I was a protestant for 40 years and converted to Catholicism after reading Church history, studying the history of protestant reformation, and observing the many problems with the protestant arguments. One clear observation, if Christ did not leave us with a Church, Christianity would look very different today. Protestants take the Nicene Creed for granted.The Church formulated the creed in response to heresies plaguing Christianity, mainly Arianism and Gnosticism. Each part of the creed is in response to a heresy the Church spent centuries combating. Had there not been a Church to formulate theology, the faith would nothing like it does today. You cannot read Apostolic Fathers without seeing they all strongly believed in a single Church. Christ instructed us not to divide and 500 years after the protestant reformation there are thousands of protestant denominations each claiming to have a better understanding of the scriptures than all the others. And every day more are created. As a protestant, I knew very little about the Catholic Church. What I knew I learned from other protestants who learned what they knew from other protestants. It wasn't until I began reading about the early Church did I have any concept of the full history of our faith. I knew of Aquinas, Augustine, and a few others but had only a cursory understanding. I had not read what early Christians who worshiped with the apostles had written. What did they have to say and how did they worship? All this is lost to protestants who stop at the death of Paul and don't pick up again for another 1,500 years. The depth and richness of Catholicism is mind boggling. If you are a protestant and curious to know what you've been missing, I recommend reading "The Fathers of the Church" by Mike Aquilina. It's a broad overview but it's a start.

It's nearly impossible to study Church history (openly and honestly) and NOT become Catholic. As a 37 year long Protestant my pride of realizing I was wrong was the last obstacle to me becoming Catholic.

Silverbird901 You can believe in a single Church and not call yourself a Catholic. In fact it’s easier, because you include all sons and daughters of Christ, those who are saved, as fellow members of your church body in Christ. We are unified in Christ, not Catholicism. We should be small “c” catholics, if that makes sense. (in the sense that catholic means universal). When you decide to name something as “the” church beyond Christ, you are actually the one drawing divisions. I agree that people should learn more Church history. Most protestants would find themselves agreeing with most Church fathers.

@@lukericker8325 "When you decide to name something as “the” church beyond Christ," Your issue then is with Christ because He is the one who said the Church founded on Peter would never be prevailed against (Matthew 16:18). He also said we have recourse to this church (singular) when we have disagreements and He said that this church (singular) will bind and loose infallibly (matthew 18:17). If heaven cannot affirm a false teaching, then Jesus is saying that this earthly authority He established will bind and loose (permit and forbid in regards to the faith) infallibly. So, since Jesus said we have recourse to this earthly authority it must exist in every century and it will be the only church that has made binding decisions that all Christians believe. There is only one church that meets that standard. In the absence of that earthly authority Christians can never have anything more than scriptural relativism. One can feel morally justified in how they interpret scripture but in the absence of the authority of the Church we can never know with certainty what scripture means with epistemic certainty. Which explains the ever growing fractured state of Protestantism. I too was a Protestant apologist and lay philosopher until I encountered the early church, which was thoroughly Catholic.

Leah James It was a number of things, but it was mainly history and logic. I was reading backwards in time into the reformers, to the schisms, to the early church fathers, then ultimately to the scriptures (both old and new testaments). Each thing kept pointing to the Catholic Church.

@@leahjames6870 In a nutshell, I realized it made no sense to believe that God allowed his religion to be corrupted (soon after its beginning), then allow it to be restored only 15 or 16 centuries later, just to be corrupted again a little later (since protestants disagree with one another on some key issues) and even so believe that I particularly was in the right denomination, stp. Moreover, that meant I believed not in Christianity, but in the Bible: but a book can't talk by itself and must be interpreted. Thus there are many different interpretations. This way I believed only in myself, in my interpretation. In short: it was stopping believing in myself and beginning to trust in Christ.

