Best fallout character.... Evil enough to stab a guy for mouthing off to him. Good enough to genuinely care about the guy’s family afterward. Proud enough to know he’s who the neighborhood needs as a leader. Humble enough to give it all up and admit he could be wrong in his way of thinking. Weak enough to give in to his own whims and urges. Strong enough to stand up for what’s right in the face of adversity, even if he stands alone. Hancock is brilliant.

Well, if you breakup with him, than get back with him again you'll get that dialogue: "I just gotta say, I'm sorry. I'm sorry for what I said. I'm sorry I ever doubted you. You've done exactly what I asked for, you gave me back the person... the person I love." and "You don't know how happy that makes me. I've done some boneheaded things, but breaking it off with you, that's up there. But look, I really hate to say this, but... just don't make me go through this again, alright?" And if he gets hit on by another NPC and you romance him, he'll say "Sorry, I ain't a tourin' Ghoul anymore. The one I got ain't the type you go wandering on." So I really think he do love the sole survivor, maybe more than he would admit.

Saddest part about getting to know Hancock is when you find out after the endgame that his brother was replaced by a Synth so Hancock truely lost his brother without ever knowing. All the more reason to end the institute
@jessicam28404 жыл бұрын
That was a really problematic detail because you can find out from a terminal in the Institute as soon as you get there, but you never tell Hancock something he has a right to know. They probably replaced McDonough *because* he was mayor, it's unlikely that the man who committed a pogrom against the ghouls was a synth at that point.
@kittycat59724 жыл бұрын
Jessica M I disagree, McDonough was likely replaced before his electoral run because after he was elected and the whole town expelled all the ghouls, Hancock described how it seemed like he wasn’t even talking to his own brother. It’d make sense for an institute asset to be disgusted by ghouls more so than the average surface dweller, so he would have a campaign based in removing ghouls from his current base of operations.

I gotta agree with the majority here, Oxhorn. A romanced Hancock is loyal and deeply in love with the SS. But he feels he doesn't deserve the SS's love in return. He struggles with self esteem and covers it up with a joke as a defensive mechanism. Not to mention, he's basically the only companion - the other being Nick - who does not constantly complain when the SS scavenges, and he offers to carry loot when one is overburdened, rather than just make some pithy comment on how one will get hurt (although he does that too). He is always kind to the SS and really rather sweet when one looks beyond the joke to underlying sentiment. He is essentially of a different species like the synths that are romanceable, but unlike synths who masquerade and hide among the human population, there's no hiding what he is. He deals with more outright bigotry and prejudice than any other companion, and it's warped his own self worth. And yes, again there is a parallel to Nick in this, who also cannot hide what he is. But Nick is not romanceable, and therefore it has less impact on the SS's relationship with him. I know plenty of people who are so uncomfortable with their own emotions that they make everything into a quip or innuendo, as Hancock does. It doesn't make their emotions less valid. And I really need to stop watching your channel, I think this is the third video I've commented on today. This is what happens when your videos are so good I just can't stop. Keep up the great work!

I have to disagree your assessments on Hancock's romance. I think he is genuinely in love with the sole survivor. he tells jokes when being romantic because he feels vulnerable. the joke is a way for him to bare his soul without worrying he's going to get hurt by rejection. he doesn't know how to be loved. He honestly thinks he isn't good enough for someone as amazing as you. And, he is afraid of the future. what if he falls so madly in love with you he can't live without you. the sole survivor is a human. the sole survivor will age, grow old, and eventually die. and then? then Hancock is alone and he he er find someone he will love as much as he loved you. can't blame the guy for being a little cautious.

He is absoLUTELY chaotic good. He never hits anyone who didn't give him a reason to, and that reason is based on a loose but consistent set of values. He's essentially operating on a modified version of Crowley's code-- do what thou wilt, but do no harm and take no shit.

