I think that’s a super outdated quote though, and I’d agree with it not being a thing. During the V is for era, sure, but I don’t think anything in the last few albums reflect on libido. If anything, they talk more on nature.

I've heard this too, it makes sense. Especially when you take into account, that A Perfect Circle , musically is founded by the guitarist Billy Howerdel, and he had intended the band to be fronted by a female vocalist.

Maynard's mother didn't die when he was young, she had a brain hemorrhage when he was 11 that left her completely paralyzed but she lived another 27 years. She died in 2003, before 10,000 days was written, that's what the title means, the amount of time she had to live in this completely debilitated condition but never lost her faith. After her stroke, Maynard had to go live with his dad, who had been divorced from her, because she couldn't take care of him anymore. The song "Jimmy" off Aenima is written about that experience.

From Greek mythology
@ScreeFi440
@ScreeFi440 Жыл бұрын
@@MultiKartr Yeah, he was referring to the Greek myth about Orestes, who's the one who had to kill his mother to avenge his father. These lyrics evoke (for me) an image of Maynard by her hospital bed as she's sustained on life support, wrestling with knowing it's time to let her go, but wanting "one more peaceful medicated moment" with her before telling the docs to turn the machines off. Whether or not that actually happened, it's a powerful feeling that one might feel echoes of in other situations. I understand that he finished his teens living with his dad, as his mom had remarried to a strict asshole type that Maynard clashed a lot with. I can imagine a young man wanting to be there for his beloved and debilitated mother, and maybe protect her in her vulnerable state with this asshole, but needing to "cut away the umbilical residue" from her emotionally in order to get somewhere safer to finish growing up, and the feared consequences of that decision he would grapple with. Oddly I never looked up lyrics to A Perfect Circle songs - I just got taken by the vibe of the song and didn't feel I needed them. But I should change that habit. ...It's Maynard.

She was not completely paralyzed. After the stroke, she was partially paralyzed, and was in a wheelchair-bound. She died after 27 years like that. Or, 10,000 Days. Hence, the name of Tool's song, and album title.
@arzuagas2
@arzuagas2 Жыл бұрын
Glad you loved it!!! The connection is Maynard wished he could have been more like Orestes and pull the plug on his mother and end her suffering in his eyes. "One more medicated, peaceful moment " (ease her pain and give her peace) "I don't want to feel this overwhelming hostility" (anger at God for putting his mother through everything, anger at his mother for her faith through it all, anger from everyone else when he pulls the plug) "gotta cut away, clear away and sever this umbilical residue keeping me from killing you " (double meaning, umbilical cord tethers life between mother and child. If he could pull the plug or cut the cord it would end her suffering but also her life. He doesn't think he could do it because she is his mother. Umbilical cord is keeping him from killing her)

Best APC song in my opinion, and some of Maynard's finest writing and vocal work. The song does not necessarily have to be autobiographical. Maynard may just be expressing the pain and conflict of the story itself. Their song don't necessarily need a central meaning. You hear this many of Tool's complicated works.
@soth1sol
@soth1sol Жыл бұрын
there is a central meaning, tho, in that every single "mom/mother/mary/marie/mer/ocean of chaos" reference can also refer to this whole "frown out your ONE face" "weap in shades of indigo" patient "part warrior" divine feminine (see stinkfist, schism m/v's), within us all... merkaba: omniscient omnipotent omnipresent w/o judgement wings for marie / 10000 days: judith marie, unconditional one maria - ratm: "these are her mountains & skies & she radiates & through history’s rivers of blood she regenerates & like tha sun disappears only to reappear - maria - she’s eternally here, her time is near never conquered but here" the patient: "a groan of tedium escapes me, startling the fearful. is this a test? it has to be, otherwise i can't go on. draining patience, drain vitality. this paranoid, paralyzed vampire act's a little old. (talkin' bout THE GRUDGE, same "part vam-pire") but i'm still right here giving blood, keeping faith and i'm still right here."

thomas, the doubter ...bill hicks (who mjk references as inspiration throughout his entire career) would often use thomas the doubter throughout his comedy. "here's TOM with the weather!" (side note: mr. show fans may remember "highs & lows weather report" sketch feat bob odenkirk in a yellow not-so-sub marine type craft ...that i believe may pay homage to hicks here, and also hermetic alchemy, not unlike beatles, but i digress...) from disposition: "watch the weather change"^ (song from perspective of thomas the doubter) jesus & the brontosaurus ...story. from memory? and jesus and His disciples walked towards nazareth but oh the trail was blocked by a giant brontosaurus, with a splinter in his pawww. the disciples did run a'screamin' "i'm sure gonna mention this in my book" said luke. "well, i'm sure gonna mention this in MY book" said john. "mmmm, i'm not sure what i saw", SAID THOMAS. "it was a big fucking lizard, thomas!" said matthew... but jesus was unafraid, he took the splinter out of the brontosaurus's paw, and the brontosaurus became His friend. and jesus sent him to scotland to live in a loch were he can live attracting fat american families with their fat american dollars." and jesus wept, i believe is the next verse... oh also, terence mckenna has a fucking amazing way of interpretting the story of thomas the doubter (his favorite biblical verse) ...i recommend mjk fans check it out since it is right up his alley. um, it kinda resembles what's happening in stinkfist m/v. transcript: my favorite story in the gospels, and this shows you how ... i am, my favorite story in the gospels, is the story of the apostel thomas. because you will recall that after the crucifixion - this is a good place to end, this is an alchemical story - after the crucifixion christ appeared to the apostels in the upper room in jerusalem, 40 days after, and thomas was not there. i don't know where he was, somewhere, they sent him out for sandwiches or something. anyway he came back, and they said "the master was with us" and he said "come oooon you guys," he said, "you been smoking too much red lab we brought in 3 weeks ago," and they said "no no the master was with us," and he said, "unless i put my hand into the wound, i will not believe it." so then time passed, and then christ came again to the apostels, and thomas was among them on this second get go, and christ walked in and kicked off his overshoes and looked around the room, and he said "thomas, come forward, put your hand into the wound," which he did, which he did. now, people have different interpretations of this story, my interpretation of it ... is that alone among all human beings, in all of human history, only one person was ever so priviliged as to be allowed to touch the resurrected body, it was thomas the doubter, who was allowed to touch the resurrection body because he didn't believe, and so if you want to touch the resurrection body, be very careful with where you commit your belief, keep your eyes open, stay smart, take it easy... - terence mckenna from "pushit": take care not to make me(christ/46&2) enter 'cause if i do we both(/44&2)" may disappear 44&2/lead = false sense of seperation, ego 46&2/gold = true nature, unconditional one

