Little Women (1949) #WarnerArchive #WarnerBros #LittleWomen
Mervyn LeRoy's directs this classic Technicolor version of the cherished Louisa May Alcott novel. Set during the Civil War, it chronicles the March sisters lives and loves, underscoring the era's expectations about a woman's place in the world. Golden-tressed Elizabeth Taylor portrays pretentious Amy, Janet Leigh is earnest Meg and Margaret O'Brien is dear, tragedy-stricken Beth. June Allyson plays spunky Jo, resolved to be a writer, but unaware that the elusive muse she seeks is the life she shares with her sisters and mother (Mary Astor).
Directed By Mervyn LeRoy
Starring June Allyson, Peter Lawford, Margaret O'Brien

This was C. Aubrey Smith’s final role. He passed away not long after. I grew up with this film and always got weepy during the scene when Beth tells Jo she knows she’s dying. But THIS is the scene that gets me now. Beth, so shy and “scared of strangers,” walks into and through that house to find Mr. Lawrence out in the “garden room,” and just throws her arms around him and kisses and hugs him. There aren’t any sweet movies like this anymore.

I totally agree. The remake of this movie from 2019 brought me here for I didn't realize that there's been several remakes done. I like Mervyn LeRoy's incredible directing in the movie and undeniably agree that this the best remake ever.

Because Elizabeth Taylor was too old to play Amy, they had to change the age order of the sisters in this version to make Beth the youngest instead. I think one of the reasons that this version gets us so emotional is because shy sweet Beth is still just a little girl and so scenes like this and her death tug at the heart strings so much more.

@@saragamsaragan3764Curiously, because she was the young one, in real life Beth's actress is the only one of the entire cast who is still alive (currently 86 years old). Which is ironic since her character is the one who dies and in a scene of this film she says "For some reason I wasn't destined to live a long time"

I think it wasn't the only version where Beth is the little one. Did they also do it in 2019? I think so, since the Beth actress seemed younger than the others.

I enjoy this version almost as much as the 1994 version, and while 1994 is still my favorite, I do think 1949 really nailed the relationship between Beth and Mr. Lawrence perfectly.

Completely agree with this comment. I watched the 1994 one over and over growing up but when I was little, mum would put the 1949 one on for me to watch (like when I was 3, 4, 5 years of age) and I'd sit and watch the whole thing. I'll always love this version too.

I think that piano was cursed. It took out the little granddaughter AND Beth. Somebody burn it before it kills again! Seriously though, for me this is probably the most touching scene in the film and I'm not gonna lie, the moment between Margaret O' Brien and C.Aubrey Smith had me a little misty-eyed. They had great chemistry.

I love this version. The color is typical MGM and the costumes were made I believe by Helen Rose, who went to school with my father in Kalamazoo Mi. They are spectacular. The music is so beautiful. The main theme sounds like it could be a 19th century aire. The acting is lovely and that they changed Beth and Amy in age bothers me not one whit.

Mary Astor: “The girls all giggled and chattered and made a game of every scene. Taylor was engaged, and in love, and talking on the telephone most of the time (which is fine normally, but not when the production clock is ticking away the company's money). June Allyson chewed gum constantly and irritatingly, and Maggie O'Brien looked at me as though she were planning something very unpleasant.“. AND: Mothers in particular were beatified at MGM. . Mary Astor complained that “Metro’s mothers never did anything but mothering. They never had a thought in their heads except their children. They sacrificed everything; they were domineering or else the ‘Eat up your spinach’ type. Clucking like hens.”