I tend to see him more chaotic neutral. Just because it's not "Big evil", stealing, feeding drug addictions, and his various other hobbies are all still evil. And he's pretty chill about many of the outright monstrous things the Survivor does if you play a bad guy. He has enough good in him to avoid being a total monster...but he's pretty comfortable in the company of any monster who doesn't transgress his own particular code. So Chaotic Neutral.

"He would really contemplate a long-term permanent relationship with you if you were a ghoul" I don't think that is a sign of lack of commitment or him not taking it seriously. But think about it like this, you are a human being that will age normally and die, leaving Hancock the ghoul with the long life of a ghoul a widower for a very long time. It's not uncommon in fiction where one character is expected to live much longer than any normal human life span for them to struggle with this. If SS where a ghoul they would share his long life-span, hence it could be more long-term.

Hancock's humor here bends toward the latter. We like people who make us laugh, particularly if there's a kernel of self-deprecating tone to it. He jokes by acknowledging that he's not perfect by any stretch of the imagination, not classically attractive, not even sure how he got so lucky to hook up with Sole Survivor. I honestly think that Hancock is the best male romanceable character in the game. Not only is he an interesting guy to befriend but he has the same ideology as Preston in a way: help settlers and beggars and kill raiders, super mutants or whoever the latest threat to your settlements are. He also has a sense of humour that I like, and he utterly adores it when you channel your inner Silver Shroud. I got the distinct impression that he was trying to keep from bursting out laughing the whole time. There's also the fact that whenever you activate Lover's Embrace with him he'll either compliment you or he'll make a positive reference to the time you two just shared. (Besides "You see the brand on the Brahmin that stamped my head last night?" but even that can be taken as referencing the night.) But what I love the most about him is that he's completely accepting of people. Ghouls, Synths, Super Mutants; if you're not shooting at him or his people, he's happy to offer sharing a beer or needle or whatever with you. He doesn't even judge you for finding Pickman's Gallery "beautiful" although his face tells you everything you need to know XD

Hancock is envious of Deacon and the Railroad's status as underdogs against the Institute.
@-Zikade-5 жыл бұрын
28:09 Yeeeah, I read that line completely different. It's more like "I want to be with you till the end but I'm aware your lifespan is much shorter than mine." Basically he's saying that he'd like to stay with you for hundreds, thousands, however long ghouls live, of years but knows that it's not really possible since the SS will die long before he does. I saw that quip of his as a lighthearted way to acknowledge this reality they'll face. The fact that he points it out shows that he's been thinking about their future, of them staying together as long as possible. If he wasn't committed he wouldn't even bother to think about the SS's mortality. I must agree with many other people who thought your assessment of his romance was way off. To me he pretty much felt like the *most committed one*. He's very deeply in love with the SS but has some self-doubt about it in a "Do I deserve someone like him/her?"/ "I can't believe how lucky I am!" / "I now know karma is bs since nobody like me should be this blessed!" -way.

I think that by playfully suggesting to turn the sole survivor into a ghul he implies that he very well would be interested in a long lasting relationship. As he tends to present his thoughts with a pinch of dark humour this just may be a hint he does not like the idea of loosing the sole survivor at some point just because of their very different lifespans. Maybe I got this wrong because English is not my native language but for me this casual joke about turning you into a ghoul expressed a deep sadness and the fear of loosing a person he feels very attached to. I think joking about this while feeling sincere sympathy fits his personality.

Have to agree here, as well. It's always seemed pretty clear to me that when you romance Hancock, there's a massive amount of insecurity there that resolves itself through his self-deprecating humour. I think it might be a little more subtle romance than some others, which might explain why Ox missed the mark here. You're basically saving Cait. You're saving the MM for Preston. You're saving the Railroad for Deacon. Edit: You're also saving McReady's brother... But in Hancock's case, he really doesn't need anything from you aside from your continued company while you're out there kicking ass. He's already figuring his shit out on his own, like Piper. He's just amazed when you max out his "like" bar, because he realizes the SS and him mesh so damn well together. And yeah, Ox is right when he says Hancock's sexually attracted. But Hancock's neither blind nor stupid. He knows what he looks like. So the full romance probably feels "too good to be true" on his end. Which... Yeah, understandable.

