YEA BOI. Josh Freese is a killer drummer. He's actually kind of MVP for this track if you ask me. He really drives the rhythm and manages to almost make the drums feel as light and velvety as Maynard's vocals. XD

that crescendo eruption (about 8:20 into this vid but 3:30 in song) is one of my favourite moments in music ever. still remember the whole body goosebumps first time i heard it as a teen. i'm a fan of all maynard's work, but this album (and song in particular) was monumentally impactful for baby me. i didn't get the recovery angle as a kid, but was drowning in religious trauma, so interpreted the lyrics in that context. 'your halo slipping down to choke you now' felt directed at the abusive, hypocritical church leaders in my life. that's the powerful and personal part about art; how we can interpret our own meaning. so stoked to see your reaction to this song.
@Greatmeasures

I’m with you. The crescendo never gets old. I can definitely see how the religious trauma would be relatable, especially in this song. That’s an interesting perspective to digest this song through.

Same. I had one of the happiest and most magical moments of my life to this tune. What an era this was. I feel like it was the last great 90's-early 00's style album that went emotional *full send*. Something changed in music and society after this period. We sort of fell far past that "peak of your civilization" moment Agent Smith so famously quipped about 21st century history in the Matrix. It's also rare for any album to be quite this raw, when both sending out loving/vulnerable vibes... and yet also raw and unvarnished when embodying the impulses of someone who is enslaved by something in life.

Yes, as a life long Tool enthusiast from the beginning I know that most of us loved APC when they came out. Having said that, as an SP/Iha and overall APC enthusiast, I still like the first APC album better than anything and it doesn't have Iha. I do like later APC albums, but nothing even comes close to Mer De Noms. Also, as a recovering addict (20+ years of active addiction and now 12+ years of being clean) I do absolutely love 13th Step. Just not as much as Mer...

@@Greatmeasures Thank you very much. I've been through a lot of crap in my life, but nothing as tough as staying clean. I don't care what anyone says, it's a daily battle and I think about getting high every day, but I weigh the pros and cons every time I think about it and luckily have made the right choice for a long while now. Lucky to have a loving support system now (wife and kids) which is something I rarely had before I met my wife. I was in NA for a long time and know the process and steps very well, but I stopped going because I can't even do the first step without lying to myself and my fellow addicts and so I stopped going altogether (not one to be a hypocrite), but I still talk to people in the groups when it gets really bad and my wife is not around. Sorry for letting it all out, but reminiscing about this album tends to bring it out...

My best friend bought this album for me while I was in a long-term program in a rehab. Needless to say it struck a chord. In the program (NA, AA, etc) the thirteenth step is dating and or having sex with other addicts in the program. I don't necessarily thing thats what Maynard was referring to though. Been clean since 2006 and still put this album on and reminisce. Honestly the time in that program was some of the best in my life to this day. Made good friends (and lost more) and had a really great job. Damn I miss those days and the people who unfortunately couldn't fight those demons.

Wonderful track. On the DVD, Maynard explains over commentary the meaning of many of the tracks. Which is something he rarely does. Such a great album, and for me very important as it came out when I was getting sober in rehab. Thanks for your work fellas. Oh yeah, please consider a reaction video for The Pet. It’s about the disease talking to the addict. Pure gold.

J, your commentary is spot on for a lot of us Maynard fans. Tool hits the head, APC hits the heart (and Puscifer hits the dick 🤣) This song is one of my top favs from APC. My interpretation of it personally is extremely dark. My mom passed when I was 11 (she was a pianist, private voice/piano teacher and HS choir director) and my child self still deals with blaming myself for it though I didn’t know she was sick a for a time and couldn’t help more back then. The halo is a ring of guilt to me. The stranger off this album hits very close too. Mom’s been dead for 27 years and I’ve addictions for years as a result of poor coping. I haven’t ever been able to listen from an addict’s pov…time’s a coming. Thank you both.

I agree with all that’s being said here. How do you amend all the dead thought to me… To me that is all the people influenced or encouraged to get high or drunkened on the path of one’s own self destruction. The person has found a path to recovery, but there are a path of dead folks that was left along the way that never will. I never post on these things and am an alcoholic. Very grateful for these posts.

What an incredible song. I've always wondered if Maynard deliberately came in on that crescendo @3.33 "With Your Halo Slipping...." , as a nod, firstly to the Trinity, being the third minute of the song, and also 33 obviously representing the age Christ died. Considering he's a little curious, and angry, as to how his God is going to make amends to the dead. Maynard being Maynard, he must have known this.
