You must be a troll. They did up building codes a number of years ago for hurricanes as was the entire building code for the entire country, based on areas where major weather typically take place. Where things fall down is older buildings not upgraded to newer codes and being on/near major coasts/waterways

If the building codes were tougher, my Grandmothers house is in Cocoa Fla, its been around since the 50's, how many Hurricanes has Fla had since, alot. Houses were built to last a long time back then.

I live about 20 min from cocoa. I also an old house (1963) on the beach. I hate to say it but we just get lucky in Brevard County. The only actually bad storms we had in my lifetime were Frances and Jeanne in 2004. They were the last ones to really hit us and we got ROCKED. Lots of destruction. We have just gotten lucky that we never get hit where we get storm surge. If we did, our buildings would look just like the other places that have gotten decimated recently. Our little pocket was the only one that didn't get really bad conditions during both Ian and this one.

The Mayor does not want to over or understate conditions without proof. Videos may not be current due to transmission difficulties. Complaints about FEMA have not been justified and are generated by Trump in order to politically capitalize on human misery for votes.

I saw Ryan Hall Y'all's stream yesterday and he went live earlier than planned due to the tornadoes that came ahead of the hurricane and several folks were killed/injured just from those, let alone the hurricane itself. Significant flooding in many areas and high winds and for those that say a cat 3 is a nothing burger, it's still pretty significant hurricane. Yes, it did officially hit Cat 5, then dropped to a 4, and 3 by landfall. At that point, still 100+MPH winds. I think with daylight we'll see the extent of the damage first hand and reassessments will begin. Sad a lot of trolls in the comments.

Florida is one perpetual disaster zone. People living there know the dangers and act surprised when their house gets destroyed. People have little sympathy for people who smoke and then get cancer when they know it will likely cause cancer. All of us pay higher premiums on our insurance because of them.
