A QSL Card is Worth More Than a Thousand Words. I go thrifting - You WONT Believe What Happens Next

I have always been fascinated with vintage things. This was my opportunity to explain why QSL cards are so fun and worth more than a thousand words to some!

Sending old QSL cards to the current call sign holder is one of the cooler things I’ve seen folks in the community do. Awesome! I’m taking a break studying for the Technician test I’ll be taking tomorrow. Wish me luck!

I work at NCSU and yes, the libraries keeps an archive of the QSL cards from the student ham radio club station on campus, W4ATC.

My nephew found a stack of qsl cards at Alters Metal yesterday, they fell out of a filing cabinet that someone threw away. They are all from the 1930's and 40's with a couple from Sweden and England. I QRZ'd a couple of the calls so far and a few of the operators were born in the 20's. One card postmarked June 1937 from 'Clark', was reissued to William in 1951, who was born in 1931, according to his bio on QRZ, It says he's had the call 67 years :) The majority of cards are from here in Nebraska (Omaha, Sioux City, Blair etc). I'm gonna look each one up and see if I can get them to the original family or at least current call sign holder. Cool stuff!

Those last ones had me bawling like a baby! QSL cards are what drew me to the hobby. My Mom became a ham later in life, and I always was kinda interested just because she loves it so much. But I didn't catch the big until I saw her and friend sorting a table full of QSL cards from a contest. Holding them in my hand, seeing each one, I knew then I HAD to get licensed. I test tomorrow, and I can't wait to start sending and collecting. What an awesome video! Did you get any response from the new owners that you sent to?

The TH-3Jr is the lower gain 10M 15M and 20M yagi of the TH-3 3 element Yagi. It's a little smaller.

@@HAMRADIODUDE You are correct about the history of the cards and why they're sent. I knew of a guy that collected old books from secondhand book stores. But ONLY if they had a hand written dedication to someone on the front blank page. You know, like 'to my wonderful daughter' or something similar. Hes said the thought and reasoning that went in to buying that particular book for someone was worth keeping. He had a blog with all of the dedication pages scanned in as images
