Never really understood people refusing to sell equipment and then scrapping it for WAYY less money then if they’d just sold it

I think they worry that someone might make more money on/with something than they would and that would make them feel like they were taken advantage of. Apparently the scrappers don't make a profit in their minds.

Thanks for the story. It is always fun to hear stories from the past and how they got things done. It also gose to show that the weather is just a cycle and this isn't the first time we have had a wet fall/mild start to winter. I always enjoyed talking with my grate grandma about the past and its weather. Hope you have good new years.

These were popular in the Chico, Yuba City, Woodland, CA Rice growing areas in the Sacramento Valley of Northern California. Up until about 15 years ago you would see them parked somewhere or in the back of an old barn, but when the price of scrap iron and land exploded many went to scrap. There were a couple of manufacturers that would actually build complete specially built full tracked harvesters for rice: Sweco, Hardy and Hahn.

Interesting to see old innovative machines built to handle the rigors of rice-field harvests. Can only imagine the struggle to get crops out under those conditions. Shelled corn in a flood-plain bottom that had mostly drained off and frozen. Talk about riding a bucking bronco. At least most of the ears were above the water level. Happy New Year to all...hope conditions improve so you can wrap up harvest.

That's just sickening. Why people have to be that way is just. We had a guy and his brother farm near us back in the day and if something ever broke down they parked it the pasture and bought another. Just stupid, what a waist. I'm only 23 but man by the time I retire all these classics will be scrapped by then.

Thanks for the interesting story time, I'd bet that guy didn't like your Dad or somebody in your family for some reason. over all the years I've bought tractors I've had it happen a couple times where no price was going to buy it, then it went to scrap. But I've also been on the side where everybody else tried buying a machine and got told no way no how. I've walked in one day talked to the guy and ended up owning it for way less than others offered, and they got right mad about it when they found out. The last things I bought before coming to canada was a near new 1952 Fordson Major hood and a tractor. Several guys knew that hood was in the parts store loft as they'd seen it and he also had the tractor they couldn't buy either. The guy said one day did I want the hood and the tractor, I was like it's not been for sale at any price I know he'd been offered. He said give me the equivalent of $30 for the hood and $600 for the tractor, the only conditions were I had to go tell the one guy who'd tried buying the rare hood for $500 and the tractor for $1500 what I paid. Then I had to keep them, He didn't mind me bringing them to Canada as long as he knew they were safe and not being sold. so 24 years later the hoods on a tractor here and I finally found a rare new old stock crank for his tractor motor and I'm hoping to restore it this year, and send him the pictures before he dies of old age. Hope you, Shelley and the family have a Happy new year, take care.

Don't know if there would be any down here in Arkansas or not. To be fair, I never even knew about some of the 8700 rice machines that are down here either. Its a weird thing, Oliver never had a huge following down south, but if there's anywhere a rice combine would be, it's here. I know you said there was a White research farm in this area somewhere. I'm assuming it was down around Stuttgart/Carlisle most likely, though I have no proof to back that up. That's the only place I've ever seen much White equipment (that being said, they were all tractors, not combines or anything like that).

It took a couple of years and some crops left in the field. that and many hands in the farmers pocket The Man, (Deceased, but I got his Dog) opened the Door for us to a venture, that is getting more profitable every year We Supply TSC Stores with Small Squares at a contracted price...... We supply a 53ft trailer with 756 bales, and Corporate Office mails us a check...... We started 6 years ago, sold everything connected with Cotton& Peanuts, Bought All new Hay Equipment, a complete system to convert... (which we upgraded in June) 4x5 rounds into small Squares, We started with 2 stores presently have 6, with others preparing,,, Some of the more sales oriented stores need a load about every 10 to 14 days. Since June we have sold 38,000 bales. Even at a giveaway price, that is a Fist full of Dollars that is not taking in account from Jan to June.......... This is just how Weather can affect decisions for better or worse!
@Oliver66FarmBoy
@Oliver66FarmBoy Жыл бұрын
Relying on a single crop is a terrible economic decision. All it takes is one bad year where it won’t stop raining and you have no hay.
@farmingforfunandprofit940
@farmingforfunandprofit940 Жыл бұрын
That may be true, but it is hard to argue with close to 38000 bales sold, and checks received at an average price of$9.00 ea in just 6 months.... Heck one cutting this year 120 acres was cut in the rain,,,,, Rain has little effect if it is green...... In six years we lost 10 acres(20 bales) really not total loss we gave to farmer that had cows and he paid us $10.oo a bale to haul,,,,,,,
@Oliver66FarmBoy
@Oliver66FarmBoy Жыл бұрын
This year the neighbor lost over half his hay. Started to mould and heat up right in the windrow. Some of it had to get brush hogged and Tedded out just to get the new growth to come up through it. A little rain on it when it’s green is no big deal. Inches at a time and laying on wet ground that won’t dry out to boot and it’s junk in just a few days. You couldn’t pay me enough to rely on a crop as my sole source of income that puts you at the mercy of the weather as much as hay. Unless you were out west where your only concern is having to add more water to it.
