imo Liz & blue bird still the best, and the fact they didn't qualify to national with that song is crazy

I really really loved the episode and the whole series as well (not only third one but the whole story). I don't know if the original source (the novel) has been fully adapted and if there are some variations from it but certainly KyoAni has realeased a real MASTERPIECE!. The only negative point is...... THAT IS FINISHED!!!! 😭 Well. A REWATCH IS NEEDED...

Hugs are not common in japanese culture. In fact, the hugs in this anime are probably low-key shocking to a Japanese audience. Maybe im exaggerating a bit, but not by a lot. They really do value their personal space. Comes from living in very dense cities, lots of people with little space. Seen from a cultural context, they're very meaningful. Reina seeking out a hug at the end is character growth.

For sure, they are definitely much rarer in Japanese culture - physical affection is a different beast over there, and I have hoped for years that Japan learns more and more the value of a good hug.

Hugs are not common between members of the opposite sex, but they are normal between female friends in Japan

No, it is not. Hugging between women is common, and there are very different reasons for valuing personal space. If you want to talk about Japan, understand Japan before you talk about it. People like you are called ‘知ったかぶり’ in Japanese.

The comment about knowing it would happen from a writing perspective, I actually disagree. It might be more common in Japan, I'm not sure, but it's very common in these kinds of stories that the main characters *don't* win, to show that it isn't about winning or losing but that you gave it your all, Hibike even constantly drove this point home multiple times with how often characters would say the phrase "so that we don't have any regrets" as in, we can accept our loss if it's fully understood by everyone that we did our absolute best, and that's typically the moral in these stories. The most obvious example is Ash from Pokemon but many sports anime are the same, more often than not, the main characters tend to lose, to teach young people it's okay to lose as long as you did your best. I tend to like this approach because right up until it's announced you really don't know if they'll win or not. It's a 50-50 and you really feel at the edge of your seat, my heart was pounding hoping they'd win despite the unlikeliness, and it makes the win wholly more satisfying. The anime was a fantastic journey!

I agree with the base of what you're saying and I'm glad you said it! But I wasn't just talking from a basic story POV. I'm not sure if you saw my discussion from last episode, but I talked about it there! It's not that I thought 'the main characters win in the end'. My reasoning (simplified) was that in the last episode, they provided us with a character moment for Kumiko where she and Reina had to confront choosing to protect their promise of prioritizing the music over their desire to play together. In this, the audience receives a major loss which is an investment towards this episode's victory. I felt like the writers were only comfortable having last episode be devastating because they knew this one would successfully pay off that investment - it would justify the characters' decisions in that moment. Each Sound Euphonium season end has been a 'These characters won a battle but lost the war' moment. The show has, as you said, continuously driven home the point of not always winning, but it was because of that that I was pretty confident they wouldn't do it here. We as an audience have already been beaten down, and a defeat in this final episode wouldn't have been punctuating that theme, but morphing it almost into something different. If they hadn't won after all of this, it would be more difficult for the audience to accept Episode 12, and it might have left a sour taste in their mouth, without achieving any sort of new ground. But I trusted that KyoAni ABSOLUTELY knew what they were doing, and that's why they were comfortable diverting the source material last episode. Of course, I'm sure others might have different views on the themes of the series, but to me, this was the only way this episode would have gone, taking into account the season's themes!
