Technically, Belly Drum doesnt ignore stat drops - it just raises your Attack by TWELVE stages, which is enough to raise it from -6 to +6. But since a stat maxes out at +6...

The reason that happened is because it works internally by swords dancing 6 times, and it only performs the check to see if it can use the move after the first one.

Fun fact: it was originally planned for Belly Drum to take half of the current mon's health instead of half of the mon's total health (for example, it would lower your health from 75% to 33,5% instead of just taking half of your HP). The reason it was changed is because they realized Snorlax would have been way too broken in Gen 2 (and still was anyways, LOL)

Belly Drum also fails if used w less than 50% HP, but if you were in Sun/Moon that was also a non-issue because Z-Belly Drum's bonus effect was just a mega heal to full HP before using Drum, thus getting a guaranteed Drum up no matter what. I terrorized people with Z-Normalium Huge Power Azumarill bc it really did just tank everything and then start slapping everyone around

Belly drum iron hands with Oranguru as its trick room setter is filthy if you can get away with it. Instruct is a valuable tool for obvious reasons, but Symbiosis is also fantastic utility, because it allows Iron Hands to use a sitrus berry for a better chance at surviving the setup turn and then receive another item from Oranguru, like an iron ball to underspeed other trick room teams or a booster energy to pump its attack even higher. It’s one of my favorite strategies ever.

in "almost any ability" I usebelly drum snorlax with cheek pouch ability and recycle. Snorlax @ Sitrus Berry Ability: Cheek Pouch Tera Type: Normal EVs: 4 Atk / 252 Def / 252 SpD Impish Nature IVs: 30 HP - Belly Drum - Recycle - Body Slam - Earthquake it is a very fun to use set. recycle+cheek pouch is the closest snorlax has to slack off.

I remember playing a Gen 7 draft league. The team had a mega pidgeot and a Gigalith/Exca Sand core that people overprepped for, So I just brought a ton of pivots (Incineroar/Mesprit/Lanturn IIRC) With the Gen 7 pinch berries, Colbur, Shuca depending on matchup and the star. Sub/Bellydrum/Drain Punch Kommo-O with a Salac. At then end of the Season Kommo-o had the most kills by a huge margin even though in the mid season update draft everybody scrambled for answers. Good times. Can highly recommend.

Belly drum is one of those moves that remind people that no matter how hard you try to adapt to a “meta”, it doesn’t completely beat pure game knowledge. It’s a strat that will always exist and remind you that you should always have a way to counter proper setup mons.

Early Gen glitch time: in Generation 2 the check for whether you have enough HP left for a Belly Drum happens after the check to see if your Attack is already maxed out. Except the check for whether your Attack is maxed out is to raise your Attack by +2 and see if it worked. So if you don’t have enough HP for Belly Drum, you still get a Swords Dance off of it in GSC.

One relatively easy to get Belly Drum and suddenly that Snorlax is firing off +6 Pseudo-Priority G-Max Replenishes like there's no tomorrow, absolutely fucking chunking the enemy team in gloriously brutal fashion!

Belly Drum Zen Mode Galarian Darmanitan was the absolute GOAT of my mono Ice playthrough of Sword. Belly Drum gets it down to half health and puts it in Zen Mode so it gets the base Attack and Speed boost ON TOP OF the +6 Attack stages. Absolutely shredded through everything, even resists.

To give a sidebar to the sidebar, Gen 2 Marowak also doesn’t need Belly Drum because this is the one generation where it’s OU* and also using Thick Club, AKA Huge Power as an item. That’s why it can reach that overflow state in the first place: Marowak couldn’t reach that number in Gen 1 anyway, before held items. *It’s also UUBL in RSE before falling off a cliff, where it’s still so violently strong that it can wallbreak sometimes without Swords Dance up, but also you could sneeze on it and it’d die

When it comes to Bellydrum Poliwrath, there's another move I like to use right after... Baton Pass. Don't get me wrong, I'm not the best competitive player, so I've never made it very far in the rankings. However, I love taking Poliwrath with "Follow Me" Magmar into all viable tiers, especially Uber Doubles. While players are giving my defending Magmar the eye-roll, my Poliwrath Belly Drums, and next turn Baton Passes into Aceus with Extreme Speed, Earthquake, Iron Defense, and Recover. I know I have to be imagining it, but the number of times people immediately surrendered, I could have sworn I somehow heard "$#!*" come through the speakers a few times.

My most petty nitpick about S/V is that when you fight alongside Kieran in the epilogue his Poliwrath knows Belly Drum, but also has Close Combat as its Fighting STAB even though Drain Punch works way better with BD, & Kieran’s supposed to be a super strong trainer so he should know this
