A quick & brief follow up to ‘the anxious generation’

The latest Jonathan Haidt book explores the reason behind the decline in mental health over the last few years. He argues that giving young people smartphones and iPads etc. has been a large contributory factor. Not only are kids exposed to information and images etc. that they absolutely should not be; but social media itself can be extremely toxic. He proposes several solutions, one of which is to limit access to smartphones until children are older. There’s a double challenge (at least) in that not only can unrestricted and unsupervised access to the internet be harmful, but also that early access to social media platforms can also be very harmful. And so the legislation needs to change, but so does the approach of adults, specifically in regard to limiting early access to ‘smart’ devices.