I liked most of the video a lot, but the romance part was very off. He jokes a lot but that's just the way he is, and sometimes he seems to do it because he feels like he doesn't deserve you; however he is still extremely happy to be with you and isn't going to take it for granted. The "turn you into a ghoul" quote is something he says regardless of how you two are romantically (even if there is no romance at all) as he is half-jokingly implying that he would be happy to travel with you and fight bad-guys forever if you were able to stay alive that long. He also makes a lot of very romantic and loving comments at random if you are partnered to him, and it even changes the way he reacts to some settlers and such as well: At some point if he starts talking with one of the settlers, the settler may ask if he wants another "tour of the town" (implying that they had some sort of casual sexual encounter at some point). If you aren't in a romantic relationship he will state that he's busy but he will keep it in mind. If you ARE in a relationship, Hancock will decline and tell the settler that he has settled down and that the person he's with isn't worth ditching for a casual fling. While he might not be the most mature/safe-for-work dude, he genuinely loves you in terms of BOTH body and personality, and he will let you know that pretty frequently. Hancock has some issues he needs working out with his own personality and morals, but he isn't iffy on loving you when he does end up giving himself to you. He simply lets you know that he is sexually attracted to you as well as romantically smitten with you. The way I saw it when romancing him in my game is that you almost saw more of a "clearer" version of Hancock through the way he talks and reacts to you as a partner. He seems to be happier and more calm around you while also being free to talk about his drugs and sexual attractions to you without feeling guilty about it. You make him feel safe, loved and happy, and he appreciates and loves you a lot for it, and more than likely wants to stay with you "forever" regardless of if you date him or not, because you are his friend either way and he really appreciates your company.

In the end they'll always need to be someone to decide what's worthy of a punishment and actually enforce the rules. Those that enforce the rules will have to have the power to carry it out, otherwise the majority can just decide to target people they don't like or just because they're weaker. A leader less community only works if everyone or at least the over whelming majority agree to always defend the weakest in society when they get unfairly treated. It can work, but it's pretty easy to become corrupted. Especially when things get desperate, AKA fallout in general people tend to just look out for them selves most of the time. So good neighbor needs someone like Hancock to enforce the rules, violently if necessary. Otherwise it's just a matter of time before the strong start trying to take advantage of the weak and someone like Vick starts using violence to enforce there will on others.

Oxhorn is also not always correct, in a few videos he misses obvious hints or pieces of information or just looks into something too much as the expense of other pieces of information instead of taking it all in equally. Bethesda also leave a lot of the things vague on purpose so people like Oxhorn CAN sort of invent their own stories for what went on. It's what makes Bethesda gameworlds so amazing, not everything is always completely spelled out for you and shoved in your face.

I feel that you may have misinterpreted the "make you a ghoul" comment, I think his point there is that he is functionally immortal whereas one day, being a squishy human, you will inevitably die. This therefore gives the relationship a definite lifespan (yours). If you were to become a ghoul the relationship could last indefinitely, or "long-term". From my interpretation it's less that he would prefer you as a ghoul and more that he would prefer you to not ever have to end the relationship by getting old and dying. Also, I'd love a profile on Valentine. :3 And thank you for the videos! Fantastic as always.

Yeah he didn’t really grasp the aspect of Hancock’s personality that makes him run away from bad feelings, which is why he turns everything into a joke and tries not to show you how much you actually mean to him. If he admits you matter, it’ll hurt more when he loses you. And right now, no matter what, it seems like one day he’s going to lose you. So he’s going to cram that bad feeling in a box and hope it doesn’t make him blow up the relationship one day.

