“Would the lead steward please come to the flight deck... immediately”. Sounds like one of those in-flight announcements from a dramatic plane crash movie. No one would ever want to hear this in reality. Unfortunately, it’s exactly what the passengers on Air Transat Flight 236 heard as their plane ran out of fuel somewhere above the Atlantic.
It was supposed to be a regular flight for Air Transat from Toronto, Canada, to Lisbon, Portugal. The weather was fine that August evening, and Flight 236 took off without delays. It had 306 people on board. The Airbus was fairly new, with only 2 years of active service. It had two powerful engines, and 5 tons more fuel than is required when it took off. Yet, 8 hours later, when the plane should have touched down in Lisbon, it was nowhere to be seen...

SUMMARY:
- At 05:03 UTC, after over 4 hours of a totally normal flight, the first alarming message came through. The onboard computer informed the pilots that the oil temperature had dropped and the oil pressure was higher than normal on engine 2, that same right engine.
- At 05:36 UTC another warning came through - this time about a fuel imbalance. The pilots, again, thought it was a false alarm and followed protocol for the situation.
- At 05:45 UTC, the pilots made the decision to divert the plane to the Azores and land it at Lajes Air Base. 3 minutes later, they informed Santa Maria Oceanic air traffic control they had a fuel emergency.
- At 06:13 UTC, when the plane was at 39,000 feet (11,880 m) and still 170 miles (273 km) away from Lajes, engine #2 failed completely from lack of fuel.
- They only had one option now - to glide for the rest of the distance to the base. Mr. DeJager, who was the co-pilot on Flight 236, remembers they were flying as if in a simulator dealing with new problems that arose every minute.
- All emergency services were activated on the ground, waiting for the plane to land safely. The pilots realized they only had 15 to 20 minutes and one attempt to touch down safely and save the passengers.
- At 06:45 UTC, the plane finally touched ground at the airbase, but it wasn’t exactly a smooth landing. 14 passengers and two crew members needed some medical help, and two people got seriously injured during the evacuation.
- It turned out that just five days before the incident maintenance staff installed a new right engine. It didn’t come with a hydraulic pump, so they decided to take one from a similar engine and attach it to the new one.
- There was a leak in the fuel hose, and it could have killed 306 people!

Amazing! Praying was mentioned as to what the passengers were doing. Probably everyone was praying. When you are in an aircraft and know that the possibility of getting out alive is slim it's interesting how they all of a sudden become flying houses of worship. People know in their hearts and believe in God at that point.

Quite........If one is going to publish such a "melodramatic" video, it pays to do research and establish what type of aircraft, how many engines there are, how those engines are referred to and which wing they are on. Cut out those silly little graphics. It does not portray yourselves in good light, nor prove your professionalism.
@p2_307
@p2_307 5 жыл бұрын
That same thing annoyed me too. There is only one Airbus plane that has 4 engines, and that is the Airbus A380, and the craft in this video was an A330! Also the cartoon-ish pictures of planes used had two floors. Again, not on an A330, but an A380 (however due to how short the second floor was, it was probably a Boeing 747. Even worse, as Boeing is completely separate to Airbus!). Semi-quoting Fred Mason, if you are going to post a dramatic, even nerve racking video, at the least research what it's about. Being about an Airbus A330, just LOOKING at a picture will tell you that it has one floor, two engines, etc... I did find this video interesting, and enjoyed watching it, but it feels like this guy just Google searches something he heard someone whisper about a few years ago get some inaccurate pictures and throw this mess all together his his bargain bin witch's cauldron known as Windows Movie Maker.

As a pilot, I LOVE flying! And thank you very much for touching on the investigation! Because the fuel leak was inside the engine from the weird pump, all that fuel gushing out was cooling the engine a lot. When engine oil cools down, it becomes less viscous, which is why there were also high oil pressure readings. When the fuel imbalance warning came on and the pilots opened the transfer valve, that only served to worsen the problem by sending fuel from the non-leaking side straight out the gaping hole!

