This doesn't happen in other media. New movies don't cost more because they had a bigger budget. New albums are still the same price even if they cost millions to produce or were made in someones bedroom on their laptop. Why do games have such a massive price just because they were made by a bigger studio with more resources? Maybe if they made a better game that wasn't a buggy pile of ass these AAA studios would make what they spend back and then some without having to price them at what most people make in a full working day.

@@TalesOfWar: That's not really true. Home video prices have pretty much increased every time there was a new format. @Mogura87 Жыл бұрын
To be fair, if we look at gaming historically, just because a port of something exists it's in my opinion silly to expect every game to be perfect on everything, but that's what we've come to expect in the age of multiplat slop. The PC port of FF7 was a joke, but I would never play the PS1 port of Shadowman when I could play the PC or Dreamcast versions. There has always been a mix of superior original versions and inferior ports, with a host of interesting differences, ever since consoles and micros started receiving arcade ports in the 80's (or even the 70's arguably). There were always a ton of quality console exclusives you couldn't experience on a Commodore 64, but on the other hand the micros had their own strengths in their own ways with a ton of creative and varied software. In the 90's and early 2000's, which in my opinion is the golden era of gaming, there was still a major divide in releases between PC and the consoles with tons of exclusives, but people weren't complaining about everything not being on everything, and I much prefer it that way. I mean just sticking to PC there were a lot more interesting games made specifically for PC in that era (CRPGs, RTSes, physics-driven FPSes like Half Life etc.) than the sloppy seconds console ports that is 95% of AAA games on PC today. Unironically the variety of cool games of AA and AAA budget level across all platforms (PC, console, handhelds) was much better because of divergent hardware, incompatibilities and exclusivity, in addition to lower costs of development of course.

At least when you wait and buy games at bargain bin discounts, you minimize your disappointment when it takes you more than two hours to realize how poorly the game runs. Even then, you're likely to take comfort that modders did the best they could to fix it. Modders are the real heroes of the gaming industry. It truly takes amazing, considerate people to weed through janky games to iron out the flaws. Or make the game look good. Or add new content at all.

Id love to see steph cover the disparity between the previews of redfall by the games media compared to their actual reviews. The lies they told in previews cost people money when they knew the game was garbage

The thing that pisses me off the most about the “it’s a spectrum” argument about PC hardware is that you don’t have to treat it like that. You can find what the average Steam user is running using Steam’s reports, get one, and then use that as your test box. Mobile devs (especially those targeting Android) have been doing something similar for literally over a decade. On mobile, “we’re sorry, but the platform is a spectrum which is why our app runs terribly” does not fly.

I think one reason I never fully committed to PC gaming is that there is always a chance that despite being capable of having an improved version of a game, it wil be significantly worse.
@Bananahammock681 Жыл бұрын
Unless someone is totally tech literate (not an easy thing for some of us smooth brains) and has the cash to continuously pump in to maintain and update their rig, it really is a crapshot on the game being better or worse on PC. It's why consoles are so popular, they are plug in and play... after hours of downloading.
@carn9507 Жыл бұрын
@@Bananahammock681 that's exactly it for me. I do own a PC but it's kinda old now and I just couldn't get on with constant upgrades and costs. I like to just buy a game and know it's designed for the exact hardware I want to run it on with no hassles and no extra costs. It might not always be the absolute most stunning version available but eh, I'm also a retro gamer who plays old stuff on a big TV, even Gameboy on a 50" screen. I'm fine losing a bit of resolution and such in exchange for things just working well.

I think people assumed that the PC market has evolved more from the 90s than it has. In the 90s PC gaming was a secondary use of the PC. Its job was to do computer first and to play games second. I think a lot of players are still in a similar position. They have their school laptop and want to play games with it. That makes the small scale indies the right level of intensity for their lower power systems.

I understand why ports used to be an issue back when systems had very different hardware, DMC 4 was on both the PS3 and 360 so its engine was made with both systems in mind, so a PC port was difficult. But now hardware is very uniform across systems, so it can't be hard to port games from one system to another.

This episode really did remind me how tired I am of seeing people commenting “sure Redfall was terrible but I got it ‘fReE’ from Gamepass so I can’t complain” like that makes it okay and not yet another excuse for game developers to make boring, barely functional software

This is why I love Indy game developers, as too broke to port anything to console in the first place. Downside of some are too cheap/lazy to actually finish the game either.

Since I got burned hard with the deluxe version of NeverWinter Nights 2 I decided to counter the "release now, fix later" attitude of shitty publishers with the "wait for now, buy later (when the game has dropped the price to a third and/or the bugs are fixed). Saved me a lot of grief.

I avoid EA games, because I don't want to get yet another login ID just to play a game I already pay for. I'm also worried about Diablo 4 for a few reasons. Notably would be the corporate HR issues and how it seems to need to be online at all times. I didn't look, but I was never offered an option to play offline. I'm on Comcast internet, so I might as well have dial up. And I pay for the "gig-speed" option. That is bullshit.

In 2017 got into PC gaming, built a fairly good pc for £1500 and use it for video editing alongside gaming. Nowadays, I play CSGO and League on PC, every other game I have a PS5 and Switch for, they run games reliably, and well in 4K and look great, and the exclusives are good. The gaming PC industry continues to be very expensive to keep up with. Even if you buy top of the range, it will become outdated very quickly. And despite the consoles hardware already being less, they are far more reliable than the ports and performance PCs can get.