He is sincerely in love with the sole survivor. Do not doubt his love for you. The reason he cant see it as long term unless you were a ghoul is because you wont live forever like he will.. maybe im just bias because i might love Hancock for real just a little bit but all of his behaviour kind of makes sense if you consider hes really new to this whole ghoul thing and has to cope with the thought of immortality. I agree with the other comments, his jokes are definitely a defense mechanism. A way to taper down the seriousness and get back to 'chilled' as quick as possible. I wouldn't be surprised if, and it does seem like it to me, the SS was Hancock's first serious relationship. It won't be an easy one either, being a ghoul and a human, that alone is going to get them shit. Not only that, Hancock will kind of stay the same fifty years down the line while SS will change - a lot. Though... Hancock is a noble guy. I can totally see him staying with SS in their old age... ... Tho my character would turn ghoul, be forever General and stuff too :D Edit: Oh yeah, the mysterious serum. Just lock up daddy ever harder I guess.

I'm sorry, but Oxhorn's assessment that Hancock's love for the SS isn't as deep as the others, is completely wrong. He jokes more, but you have to read between the lines. Which, i can't blame Ox for being unable to do. One very simple line of his says alot, though. It's, "If you hadn't come along, i'd probably be in a gutter somewhere getting gnawed on by radroaches". Combine that with his flighty history of always running when things get bad, and he's basically telling you the same thing Preston tells you. That he would have left Goodneighbor, and killed himself. He thinks the world of the SS. And despite his cool, jokey exterior, he actually has a poor self image. If anything, i'd say he cares more for the SS than any other companion.

Hell, he even outright says he's in love with you, I'm pretty certain the other romanced companions don't even do that, Hancock is by far the most loyal of the companions in the game, sure, by all means if there was a "friends with benefits" option then he'd be all for it, but that's not what he has with the SS

Yeah, he's joking (look at his life; it's one sick joke), but just because he doesn't use words like love and soul mate doesn't mean he's not commited romantically. When he says 'if we find a way to make you a ghoul, we can go on like this forever', he basically mean that he would stay with the sole survivor forever if he/she was immortal too. This video is so great, so insightful...except for one thing. Hancock actually says that "turn you ghoul" line even when you're not romancing him but are still at his highest affinity, and it always seemed to me that it was an acknowledgment of the fact that he's just gonna live a lot longer than you are. Secondly, there are times when NPCs will come up to him while you're in Goodneighbor and say something suggestive, and he'll say something along the lines of, "the one I'm with isn't the type you run around on", insinuating that he does take his relationship with you seriously...or, at the very least, is too afraid of what you'd do to him if he did cheat on you. Otherwise, I agree with a lot of your observations. Hancock is definitely one of the most complex characters in all the Commonwealth, and I could probably watch hours of content like this. He's one fascinating dude.

Amazing video as always! Hancock is my favourite F4 character and getting a whole video for him is amazing :) I do somewhat disagree about the romance part - if you listen to his dialogue when you ask him about your relationship, his voice goes very soft in a way that seems very loving and genuine (and the same goes for his 'pillow talk'). I think he does really love the Sole Survivor, but doesn't think he's good enough for them, perhaps because he's a ghoul or because of his past, or both. I believe one of his lines when he wakes up next to you is 'I must still be dreaming' - he can't believe that someone like him could possibly be loved by someone like SoSu. He idolises them, because the SoSu stands up for the things he believes in. But he knows the dangers of the Commonwealth and the thought of losing the SoSu scares him. And maybe that's why he plays stuff off as a joke, like it's a casual 'friends with benefits' type thing. Not because he doesn't love them wholeheartedly, but because he doesn't want to contemplate losing them - seeing them killed, outliving them (hence the comment about turning the SoSu into a ghoul), or even something similar to his brother, where the SoSu would eventually become someone that Hancock didn't recognise. But that's just my take on it, and I'm probably really biased simply because I love Hancock so much haha

The script notes for his relationship dialogue with you say, “You're speaking to someone you're desperately in love with.” Also. If you complement Magnolia's singing, it says Hancock liked that, which show's he doesn't dislike her I think. But if you flirt with her it says he hated that, and again if you sleep with her. I don't have an explanation for why he'd hate that other than him being jealous.

