Objectives and Key Results (OKR) are appearing in general business literature, but it is hard to get a vendor-neutral perspective on what they are. I have taken a number of images from the web to construct an overall summary.

Thanks Brett, really simple summary , I particularly like the fact you talk about key results being either specific measures or decent milestones to be accomplished that move you towards the objective

I asked my manager if he could give me advice on how to measure my personal activities towards a goal. He told me about OKRs and I was trying to understand it by reading and watching KZbin videos. Videos on OKRs are usually so vague that I hadn't understood it until I watched this. The pyramid showing the time span was specially useful to me. Thanks

I've read several books and articles about OKR's that are very technical and/or vague, and I've been looking on a clear explanation that I can share with my directors and employees, I just found it. Thanks for sharing.

Just a small note for the history. OKRs were created by Andy Grove in response to the failure of MBOs. It was his attempt to "fix" them. Andy called them MBOs, but they were NOT like Drucker's. Since he created them for an internal audience and management books were not so widespread, it wasn't necessary.

Funnily enough I did a video on exactly that for a client a few years ago: kzbin.info/www/bejne/lZvWfaSCis-Cq5I&si=EnSIkaIECMiOmarE. Several clients have executed this - I can go into more detail if you'd like

I worked for years at Oracle. If they were using OKR's I was not privy to it.

Let me call OK Result, why because it set up goal for solve confront problem, like you' ve a problem and let the sub ordinate solve the problem by their team until reach their goal. The weak point of this is can't find the root cause of total organization, so there're still a big problem hidden.

Well, OKR was introduced by Andy Grove back in 70s... So it is not correct to show your historical picture the way you showed it.

This is a really good point. It is tough to be definitive on either when or who invented what. Drucker first started talking and writing about MBO's in the 50's even though The Effective Executive was not published until 1966. Andy stated many times that "OKRs" were a variation of MBO's and never tried to claim they were his invention. The concepts of the Balanced Scorecard are attributed to Allied signal long before Dr Norton's company (Nolan Norton) did their first project at Allied in the early 80's. John Doerr has been very clear that he is not the inventor of OKRs, but expanded on Andy's ideas. And, of course, all these concepts overlap with each other. Each builds on the previous, but also incorporates the increasing wealth of operating information available, increase computer power to use that data, increase pace of business that demands more agile practices, and increase skill-set throughout the organization. In my current slide I just use the publication date of the significant books on each topic, but even that is not intended as a definitive statement about creation or timing.

Brett Knowles thanks for your reply. I got your idea behind that slide now . Sometimes consultants speculate a bit over facts and sequence of theories to prove their ideas ( I might have been guilty with that several times during my careers at Deloitte , PwC and KPMG). But I clearly understand your logic and your good points . Thanks for the valuable content and for sharing your ideas.