Orestes was one of King Agamemnons sons in Greek mythology, and was not present when Agamemnon returned from the Trojan War with the Trojan princess Cassandra as his concubine, and thus Orestes was not present for Agamemnon's murder by Aegisthus, (the lover of his wife, Clytemnestra - Orestes' mother). Seven years later, Orestes returns from Athens, and avenges his father's death by slaying both Aegisthus, and his own mother Clytemnestra. Orestes goes mad after killing his own mother, and he is pursued by the Erinyes (Furies), whose duty it is to punish any violation of the ties of family piety. He takes refuge in the temple at Delphi; but, even though Apollo had ordered him to kill his mother, the god is powerless to protect Orestes from the consequences. A trial before the gods is held, and upon closing of the trial, the goddess Athena votes on the verdict last, announcing that she is for acquittal; the votes are counted and the result is a tie, resulting in an acquittal in accordance with the rules previously stipulated by Athena. For bearing his responsibility in the murder, the Erinyes are converted into the Eumenides, who now offer him wisdom and council.

If you want to see an APC fan Weak and Powerless, ask them to pick between "Orestes" and "3 Libras", most can't handle the Gravity of such a choice. "Eat the Elephant" is their newest album; I listen to it By and Down the River as I watch the ducks ruffle their Feathers; they never let me Pet them. But it's peaceful, time slows through the Hourglass - near there is my favorite Rose, so pretty, like a Sleeping Beauty. That whole first album is incredible! I'm assuming that you know that the guitarist Billy Howerdel is actually Tool's long term guitar tech and writes most of the music? Such a talented guy!

That amazing guitar is brought to you by my "future husband" (kidding, he's already married) Billy Howerdale. The man isn't a regular human...he's part human, part guitar. Love ya Billy 💜

His mother died after this song was released. But she was crippled for the last 30 years of her life. And as an Athiest, he struggled a lot with how she was so faithful to a God that broke her

APC are an amazing band. Along a similar ‘moody’ vibe, The Noose and 3 Libras are definitely worth checking out. But so many great songs: Judith, The Outsider, Blue, The Hollow, Disillusioned, So Long and Thanks for the Fish etc etc

In Greek myth. Orestes is the son of Agamemnon and Clytemnestra. While Orestes is away, his mother kills his father. Later on, Orestes comes back to avenge his father, killing his mother and her lover, Aegisthus. However, breaking family ties is a terrible offense to the Erinyes, the Furies that even gods fear. They pursue Orestes around Greece, and he finds salvation in Athena’s temple, where the goddess makes a trial and acquits Orestes....Oh yeah, perhaps Maynard & Billys best vocal performance... Friggin awesome. My favourite APC song!... PS - Jeff Friedl on drums here. He was (no longer) with bassist Matt McJunkins (playing here) with Maynard in his other band Puscifer, who are amazing as well.

Maynard always puts many layers into his lyrics and I knew who this song was about but I kind of take it as a tragic ending to a co dependent relationship and severing the bond that is killing both of you in different ways

I think the top rated comment on song facts about this sums it up pretty perfectly. Actually, I think the name of the song actually does say it all. In Greek mythology, Orestes mother killed his father...but that's only the beginning of the story, which parallels the entire song. the first line says as much: "Metaphor for a missing moment, pull me into your perfect circle"... Anyway, Orestes was bound to avenge his father's death, and to do so, he had to kill his mother. And that's the kicker, and the perfect circle, because the Furies (Greek minor goddesses) were involved. Had he not avenged his father's death, they would judge him guilty...but for killing his mother, they also judged him guilty, and as a punishment, they drove him insane. There was no real out for him...he had to kill his mother, but the fact that he was of her flesh damned him. I think the song is about that...relationships that seem to be circular: when things are going wrong, and you feel the need to lash out, to hurt the other person...when you hate them enough to want to chip and peel and scrape away the ties binding them to you, your love for them, so that you can strike at them, kill them the way they're destroying you. It's about those times when we don't want to love someone, we're trying to stop, so that we can destroy the "us" that is causing the pain.

Love this and all APC songs, but my favorite is The Noose! I don’t really know why, but that song I can listen to over and over again! There’s just something about it! Check it out when you get a chance

As good as this version is from Red Rocks, you'll be amazed by his voice on the studio version. There are some great bootlegs of it from APC's early years as well.

JFC nearly 23 years since this albulm was released. I had to go and look cause my heart jumped a beat, 'as it really been that long?' I asked myself, and yes. @Polo love your reactions to Tool and PC but please do not remind your audience of how many years have passed, and therefore how old they are 😭 Feels like only a few years ago, how life flies by when you have a great soundtrack to it.
