Absolutely brilliant album!! It's also worthy to note it's a concept album so it should be listened to beginning to end to see it.

Josh Freese does some amazing drum work.

As a huge APC fan, thanks for the honest review as always David. Fitting score. It's more of a dark vibe song with deep lyrics, so more impressive on emotion than on musicality. I do like the melodies, but as you say, simple, nothing overly impressive. Cheers ✌🏻

Pet is my fav on this album. There's another version of Pet that's heavier called Counting Bodies Like Sheep To The Rhythm Of The War Drums, check it out.

This song in concert sounds even better. When i saw them live this song stuck out more then any other.

Josh Freese shows why he's one of the best drummers in the biz, his playing is so tasteful, almost lyrical. He plays with such creativity and knows how to use space very well. The master of NOT overplaying. I feel like you're not too hot on it as a individual piece, but it works FLAWLESSLY in the context and flow of the album.

I saw an interview with Maynard that he sometimes has to push Josh to play more randomly, he can be very clean and held back, Maynard is close with him and they are on a deep level on what works for APC.

I always loved how crisp the drums sounded especially after coming outta that murky intro

I used to try to jump to the peak right away, but she said no. Let it start with a slow and rhythmic groove and keep building and building until you reach a Crescendo! .... after that, things were much better between us. 😇😇😎

A tension building short and sweet story with many subtle layers, given the context of the song. A beautiful piece of art. Thanks for reacting and sharing your refined experience.

Can't say I'm surprised. It's one of the best songs from both the album and the band IMO, but it's also one I would have never asked David to react to.

An incredibly beautiful song, and my first introduction to APC. Not being a lyrics guy, Dave, I can see how you weren't all that impressed with it, which is unfortunate, as the lyrics are extremely powerful and, I feel, typical Maynard calling truth to power. To that end, this album came out during the U.S. occupation in Iraq, so, even though its theme is the 12 steps of addiction recovery (the 13th is apparently sleeping with your therapist), many took the song as a condemnation of President Bush (Maynard has playfully denied this). As "13th Step" is what I would consider a perfect album, I'd look forward to more of your reviews from it. "Weak And Powerless", "Blue", and "The Outsider" are all VERY powerful works by, what I feel, is an extremely underrated band.

"When the levee breaks" is an awesome cover. Maynard has that way of making it his own. He does it with Tool's rendition of "No quarter" which I would highly recommend David reacting to if he hasn't already. Basically they took that song away from the legendary Led Zeppelin. No offense to Zep fans.

Expect David to keep it real and he don't disappoint. I pretty much predicted your reaction. It's a good song, and that's about it. I love singing with all that Maynard does so it's special to me so.... Good Job. Spiral Out Keep Going🤘
