What impressed me the most is either how the pilots landed practically blind or how the passengers were so calm

Flying at night, nothing showing on the radar, engines couldn't register the liquid silica on its compressor blades. St Elmo's fire is normal on every flight. The windscreens were being eroded by the volcanic ash.

They managed to restart a few engine at lower altitude, because the air was thicker and more oxygen. The 747 can fly safely with just 1 engine.

It was no problem back then. There were designated seats for smokers and never much cigarette smoke in the air. Cabin air gets refreshed in flight, not recycled.

TBH flight attendants need more recognition. They are the ones who help during safety announcements, evacuations, service, etc. Even pilots need more recognition. I really don't know how flight attendants and pilots deal with these types of situations..... Nice job performing this difficult maneuver!!

Years later a volcano went off in Iceland and All Europe airspace shutdown due to volcanic ash. And this flight was the lesson that the air controllers and airlines adhered to. My friend flew out on last flight out of Italy before shutdown, and was a top news story too , for an air travel warning.