I remember something similar happened to the plane that I took almost 20 years ago. It was an Air Canada 737. The flight was a short one, from Vancouver to Calgary. I sat next to a window very close to the right engine. When the plane was above the Rocky Mountain, I looked out of the window and found something not quite right . Some yellow liquid kept flowing out from a gap in the middle of the engine. The most terrifying thing was the amount of liquid was by no means small. My guessing was there could only be two possibilities; it must be either fuel or lubricant. Anyone of them was no good news. I immediately informed an air steward. She then rushed to the cockpit. Five minutes later, she came back and assured me it was a perfectly normal situation. She also used a heap of technical terms to explain why the yellow liquid flew for such a long time. Normal? How come I have never seen this before. Never! The plane kept flying for another 30 minutes and landed safely. Throughout that period, the liquid did not stop flowing for a single second. However, thanks God anyway. At least, I am still alive to tell the story.

Not really the first "dead-stick" landing. In 1983, a Canadian jet ran out of fuel, and had to be landed on a decommissioned airstrip. This incident has been called "The Gimli Glider." A movie and a couple of cable documentaries were produced.

Poor wording in that it says "ONLY 7600' FROM THE THRESHOLD( of a 10000' Runway)" - i.e. ("only"!) 2400' from the end, or even "with less than a quarter of the runway remaining" would have been more appropriate. I can get over the "basic" graphics everyone's moaning about... 🤦🏻‍♂️ That's not even that much of an issue either in all fairness... planes regularly turn off a runway around that 3/4 mark anyway! A better comparison may be the length of the INTENDED runway if that's a lot closer to the 7600' it took to stop on this DIVERSIONARY one!? 🤔

The title said the plane lost both engines, but at 4:34 it showed a jumbo jet (with 2 engines on each wing) 3. The title said the plane lost both engines, but the thumbnail showed a 4 - engined aircraft 4. At 4:34 bright side said “the pilots tried to save the fuel in engine 1, but it showed engine 3 (which isn’t correct due the the fact that the plane wasn’t a jumbo jet

I actually enjoy flying. Once abt 1 yr and around 10 months ago I was flying with Bulgaria Air and on my plane, for some reason there were too many passengers and they chose me to go on the jump seat in the pilot cabin - like 1M AWAY FROM THE AIRPLANE CONTROLS!!! ALSO, THE PILOTS LET ME SET THE AUTOPILOT SETTINGS: THE HDNG (to 134°), THE ALTITUDE (to 33,000 ft), THE FT/S RISE (I can't remember this one), AND ENGINE SPEED (I think the outer two engines had to be on 400 knots and the inner two had to be 500, but I certainly remember the result Master Throttle, which was 475 knots). Also, they gave me a headset to listen to their communications. Seriously someone was talking absolutely ALL THE TIME!! The pilots also taught me a few things like emergency landings, taxiing, the plane's new APU system (it checks for errors, apparently their plane was the best cuz of this), the emergency hydraulic ejectors (to extend landing gear when there is no electricity in the aircraft), etc. I even got a photo with them! It was amazing - the whole cabin was covered with controls - even the ceiling. And the view while landing was astonishing!

i have seen the actual documentary of this. If im not mistaken ... the inquiry board at the end found the pilots guilty too for not following protocol which lead them to pumping fuel from the right side of the wing to the leaking left side. That caused the plane to run out of fuel. Had they not done that they might have had enough to reach their destination on 1 engine.

I read a similar story of glide landing due to lack of fuel many years ago in Readers Digest. As far as I remember, that incident was also involved with a Canadian airplane. Its fuel gauge was broken, so the mechanics had to measure the required amount of fuel manually; they ended up filling the fuel tank far less than what was needed because they were confused about the newly introduced meter system. The experienced pilot saved all lives on board and the airplane with a successful glide landing on the nearest airport. It is shocking to know a similar incident happened several decades later in an airplane of the same nationality: Canada. In both cases, the pilots were heroic, but the airplane mechanics were incompetent and careless.

I do not enjoy being on a plane without any electronics hooked up to the seat. (I actually never had that in my flights) My favorite part in my airport is that you get on a train to go to where the gates are. There are windows so you can see the outside of the "subway" and if you're a kid my age, which is nine, you'll love it. Trust me.