20:06 From a Catholic perspective, the importance of Rome can be seen in two aspects: 1) It is not important simply because that's where Saint Peter died. But because that's where he was Bishop. The leaders of the Church after the Ascension of Christ were the Bishops, and Peter was the first among them. So after his death, the new heads of the Church would be his successors in what he was: the Bishop of Rome. 2) Rome is also symbol. The Romans were the ones who crucified Christ, and first persecuted His followers. So the head of the Church being in Rome, the center of the Empire who tried to crush "a small movement from Judea" , is a remembrance to the power of God that can defeat your worst enemy, no matter how big, and turn him into your friend and supporter.

Maybe it's God's way to fulfill Isaiah 53 chapter 12, "Hence I shall give him a portion with the many, and he will share the booty with the mighty, for having exposed himself to death and for being counted as one of the rebellious, whereas he was bearing the sin of many and interceding for the rebellious." The mighty nation by the time Jesus lived, the same nation that made the crucifixion and salvation possible was the Roman empire. So they will be God's tool for saving humans through His Church. His work is truly remarkable. Praise God!

Love one another, even those who don't agree with you. It's not entirely their fault they are born JW, Muslim, etc... Unless of course they were born and raised as part of the Church, and then rejected it in their own free will, while understanding everything about what the Church is. It's not a black or white issue, there's more than meets the eye.

This I find strange as in my church we DO NOT believe that salvation is guranteed, rather we must 1. believe in God sincerely, 2. recieve the holy spirit. 3. Hey! Didn't know you had a youtube channel! He is definitely my favorite professor I've ever had, and one of the only reasons I was able to get through college successfully and graduate on time with the rest of my class. I've been on a greek catholic mass simetimes. I’d rather follow the church Christ established the Catholic Church which means universal rather then the church a former Catholic priest started. Luther also wanted to remove the book of James which he called the epistle of straw and the book of Revelations out to but managed to remove some books out of the Old Testament that didn’t suit his doctrines

Pat Aherne actually that is incorrect. The term “Roman Catholic” refers to the liturgical rite used at the mass. Most people that call themselves “Catholic” are of the Roman rite. There are different rites in the Catholic Church such as the Byzantine, Coptic, Armenian, etc. which are Catholic and under the authority of the Pope as well, they simply use a different liturgical rite.

Again I bring up the need to a a specificity to language. Throwing around the term Catholic to only being Roman Catholic doesn't help the discussion. But on the other hand saying Roman Catholic gives a definite starting point. Work to fully explain your point so that we dan advance the discussion. Peace

@@jg2072I may have misunderstood you, but I think you have this backwards. "Roman Catholic" is shorthand for "Roman Rite Catholic" and is excessively specific and doesn't actually refer to a church, but to a subset of that church. All Catholics belong to the church of the Pope, regardless of whether they are Maronite Catholic, Byzantine Catholic, Roman Catholic, etc. Something like 90% of Catholics are Roman Catholics, but if you are referring to the people who hold the beliefs that "Roman Catholics" hold (which all Catholics necessarily also hold) then you should not say "Roman Catholic" but "Catholic." The only difference between "Roman Catholics" and non-Roman Rite Catholics is the way they worship. That difference may mean one rite speaks Aramaic in their worship service, and another speaks Greek, but it's the same beliefs. So "Catholic" is actually the more appropriate term under 99% of scenarios.

