Thank you for this review. I have thrown away four toasted sandwich makers because the non stick became too difficult to clean and you cant soak a mains powered device. The cost of electrical or gas power is ridiculous in the uk today so i will look out for one of these. Your reviews are always well considered and well appreciated. Your wife is definitely a keeper for buying these 🙂

Amazon was carrying a Westinghouse model similar, for $27.99. I just bought the next to last one. Hoping my son will expand his cooking skills, as right now his only sandwich repertoire is peanut butter. It is limited to an 800 watt micro, and ours is 1000, but I figure it can be set on 80% power and should work. If not, I have lost more for less potential benefit.

In the U.S., these are sold as “microwave grilled cheese maker” or “panini press.” With all due respect to Mr. Colligan, these “microwave gilling” devices will decrease the lifespan of the magnetron. The upper and lower plates, although PTFE coated, do contain either a thin sheet of aluminum or a polymer impregnated with powdered aluminum (sometimes referred to as an aluminum-polymer matrix). The aluminum, as with all metals, reflects a considerable proportion of radio waves, and thus the electromagnetic energy, back to the originating source; which, for microwave ovens, is the magnetron. Use of these types of devices is counter indicated by all microwave manufacturers, and may invalidate the warranty. Other products which are negligently marked include in-tank toilet bowl cleansing tablets (which damage polymer gaskets and o-rings within the toilet tank), and flushable wipes (which do not dissolve, and clog mainline sewer pipes, as well as municipal sewers).
