This poem is about the tragic event with shooting that happened in Lewiston, Maine on October 25th, 2023. This poem reflects the deaf community and the rest who were impacted by the unexpected event. With beloved nature New England embraces, the poem uses subjects from nature to reflect respect, support, care, and love. Poetry be of many interpretations but leading to one thing: embrace the remembrance. Below are video description and transcript.
VIDEO DESCRIPTION:
A black and white video of Ian standing in front of white background. He's wearing a T-shirt, dark curly hair down to shoulder, dark beard, and in the lower left corner is a logo of Maine with "I love you" in sign language with a red heart." The video effect comes with white and black dissolves for transitions to show variations in affect. There is no sound.
TRANSCRIPT:
(sigh)
We are aware of the recent tragic shooting event in Maine.
That kind of situation is very traumatic and has impacted all over the world...
this country...
New England...
and, especially, Maine...
Myself as a poet, knowing that creating a poem will not improve, resolve,
recover from the tragic event 100%...
but the purpose of the poem is to show
respect, support, care, and love.
New England...
in the countryside...
A growing tree with green leaves brightening...
Flowers growing and blooming...
A moose clomping...
A bear rambling and sniffing...
An eagle spreading its wings, flapping and soaring...
Fish swimming and jumping out of water...
(gunshot)
(bang) The moose stopped and frowned...
(bang) The bear stopped and sighed...
(bang) The eagle landed and closed its wings...
(bang) The fish slowly swim deeply...
New England...
all turned to Maine...
where the tree’s first leaf begin to fall...
second leaf falling...
third leaf falling...
and fourth leaf falling...
all dying leaves on the ground...
The moose’s hoofbeats drumming...
The bear’s silhouette pounding...
The eagle’s wings singing...
The fish’s fins thrumming...
Joshua Seal
Billy Brackett
Steve Vozzella
Bryan MacFarlane
All looking in one direction and remembering...
(heartbeat)

Mr. Sanborn, thank you for expressing so beautifully and deeply what most Americans are feeling about the loss of lives from the daily shootings across America. I am from Connecticut and I will never forget the Sandy Hook shooting. I am temporarily living in Texas and will never forget the Uvalde shooting. The grief of those directly involved in all of these shootings is unimaginable.

Magnificent! Deeply touched. Truly unique - eyes and heart through the hands of the Deaf. The best ever. Thank you, Mr. Sanborn. Pray for the 4 and others and their families. Never forget them all since Sandy Hook, amen. 🤟