I'm very intellectually driven. And intellectually the Catholic Church interests me quite a bit more than protestantism. And in all honesty, I knew more about theology than the average christian, I'd say. I was already a christian and I was anti the Catholic Church with conviction. The deciding factor for me to become Catholic, surprisingly, had nothing to do with intellect. I did not want, by any means, to become a Catholic! I was fasting and praying quite a lot at the time, then a series of "coincidences" started happening in my life. When there are two or three it's ok, but when in a short period of time there are around ten or fifteen coincidences... well, makes you think, right? So I started remembering things ever since I was a child. And in each place I had lived, each address, each country there was something that was profound and related to the Catholic faith that I had never noticed in my life. My entire life was laid out in front of my eyes and I could suddenly see a pattern, a path that I was suppose to follow. That gave me a lot of anxiety, because I had known my whole life the Catholics adored saints and the Virgin Mary and that that was wrong. Finally I decided to go to a Catholic Church. When I finally did, about two weeks later, I was very skeptical, and so was my wife who I had convinced to accompany me. She was not a big fan of the Catholic church, I'll tell you that much. There was no way I could have a transformative experience, I thought. I expected it to be boring and a mistake. What was I doing there? I did not know much about a Catholic Mass, I did not know exactly what the sacraments meant to a Catholic, but a few minutes after the Mass started my whole life changed. I felt for the first time in my life a direct connection to another realm... God, the angels, all of that (mind you, it was in the beginning of the service, not during the Eucharist when Catholics actually believe that that happens - but I didn't even know that at the time). It was the most unique feeling that I've ever had and I don't know if I'll ever experience it again. Out of nowhere it was like a storm going on inside my body, I had goose bumps ALL OVER. I had NEVER felt like that. I looked to my wife and I was tearing up and I could't even talk (for her it was a regular Mass, but she noticed something was different for me). At that moment I just knew I was home. And I don't say home because it's just a way of saying it. I truthfully felt like that, like I was my home, and that that's where I was supposed to be. My wife also converted and is also a devout Catholic. It doesn't matter if you want to believe a certain way or not, it doesn't matter if you understand something or not... some things are the way they are, the way God created them to be.

Do you really think that someone you do not know and who is sharing their personal experience on a youtube comment is required to mention whatever you think they should? Also, how can you be so sure about what I study or what I don't study? As to your other comment, how can you understand from 'I was once a protestant. Now I'm a Catholic." that I said there were only two options? How exactly could you know what I did or did not consider before? Born and raised in a lukewarm catholic family in the Philippines, I took the teachings lightly if not totally ignored them. But I came to my senses when now that I am able to visit different countries, going to a Catholic Church feels like home. And interestingly, no language barriers as I can participate in the worship in every mass. Damon If 'uniting' means accepting multiple heresies, count me out. I am a firm believer in the fundamental unity of the Church, but under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, not some overarching administrative superstructure. When Paul warned against the partisan spirit in 1st Corinthians 1:10-17, I don't suppose that he intended compromise at all costs. That would be in conflict with the tenor of the rest of his writings.

Bergoglio does not represent historic, Biblical Christianity but is a heterodox ecclesiastical politician. There are many Christians in their denomination who feel bound by traditional loyalties and needlessly so, but one cannot force them to leave if they choose to remain. What this Protestant does is what so many do not: He asks questions of those that can fairly answer from the Catholic point of view, rather than ask those who cannot. Christopher Wheeler thank God you've realized that others don't have to be wrong in order for you to be right! I see this with many Christians who are caustic and accusatory, and it's impossible to develop a good dialogue with them. Congratulations on receiving God's grace of charity!! :) I do have some advice: keep what is good and recognize what you actually agree with. You'd probably be surprised to see what you agree with when talking with a Christian who is from perhaps a different part of Christianity than you. I practice this often, and I see that many things that others believe is what I believe also! Test everything you come across to see whether it comes from God, or of the enemy. You can become quite sensitive as a result to good versus bad, and I think that is a good thing. ;)

Here's some food for thought, Matt. When you stand outside a Catholic cathedral, you may recognise that its architecture is cruciform, you can see that it has stained glass windows and a Cross at the top, but you can't appreciate what's inside, because you're on the outside looking at it. You can't appreciate what happens inside a church just by looking at it from the outside. For instance, those stained glass windows are very hard to identify from outside because the light is shining on them. You have to be on the inside to fully appreciate what they look like with the light shining THROUGH them, then you can recognise the images and understand the story they're telling. Spiritually, it's very similar. The deeper you go inside the Catholic faith, the more you begin to understand it. When you come to the point where you realise that you're missing out on so much, that will be your turning point. Until then, you're searching, and when you seek, you will find! God will draw you! ❤️🙏🏼🇦🇺

I converted to Catholicism because I was ultimately convinced by the historical claims and the logical necissity for a divine interpreter. It's interesting to hear your point of view on this! I'm curious, are you familiar with St. John Henry Newman?

