I made this simple homemade DIY trap for capturing wasps but it wasn't working as good as we wanted it to so my wife came up with a great idea that made it work way better and way faster.
I hope you enjoy this video and get some good information out of it. If you have a better trap that you use please leave a comment on how its built so we can try it. We don't have a shortage of wasps, hornets, or yellow jackets around here. lol

I just smear pate style cat food on the underside of the boards, works the best,of course the attraction pack is an extra. I've cleared a couple 5 gallon buckets so far this summer.

I found the water-filled tote & board trap on Shawn Woods "Mousetrap Monday" channel at the beginning of August 2018. The timing was appropriate - I had just found a large underground yellowjacket nest, and I'm really allergic to those critters. So, I got a big tote - 60 litres (about 15 U,S. gallons?), found a board that laid across the top with about a 2" gap on either side, then wired the remains of a chicken carcass to the underside of the board. What was great about that trap (for me) was that i was able to tie a rope to the tote, fill it with water up to 2-3 inches from the rim, lay the board across, then pull the whole works right next to the underground nest opening with a long rope. They really wanted the meat, and as soon as they'd loaded up, they'd drop and touch the water (i'd put in a few drops of dish soap to reduce the surface tension), and drown. And they just kept coming. And coming. I'd guess the number caught at 1200-1500 (it turned out there were actually 2 nests close together). The fact that I could put it in the right spot by "remote control" was one reason I wanted to try it first. It worked really well, especially with the large container underneath. I'm glad to see you had similar results - sounds like you don't like yellowjackets any better than I do. Thanks for sharing this. The pheremone you mentioned is not available where I live, so the "tote trap" was great.

I don't like yellow jackets at all. We were quick to put the traps out this year and caught a lot of queens as the came out from hibernation. We hardly have any yellow jackets around. :)

I've tried this method, on a smaller scale....pretty much only killed a bunch of flies....yellow jackets didn't seem to like the flavor of cat food I used I guess.

Take a two liter soda bottle. Cut the top off where the curve levels out. Turn the top around and insert it backwards like a funnel after you put a bit of bait inside. This is what I use to catch gnats in my home when someone throws fruit in the trash. It should easily work with yellowjackets. I suppose you could rig it up with soapy water inside it standing up and maybe hot glue some bottle lids on the walls inside to put bait in. I`d try it.

Worth a shot. I will try it next spring when they start coming out of hibernation. Starting to get cold here already. Early winter has me working on the house as fast as I can. :)

@@KoalityofLife It`s still blazing hot here in Louisiana. I don`t mess around outside this time of year because of the yellowjackets. I was stung over 50 times the last time I accidentally disturbed a nest. It`s always a big surprise. LOL! You never see it coming.

Dude, if you are gonna have honey 🍯 bee hives then you best prepare yourself for a sting here and there! What the commenter Heather D. said is very true!! Usually it will take a drastic reason for a honey bee 🐝 to sting you, i.e. have a hand or finger in the wrong spot & squish or pinch one, you would possibly & probably get stung. So you must consider this. Good luck 🍀 👍🏼!!!

I thought I explained it fairly well actually. The bait is held to the bottom of the board with 1/4 inch mesh and the bait is about 1/2 inch above the soapy water. Sorry for any misunderstanding, have a great day. :)

I agree. It was 11 minutes of chatting about an apparatus from a distance. I kept ff to see if you got to the trap and lifted up a board or something…nope. It’s a shame because you aren’t getting views or likes and yet you obviously were successful in trapping them. Maybe shorter video and actually show how you put it together. A thumbnail of all the dead wasps would get you a lot of clicks. But get to the pint and show how it’s done. People look for tutorials or instructions and don’t want endless chatter. A few small tweaks and you’ll be successful!