That comment about making the relationship "long term" came across quite differently to me. Long term to a ghoul could easily be centuries. He has a bit of humor armor up because he knows that, even if you are the love of his life, he will outlive you. Possibly by a long, long time. Thus, right now, you two can only have a "short term" relationship. Perhaps only 50 years, or so.

Love the video, Oxhorn. Yet another great piece of work, but I'm gonna have to disagree with you on the romance part. In the beginning, I feel that Hancock saw the sole survivor as a friend, but was also sexually attracted to them. Over time, I believe he developed true, sincere feelings for them. Hancock's jokes and banter with the SS when it comes to their relationship seems to be a defense mechanism. He's never been in a serious relationship before, it's always just been flings and hookups. So when he says something romantic and follows it up with a joke, I see that as him adjusting to being in a proper relationship with someone he loves (he canonically saws that he loves the SS). Also, I think the "we figure out how to turn you ghoul..." comment wasn't about not being with the SS unless they were a ghoul. I see that as Hancock saying the SS should consider becoming a ghoul so they can spend the rest of their lives together, for the next 100's of years. For me, I can never romance anyone other than Hancock. His romance path is so real and eternal. He's not as lovey-dovey and cringy as the other companions but also shows how much he loves the SS in his own way. Nevertheless, thank you for making this incredible video on my favorite companion. x

I just loved watching Hancock shank that prick for trying to extort the Sole Survivor. I wish that had been an option the first time you tried walking into Riften and that tool of a guard tried extortion.

@@AnoukhHellstream It would be interesting if you could actually defuse the situation amicably with siginicant speech skills and get a unique dialogue option from Hancock to the effect of: Hancock: Huh, got a tongue as sharp as a blade doncha? I'm pretty sure that what he meant by turning into a ghoul and it being long-term was a reference to the fact that ghouls don't age, so the relationship will be even more long-term

28:08 pretty sure hes referring to the fact that he won't age as a ghoul while the sole surviver will age and die. So for him it's only a temporary relationship as he knows he's going to be a live way after the survivor dies. So if she was a ghoul then it could be permanent. It's not that he's just prefers ghouls

Hancock is one of my favorite Fallout characters. He's the best kind of leader. Everyone should be free to live the way they want, but don't infringe on the rights of others. No matter if you're a ghoul, a synth, a human, or a super mutant you should be free to pursue your conception of the good life without petty judgement. But, if you're someone like Finn who tries to extort the innocent, he'll put you down. That's the burden of leadership, getting rid of the folks who try and take advantage of the weak and innocent. What really makes him a good guy is his self-awareness. He doesn't like having to put down opposition. He just does it because he doesn't want some tyrant to take over and make life miserable for folks. And he goes so far as to walk the wasteland with you to make sure he doesn't become a tyrant. He's not a violent sociopath who kills and feels nothing. He internalizes the consequences of his actions and feels guilt over killing even the shittiest of people. But he has the guts to do what's right. As for theft, I think he has a nuanced attitude towards it. The way he sees it, he's rich and can afford to get robbed. So he's cool with someone raiding his storehouse if they're badass enough to pull it off. But Finn extorting some random drifter for all their stuff is unacceptable. It's gutless to rob a random, defenseless person, but it takes guts to steal from the mayor of Goodneighbor. Plus he's funny, cool, and charming. If he could use power armor he'd be my ideal follower. I'm not really attracted to ghouls, but I think Hancock might just be cool enough for me to overlook his physicality and have a relationship.