What do you mean by "divine interpreter"? * Do you not believe Jesus' words in John 16:13-15? * Are we not called to follow Abraham example, taking God at His word? An act of faith and expectation which was accounted to him as righteousness _(James __2:23__)?_ _ _ _ _ John 16:13-15 - _"However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, _*_He will guide you_*_ into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears _*_He will speak;_*_ and _*_He will tell you_*_ things to come. He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and _*_declare it to you._*_ All things that the Father has are Mine. This is one of the issues I have with the doctrines of the RCC. That they encourage lack of understanding and faith in God's desire and ability to fulfill what He has promised. When in reality we can stand as saints in the righteousness of Jesus Christ _(2 Cor __5:21__),_ boldly able to come before the throne of our holy God and Father. @XYU When you say "church", do you mean a man-made religious organization or the definition the Bible gives of a spiritual entity that is made up of all born-again believers that make up the body of Jesus Christ? Yes, I agree that God can use men both good and evil to assemble HIS BOOK. BUT if the catholic church hadn't existed, would it have come about anyway? *of course* Why? Because God is able, even inspite of the stupidity of mankind.

@XYU When I speak to catholics they wear the achievement of the assembly of the Bible as a crown of eternal righteousness on behalf of the RCC. As if it equates a man-made religious organization unto righteousness there after. While forgetting that all religious organizations are made up of both righteous and evil men because we are in a fallen world where humanity has a propensity for evil. It is this very type of docrine that is used by all cults that places their "church" as the gatekeeper to Heaven. Making their "church" the way, the truth, and the life. This is a blasphemous teaching that robs glory from YHWH, and introduces idolatry that ultimately leads to damnation. This is likely why there are thousands of protestant denominations. Because no one religious organization is holier than other. Righteousness is defined individually before a Holy God. YHWH is a personal God first, before being a corporate God. It is only IN Him that each body part is a member of His Church. Why? Simply put, salvation is found in Jesus alone.

I think that there is so much misunderstanding of the depth of Catholic/Orthodox theology, and that very often people see Christianity through a strictly Protestant lens. More discussions with Anglicans/Episcopalians would be fascinating as well. Thank you for your good work. I've recommended your channel to many fellow Catholics. (I'm Ukrainian Greek Catholic/Byzantine rite, BTW - not all Catholics are Roman/Latin rite.)

Chris - I think it's going to be interesting to watch Matt for the next few years... He's clearly a Well Educated person on matters of the Faith, and he's "dangerously" close to making the same "Mistake" I made a few years ago - the same "mistake" Scott Hahn, Marcus Grodi, Dave Anders, and countless others have made. :-) And of course, that "Mistake" is in giving The Church a fair hearing. Speaking ONLY for myself - I'm like the friend that Dr. Homes discussed in the early part of the video. I accepted Christ, But then (years later) I DID Come to the Realization that Christ founded an actual, visible, earthly Church, and that it still exists. Faced with that realization, I found myself with no choice BUT to accept HIS Church (and its been a Wonderful choice!!!). However, I respect that others Can (and do) reach different conclusions.

nilocblue If you care to read some history, you may find that the bullying goes BOTH WAYS. 'FOR ALL HAVE SINNED AND FALL SHORT OF THE GLORY OF GOD.' (Romans 3:23) As I've observed, some Catholic hard-heads feel that bullying 'Protestants' is a mark of great virtue. I've met others who lack conviction. Frankly I'm not sure which is worse.
