I always wondered why the sash was worn at "Derry" Aughrim, Enniskillen and the Boyne but it wasn't worn at Londonderry! And With heart in hand, and sword and shield: We'll guard old "Derry's" walls. Why was Londonderry's walls not guarded? lol

Because the city's two names didn't become politically charged until relatively recently.

There was a ten year war. The Irish lost. That war. Then the seige of Derry. This is Protestant propaganda. The city walls have never been breached. Londonderry. The native Irish have been there 5000 years. Amazing Grace, I hate that song.
@henzohewson Жыл бұрын
I agree actually, that song does annoy me. However, whilst I will agree that many histories of Derry are biased towards the Protestants, I don’t think you can say that it is simply propaganda. It is true that there was a siege at Derry, but the notion that “the Irish lost” is incorrect really because it was between a British king and a Dutch prince, with Irish fighting on both sides as well as other nationalities. Nationality wasn’t really a thing in the Early Modern period necessarily so you can’t simply say “the Irish lost”, because who were the Irish? The Irish were both Catholic and Protestant, as they still are to this day in reality. Thats why the Irish flag represents green and orange, with white peace in the middle 🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪
