Gene is incorrect about a few things. Tuning down a half-step takes E to either E-flat or D-sharp (depending on what key you're in). Tuning down a whole step will take it down to D. And Black Sabbath were tuning down (in their case, a whole step, D-tuning) way before KISS was (hence Sabbath's "doomy" sound).
