Monroe, NY - In a Nov. 12 article by the Village Voice, the fast growth of the town of Kiryas Joel is chronicled and the problems that come with a growing village.
Begun in 1970s with just 500 residents, the population is now more than 23,000. And what started as a peaceful and small town to be cut out for Hasidic Jewish residents grew into an areas that has seen its fair share of job growth, industry growth and problems with development, money, voting and a period of time called the War Time.
Loyalists banished dissidents from the town, and in turn, the dissidents built their own schools and cemeteries just outside of Kiryas Joel lines. Blurred social and political lines are uncovered as The Village Voice details the tensions that have risen in a village right along with the buildings and population.

It's important to note that not everyone who falls under the umbrella of Hasidic Judaism lives this way. Hasidic is a very broad term that has different sub movements that each operate differently. Many followers of the Chabad Hasidic movement are very well integrated into society and contribute a lot to the world around them by working jobs and giving back to their local communities (both religious and secular).

I respect people's faith, but you have to work. You can't spend all your life in a Yeshiva, closed off from reality and have 10 kids!! You can still practice your faith and live in the real world while contributing to the economy of the country you live in, as opposed to relying on welfare, when needier people can benefit! A large number of Hassidic men, who are able to work, choose not to and deny their kids a real education. I also realise that not all Hassidim are the same and I don't mean to generalize, but those that do behave this way need to see the negative image they bring to the rest of the broader Orthodox community.

While I am not a supporter of this particular Hasidic group, it is evident that the negative comments posted here are not based on any ibjective facts but mere supposition, finger pointing and hatred. I am guessing that none of the negative posters ever visited Kiryas Yoel and arr merely talking out of their rear ends. Members of this group do have jobs, businesses like anyone else. Those who study full time are often supported by wealthy philanthropists in thr community. If some are on welfare, they are no different from others on welfare, be thry Hindu, Christian, Muslim.

There's to many on welfare there there's too many that's the purpose of families having lots of children we call them wic people of America those who are lazy that's why New York has some of the highest tax rates in America because of it and the violent crimes that growing everywhere because of it and using other people's money to live off of that's really sad when they're perfectly able and strong to work and using up America's money to live off of only here are you able to do that, that's why you stay here now Muslims just above you are doing the same thing working on that too Minnesota's not that far away both types are doing the same thing what needs to happen now the state to built in the area subdivisions wic house through the government control with the state if I was there for lower income people to live in that's exactly what I would be pushing regardless who likes it or not easier way to keep track of what they're driving how much money is walking through the place no males allowed to be live with the mother and children if they do then they need to move out if the husband is found to take care of his family like he is supposed to do not off the taxpayers money doesn't work that way living with those who are struggling when you're on WIC Seems like New York laws need to be changed ASAP like some of the other states have. If I was the people living there that's what I would do to fix the Moochers to stop healthy people sucking off TAXPAYERS working on healthy people that are Moochers you should be taking pictures of who's coming in and out which ones are getting WIC not difficult to set up hidden cameras It's not that difficult to look up names and figure out who's on welfare aka wic that's public knowledge by the looks of it by the population there and what I read the % there is almost 67% that's to many on wic. Semper Fi.

Hindus are more harder workers then both parties want to be Jewish people and want to be Muslims in America look that up yourself on the average Asians are some of the most wealthy you never hear them complaining or whining or on wic they are some of the most hardest working Americans that exist. I know and please don't lecture talk to me cuz my bloodline is America I am Catawba Indian & Italian I say well my ancestors were here way before you ever even existed or your great-great-great-great-x 10 grandfather's ever walked the earth my bloodline goes back to the beginning of time here. How U see it I did not, I did not put years of my live in our great military to see vultures live off of American taxpayers and by the looks of the aerial shot they're not one WIC subdivisions they're living quietly wealthy there I see. So now somebody's must educate them with the state to be on this how to stop uses that are abusing of taxpayers money where it should be helping those who are truly in need help like those who are handicapped and others anybody that can work on wic is sickening it comes down to laziness not caring about the others but only themselves that's the problem they need to join the military good thought isn't it be Protectors of the land they live free off of that irritates me to my soul. Well Russia will pull us in a third world war they will have to fight for their future of life soon. Hoorah.

In the Evangelical community, which you obviously aren’t familiar with (and which I personally don’t care for), it would be radically uncommon for grown men and women to be full-time students for their entire lives. It is also seen as shameful to not work to support yourself for a living and to be on welfare for any extended period of time. Really the only American community that parallels this one would be FLDS, they were busted for food stamp fraud as well.

I don't mind having a righteous community in my midst, and believe as the town progresses, so will the people. So, at the moment, a lot are on welfare, but eventually more jobs will be created, and more families will rely less on the government than before. However as a whole, most families living within the area are doing a good thing, and that is: Promoting a righteous lifestyle according to the word of God.

How are more families going to rely on less government over time? The high poverty rate is not a byproduct of a lack of educational availability or a lack of able-bodied people. It's due to people having more children than they can provide for. What's righteous about that?

What's more, there are people who do need government assistance and they are not willing to take it. I've been living here, in the United States for more than 40 years, and I've been living most of the time in KJ. That being said, I know KJ quite well; you can tell anyone who doesn't know KJ whatever you want, but you cannot come with any lie to me. For instance, business people cannot take any government assistance, as that would prevent them from getting loans from the bank. Some of them are not so well off, but it is quite obvious for them that they should not even consider going for government assistance. Most important, people with very big families who just live on some low income are perfectly entitled to get it.
