Thanks for this video. I am enjoying the material presented. One point of contentment. As someone in the IT industry for over 30 years, I find that complex rating matrix like yours leads to a lot of fighting in conference. In your 4x4 matrix there are sixteen possible solutions. I simplify that to just four possible solutions. 0 - Low Impact/Low Probability, 1 - Low Impact/High Prob., 2 - High Impact/High Prob, and 3 - High Impact/High Probability. In the Risk Register I simply add another column labeled Rating. Using a Data Validation List, I can accept one of the four values . I find that this simplification of the matrix avoids undue discussion around the middle of the board. That stated, the arguments always seem to start with those items in the middle of the board.

Great video! The only challenge I have when creating a risk register is pulling the info out of the project committee and/or trying to prioritize and mitigate the risks. I always lead with what I think may happen, like resource availability. That is absolutely something that happens with IT. Any suggestions or video's that may help to get people to engage when it comes to talking about risks and mitigations? I'm a woman PM-ing with a bunch of men. :)

Sorry can u ask some questions..a project costs is the same of project budget or its different?
@AdrianaGirdler Жыл бұрын
Do you mean project estimate vs project budget? The budget is the maximum cost a company is willing to spend and and estimate is the approximate cost a company might spend to finish a project. Hope this helps. Cheers!

How would you choose what risks are too small or extravagant and should not go on this analysis. Like for example alien invasion or the next pandemic... People keep looking me weird on my meetings.

Thanks for your question. If you go back to the video and look at how to create the risk register and that will show you how to rank your risks based on their size and impact. Thanks so much for watching, cheers!

@@AdrianaGirdler so basically everything should go there even if it sounds improbable.

It is your choice what you want to put in your risk register. My advice is to use common sense when identifying your risks otherwise if you put in everything it will be overwhelming and way too much work.

I'm not convinced. What i see is the risk classification and prognosing made by the managers, and they don't create value - it's a tayloristic approach that we know for the last 110 years - managers think, and the (less intelligent) workers do. I come from the construction, and the best way to do it is to: 1. use the antifragile approach (Nassim Nicholas Taleb), which is to firstly decompose the big tasks into smaller ones (work structuring based on the systems thinking - Peter Senge), and 2. eliminate the constraints one by one in the so-called Last Planner System (Glenn Ballard/Greg Howell), especially in the constraints log, where we address all appearing constraints as we go. And the people involved are the line workers that are jointly creating the workload with reliable promises of execution. The managers are only coaching and supporting them. The prognoses are not working, because generally no speculation works, and especially by people who don't create value for the customer, and have no idea about the actual work, be it the project or the construction execution. We have such misery in the construction industry for decades...

Thanks for your comment. The choice is always yours if you want to do a risk register or not. Every project and project manager will determine what needs to be reviewed when it comes to risk. Sound like you have an approach that works for you. Cheers!
