I was stationed at Istres in Jan of 93. The French Air Force maintainers the moved the aircraft after landing were eager to talk about it and they had many pictures on the walls. They used an aircraft tug with tire on top to lower the right wing onto to help transport it. The fire burned through the top and bottom skin of the wing. I saw pictures of all that. They told me, and I have no proof of it, that the aircraft was repaired and flown out. They didn't do the repairs but were familiar with the airframe as they were flying FR135Rs which is a KC-135R adapted to the French Air Force. The 135 is not a 707 but a very close sibling. The data plate on a 135 lists the model as 717 and if parked side by side differences can be seen. Most obvious if the fuselage shape from the front. The 707 is egg shaped with the pointy end down. The 135 is more rounded. I was there as technical and logistical assistance on a lease of 3 USAF KC-135Rs to the French. They ended up buying 5 from the USAF, 2 of the orignial lease and 3 KC135As from the boneyard and modified by Boeing into R models. The third lease aircraft was returned to the USAF and joined the Wing I was assigned to at the time. It was of an earlier series than the French aircraft and would have required different support.
