We had a great family vacation in the town of Helen, North Georgia and with mercury vapor lights out, we saw a number of beautiful species come to the light sheet including a beautiful pine devil moth. Join us on this North Georgia moth collecting adventure.

I live in Stone Mountain, GA, and have not seen many of those species. Mostly I've seen are drab brown and gray types of moths except for an occasional Luna Moth in Spring or Summer. Those yellow and brown ones and the Pink and yellow ones you showed are gorgeous! Do you have the link to a good source to buy the lights from that has good prices? I want to set up something like you have in my yard or porch to see if I can attract more diversity. I just subscribed to your channel, as I love moths and am also looking into breeding some local species to feed my Green Anoles since that seems to be their favorite food. Buying mealworms and crickets can add up and become expensive! If I can find and/or breed free feeders that would be a big help! This winter hardly any moths to be found. Do you know whether they migrate to warmer climates, or do they die off during winter?

Hey thanks for watching and subscribing. Mercury vapor lights are the way to go. They are becoming more and more difficult to find however. The only place that I knew how to get them was Bioquip products but they closed down last year. You can still find stuff on Amazon for mercury vapor light set ups. I would go with a 175 Watt system. It will come with a ballast and a socket. Most of the sockets have the ability to mount on a tripod, which is what I typically do. Moth. Species from Georgia do not migrate. They hibernate as cocoons until weather gets warmer. If you have a mercury vapor light system, you should be able to find insects for anoles spring summer and fall, but may have to supplement with mealworms in the winter. That would be my suggestion.

There was several Luna moths and stag beetles it was just intriguing because where I live not even that far the same equipment and everything I still can’t even begin to replicate the amount off insects that appeared on that night it probably has something to do with the elevation and lower temperatures that promotes such high biodiversity

Hi Devin, Good question. I would imagine that they live there. They fly all the way down through South America and all the way north to Canada. We have them very common in the Florida Keys as well. You’re in So Texas ? That’s an amazing place bro!!!
