Its a long debate and there are many different sides and parts of the conversation when covering hair. I dont know everything but there are experts, just look up on google and it will explain everything. Although ill tell you what i do. I cover my hair mostly with scarves and hats but on nice occasions i wear a wig. The reason why wearing a wig is ok is because its not your hair. Its not unmodest to show your hair, but it has a different spiritual status once you are married. This is all i can tell you but there are many sites on the internet that explain it better. My guess try and look for an orthodox jewish one because it explains covering hair (for jewish people) in the most respectable and authentic manner. Aish is great for any jewish questions.

@@ariellafrankel1502 Aish and all the baal teshuva sites are great if you want the made up stuff which gloss over reality - [i.e. "Lo Asani Isha" is really respecting women.... yep] Hair covering is mandatory for women in Orthodoxy because a women's hair is called "Ervah". Ervah is basically nakedness or something a man is not aloud to look at. Basically it's just one more example from many religions of men making women cover up. Only difference is most religions have stopped this, Islam hasn't but at least is more honest about it (maybe) and Orthodoxy has found ways to put a spin on everything - what's more so many people are buying it. If you have any questions feel free. Best of luck to you!

I believe this vestige of patriarchy will eventually evolve into something which serves women and not only men. Wearing a wig is uncomfortable and unhygienic. Sephardic Orthodox Jews believe that for a married woman to wear a wig is not within Biblical Jewish tradition. How is wearing a wig which is often much more sexually appealing than the woman's own hair, an act of modesty? It is more an act of hypocrisy, in my opinion and not worthy of being part of the Jewish system of ethics.

Don't understand the wigs. Thought it was that shouldn't be drawn to look at hair, wearing wigs just seems to be like a loophole of having fashionable hair but it's ok because its not really hair.

Mrs. T, sadly this is an issue with the modern Orthodox. They think they can outwit God by following the letter of the law while ignoring the intent of the law. Another example would be makon. Imitation bacon made from beef, or the use of potato flour on Passover to make cakes when wheat flour is forbidden. It is a mockery of Judaism. Thankfully the ultra Orthodox don't do this, they understand that it is following the intent of law that is pleasing to God, because that requires true sacrifice.
@um22w226 жыл бұрын
Daryl A I wouldn’t compare makon to wigs. Hair is hair (especially in case of a more luscious wig) while in the case of meat one is pig and the other is cow.

So keep in mind this woman is Lubavitch/Chabad. Different sects in Hasidism dress differently. Lubavitch is more at the "liberal" end of Hasidism. Some groups ex-Satmar tend to wear more black and less color. As the same with many groups cannot generalize customs. In Modern Orthodoxy some women do not cover their hair at all except when in synagogue. Also Hasidim don't watch tv and many would never allow themselves to be filmed as considered immodest. Many are not allowed access to the internet. Again it depends upon your group.

No the whole point is to strengthen your connection to God. A lot of regulations in Judaism don’t make sense on their own but when seen together with an open mind it’s all about a constant reminder of God and being the best person you can be. When you get married your hair becomes private between you and your husband. You don’t have to look ugly to everyone else but rather keep your real self for him. Just like you put on a friendly personality when talking to strangers but at home can relax and be yourself.
@mariekatherine5238 Жыл бұрын
I’m Traditional Catholic and also dress modestly, standards very similar to yours. We don’t do the scheitel thing, but women and girls wear a veil or head covering in Church and for prayer and religious occasions. We don’t count a wig as a religious head covering, so if we wear one by choice, we put a veil or covering over it. Mainstream Catholics sometimes tell people that you have to dress in a sack or in drab colors. Just not true! Any time I need a really nice outfit to wear for a special event, I usually shop in Jewish neighborhoods in Brooklyn. And if I ever need a wig, G-d forbid, for chemo or some unfortunate hair loss, I know where to get a good one! Women who always complain that strange men don’t respect them should consult their mirrors. It could be that their clothing (or lack thereof) is giving men the wrong message. I lived in New York for fifty years, moving only recently, and I can honestly say that I’ve only three times had a strange man be indecent towards me. One of those I don’t really count as the guy was clearly mentally ill. (Walking entirely in his birthday suit in the middle of 34 St. and 8th Ave., yelling stuff about Obama?) Men should learn to control themselves, absolutely! And so should women. You don’t dangle bacon in front of a dog and get upset when it bites. Some men should also have a look in the mirror. What if your sister brought home a guy who looks like you?

To be technical, the Torah does not give the reason why women should cover their hair after marriage. It is considered ervah, but what many may not understand is that it is the literal hair that is ervah, NOT the non literal hair. A woman wearing a wig no matter how much it may LOOK like it is her hair, the fact that it isn't means that it is NOT ervah.

@@this-is-my-voice, you state "Everything to do with sexism. Just another way of making women cover themselves up." My response, if you had some evidence for this assertion you might have something that would be considered acceptable. But what is the the reality of this claim is that yours is merely an opinion not based on fact. You state "And regarding your claim, while that may be the Chabad view or even the general Ashkenaz view, Sephardim see it very differently and ban wigs (Those who follow Ovadia Yosef)." My response, Sephardim (actually follow the Bais Yosaif and Rambam) do not consider wigs to be ervah. I can prove it. Ask any (knowledgeable) Sephardi if he will make a bracha in front of a woman wearing a wig. If the answer is yes, then this is proof it is not considered ervah. For if it was, then it is forbidden to make a bracha in front of such a woman. In truth Sephardim who do not wear wigs do so as a chumra rather than because they consider it to be ervah. You state "btw haven't heard from you in ages..." My response, I have been much busier as of late and so I have not been as active here as I had been. Btw... @@meme-bd5hk because there is so much sexism in religion including Judaism. How about the woman that gets raped in the city and her punishment is death (because she did not scream)? “Claiming”, as if there’s a doubt? Inaccurate and bad form, Huffington post. “claiming” is for use when alleging that which is not confirmed. You Huff guys do learn English in college, don’t you? You Huffpost ignoramuses are based in New York, are you not? Most media outlets are in New York so I’m pretty sure you guys are too. And I’m pretty sure you guys have been into Zara in your lives. And when you do go in there, you do know as well as I do that Zara’s 17th and 34th, AT ANY GIVEN TIME - is full of more than 50% Hasidic women, every day of the week except Saturday. As is J Crew, Nordstrom rack, Bloomingdale’s, and Lord And Taylor. So then one needs to ask why are you making it seem like there’s even a question; anyone who lives in New York knows that’s false. And when one tries to come up with a reason as to why you would knowingly try to misrepresent something like this the only thing I can come up with is anti-religious bias. What you’re trying to do is, you are trying to marginalize Hassidic women, trying to make them seem more “other” than they in fact are. Hassidic Women are just like anybody else they love fashion they love looking pretty, & they have feelings just like anyone else. The only difference between them and any other Zara shopper is that they are religious. Not a big deal. No need to write disingenuous stories about them. I smell a teeny little whiff of anti-Semitism in the Huff-air.