Great video Oxhorn! Though I do have a few nitpicks? I guess? (If you wanna call them that) First thing I wanted to say was that the game leaves whether or not McDonough was a synth before becoming mayor as a mystery. When Hancock mentions the strange smile his brother had, it was on the night when he had Diamond city turn on the ghouls. The game never actually addresses when McDonough was replaced. So for all Hancock or any of us knows his brother could have been a huge douche. Also I think Hancock is more serious about the soul survivor than you think. I took the 'doing this long term' comment as him basically saying stay together for many years maybe even indefinitely as the soul survivor wouldn't die from old age. And I don't see Hancock cracking jokes as him not being serious or truly caring about the soul survivor, I think that's just his personality. It's how he deals with his emotions. Angry or annoyed? Crack a joke, laugh it off. Fear or guilt? Laugh it off. In love and feeling vulnerable? (You get the idea) It's like a coping mechanism that doesn't involve chems. (Something that's useful when the world's gone to hell I would think) When I was traveling with Hancock, he even rejected the advances from other NPCs and mentions that he's in a relationship that he's taking seriously. (Not in those words I can't find a clip for the exact quote unfortunately) Of course I could just be biased. Hancock is my favorite XD Anyway that's all. Sorry for talking your ear off (As it were) I'd love seeing a profile about Nick sometime in the future. Keep up the great work!

Pretty good assessment, but I disagree with your ultimate conclusion; Hancock is a good person who has done some bad things, so he does not initially understand how the Sole Survivor can love him. His self deprecating humor is a defense mechanism because he has come to idolize and love SS, but you are a human and could probably have your pick of the Commonwealth. If you pick him, his dialogue becomes so genuinely loving and grateful and he shows the SS that he knows he is a better person for being with her (or him). Even his bedroom talk is caring and not just referring to sex; he says things like, "I must still be dreaming," and "morning sunshine," which show he cares about SS as a person, not just a fuck buddy.

One of the big paradoxs with Hancock’s “looking out for the little guy” philosophy is he’ll happily go out and kill a raider picking on the little guy even though that raider may be a little guy himself who if picked on by others. Protecting the little guy is good until the little guys start attacking each other.

We need a new word. Classical Anarchy is simply a society without government - not without respect for private property and contracts. Without those you either have tyranny or chaos. Common usage of Anarchy is - lawlessness, riots, and chaos. It's sad, but like many words who's usage has changed, I don't think it's redeemable. The problem that Hancock runs into is simple human nature. Those lacking principle will attempt to take advantage of the weak. The long standing solution to that is Government. Government consolidates power and power attracts people who like power, governments overreach and you get tyranny. I think you're correct that he's confused a lack of respect for private property with freedom, and I agree - that's entirely wrong. I do think he's slowly working toward what might be considered minarchy but he's not quite there yet. Some people, a significant portion of any population are happy to respect private property and contracts without the need for government - sadly there is also a significant portion who will seek to take advantage. In fallout I'd say it's about 50/50 (which is probably pretty close to real life - maybe I'm being optimistic.) I'm I the only one who would prefer half as many companion choices with each having twice as many lines of dialogue? - or even better, the same number of companion choices with ten times as many lines of dialogue. Would you pay extra for a companion DLC that added hours of extra dialogue? - Not just one liners, but some actual conversations about the state of the world beyond the companion quests. I think I would.
@kermitkerman87946 жыл бұрын
Vincent Keith i personally say it more like 3 groupes 50 20 30 50 respect private property.... 30 dont respect private property and steal murder.... And the 20 follow rules if they KNOW they get caught but if they KNOW they can get away with it....

28:12 i think he means by turning you (the player) into a ghoul then you could be together for 1000's of years, because, as you should know, ghouls age much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much slower than humans, so when you hit age 60-80, and you die, hancock will still be around for a really long time, so having a long term relationship isnt 30 years, it like 1000 years, 30 for him is short term as fuck
@OptiPopulus2 жыл бұрын
I think the reason Hancock jokes about turning you ghoul to make you two permanent is ghouls don't die of old age, non-ghouls do. He might want to live the rest of his life with the sole survivor, which might mean outliving the usual lifespan of a human.
