output I was hooked! Gojira too! And Devy! This song spoke to me on so many levels. My father had a stroke and was paralyzed when I was 9. My mom and him divorced. My mother died when I was 12. I had to take care of my father and I would hear him praying every night before he went to bed. When I first heard Judith years later I identified with it so much. Not only did he do it for my father and mother, he did it all for me.

In the last few months I have got into watching music reaction videos and I have to say I enjoy and appreciate the way you both react to music more then the rest. Very analytical and deep. I can't say your perceptions are wrong about this song but I perceive that Maynard is not mad at his mom but baffled or confused at her faith. I believe he is saying why are you not as enraged as me about your unearned short comings. Just my opinion. And in case you didn't know the band always writes all the music first and gives it to Maynard then he comes up with the melodies. Then begins to write the lyrics so the emotion of the music always dictates the emotion of his lyrics. Keep up the great work. I hope nothing but the best for the two of you.

thank you for your great reaction. Jimmy - TOOL : is a song about his feelings as a boy of 11 years when his mother got paralyzed. Wings for Marie pt. / 10000 days ( wings for marie pt. 2) is a beautiful ode to his mother. songs definitely belong together so it will be a long ride. Lyrics are genius. Music is out of this world. You will enjoy it very much. As i will enjoy your reaction :-)

Hey thanks. ;) I know you must get a ton of requests, But I have something a bit different. There are a lot of reactions videos out there right now dealing with the the size of suns and the universe and so forth. I see mostly musical reactions in your que may I suggest Albedo 0.39 from Vangelis from the album of the same name. If you have watched the Cosmos series you have heard the song Alpha. A potent song in it's own right. Albedo 0.39 is a scientific description of the earth set to some really cool sounds. Even if it is not something you think would work on your channel it is still a cool song to listen to. Again thanks and I look forward to your posts.

I think this speaks more to the struggle to find ones way through the grieving process. Questioning faith when someone so significant as his mother endured such tremendous pain and suffering is understandable and predictable given that she held her faith in such high regard. I take this as a more of a commentary on his personal struggle in that moment, sharing the cup of emotion that overfloweth. Vin is right though, the honesty is important. Sharing that level of emotion with someone who might otherwise be suffering alone might give someone the hope to know they’re not alone and that it is indeed survivable.

I personally believe the best way for people to grow is through suffering. No other emotion gives you the same deal that suffering does; you can either move on and ignore it, you can fight and let it destroy you, or you can embrace it and grow from it. A person who has everything, will learn nothing. It’s because we suffer that we have such influential and brilliant artists such as Maynard

I don’t comment on many videos but I wanted to share my take with you. I believe this song is a conversation with his mother before she passes. Not an actual conversation but a story to illustrate how true of a believer his mother was and how angry and grief stricken he was. Since Maynard always layers meaning there is the psychological story of how grief and tragedy, not only can fracture your life (like we hear about in Jimmy by Tool), but how we can lash out with misplaced anger. Maynard often uses this conversation technique in his writing. He often uses different voices or maybe adds effect to part of his lyrics so you can differentiate the back and forth or duality of meaning in his singing. Anyway, to make it brief and simple, the conversation goes like this. Anger voice is him speaking to his mom. He is obviously overwhelmingly angry and distressed. Putting full blame on god. I believe he is blaming god specifically because his mother is strong in her faith so it makes it an easy target to focus on. His mother’s only line is repeated throughout the song. “He did it all for you”. She is telling him that god has done what he has done to benefit him (Maynard) and that she is ok with what has transpired and it will help him grow and understand and ultimately help use this paired with his gifts to help many others. Perhaps if you listen to the song again you can see what I’m trying to say. Thanks!

I like this song because like you said, it’s very clear what he’s saying and I honestly think that more people should, but also because I’m not a believer because I have not been able to reconcile scenarios like this, and others far worse, in a way that leaves any positivity for not just religious belief, but the god idea in general. That being said, I appreciate hearing people like yourself take the time to listen to and break down your thoughts.

Mom was still alive. "Judith" is Maynard admonishing his mother for still having faith after she was paralyzed. "Pray to the one who left you broken down and paralyzed..." 10,000 Days, the album is entitled that because she died approximately 10000 days after she was made into a quadriplegic.

I read that Maynard basically said this song is about how his mother's church friends would encourage her and pray for her while she was with them, and then they'd go home and talk behind her back about how bad off she was. There's a video here on KZbin where he explains it in more detail. Just search A Perfect Circle Judith Maynard Commentary. There's also a couple other videos where he explains the meaning of a few other APC songs. It's commentary from A Perfect Circle's aMotion DVD.

I really like your Christian perspective on these videos. I'm not religious but I was raised Christian, have personally read the entire bible, and have done thousands of hours of studies on the bible and its formation, I still study it to this day even though I've been an atheist for 7 or so years now. I really love your explanations and interpretations because although I don't agree with what you believe I very much understand what you're talking about, know all the references you make and I feel like I can really see things through the lens that you guys are seeing them. It's actually really enjoyable even from the perspective of a non-believer :) and I love Maynard so that helps haha
