I respect you for this. You showed us the signs of the illness and captured her in her last moments. It's nice to know she was relaxing just before death. It was calm and quiet and you didn't disturb her. Once an animal has rabies there's no turning back. Animal control couldn't have done anything but ended it quicker. @@ultragalacticgamer7195 Actually, nocturnal doesn't mean they're only active at night and hide away in the dark all day, it just means they're MOST active at night. Animals like raccoons, foxes, skunks, opossums, etc. are often still active during the day, we just don't see them much because they stay in places without a lot of human activity. Sometimes you might see a skunk or an opossum taking a stroll in the daylight -- this means it was mostly likely disturbed from its previous area and is moving to another, or it may be looking for food or water. A nocturnal animal being active during the day isn't a major concern, but rather the behavior of the animal itself is. Paralysis, wobbling, seizures, difficulty breathing, excess drooling, self-mutilation, unusual aggression (coming after someone instead of fleeing, or attacking instead of hissing/playing dead in the case of opossums.)

This isn't your normal red fox. It's a different species of fox called a grey fox. Very beautiful creatures if I don't say so myself. My personal favourite of the three fox species is the arctic fox.

Yeah, this looks like early stage rabies. Not close to death. She is just showing a slight problem with balance. Late stage the animal can hardly stand or walk. She also has not developed seasures yet. Including classic arching of neck an back. If it was final stage she would not be that alert and walk that well.

There’s 2 types of Rabies. Wild Rabies and Dumb Rabies. This fox appears to have Dumb Rabies. Rabies is inflammation of the brain. Why some animals get one type of Rabies over the other type is unknown. You’re talking about one the oldest Diseases in the world that still not a lot is understood about it

The symptoms are definitely obvious, and this looks to be near late stage. As for putting her down, a gun is as humane as any. There is no cure at all for the disease at this point, and leaving them alone to die a slow horrid death is both cruel and dangerous; as other creatures can also be infected. At this point, they are practically dead but don't know it. Testing wouldn't be needed as the stage of the disease is too far, and if we were grasping at straws to name the symptoms as not rabies it would still be severe neurological damage and organ failure, which would still come to the same conclusion of putting her down. All respect given for both the footage and for the care and empathy you have for the poor fox.

Thank you. They have similar behavior (friendly) after labor (so I've heard), but an expert said she was rabid. There was a massive rain storm that may have flooded the den, but the cubs would have also been rabid. It's taken me a while to get over that whole day. Mostly watching a cop shoot it. I assumed... live capture. blood test. euthanasia. active rabies culture for biologists... confirming it was rabid so people are aware and we have facts. They won't even go so far as sending out mailers unless someone is bit... a fatal wound (through bloodstream and brain stem) without immediate 36-48 hour attention. He put her in a grocery bag and told his intention of throwing it in the dumpster behind the police station. They see much wildlife out here, but enough to know that skunks and raccoons may find the carcass in the dumpster. The disease is active in blood/saliva for several hours of being spilled... I'm not sure how long it would incubate in a body... possibly longer? Very dangerous I imagine. At the same time, the officer turned a potential tragedy into quick work. I am not saying his job is easy or that they are incompetent or that he enjoys shooting cute animals. Only my request for different protocol. I will say that the close contact with this rare beauty was great during filming. In moments like this you only feel for the vulpes vulpes and not yourself.

Firstly, I want to say thank you for posting this, because not only must it have been heartbreaking but also scary. Still, we need videos like this for research and the public because not enough is being taught about how this virus presents in wild animals. It’s not always the snarling, foaming at the mouth kind of behavior. In our area people have been chased at and bitten by rabid red foxes who are openly aggressive, but just the other day we had a sick raccoon in our neighborhood that was not aggressive but was slowly wobbling around and kept rubbing its face with its hands. It could have had distemper, but at least animal control came to get it before it got any worse. I feel like children need to be taught this in elementary school, not just zoology and veterinary science majors.

Once an animal has rabies there is NO cure. The only thing you can do if you suspect your pet has come in contact with a rabid animal is to contact animal control and the will take your pet into isolation to watch for signs of symptoms. The only way to TEST for rabies is to kill the animal and check the spinal fluid(that’s where the disease goes to attack the body).

Obviously you've never witnessed rabies - spasms, twitching, convolutions - at an hour left the symptoms would be severe, spontaneous, and consistent. Which here it is not. The reason why you see the lack of motor control could easily be contributed to shock or severe trauma to an injured limb - in her case, her rear right leg lags.

It's a very heart wrenching thing to watch, it was even harder to watch it get shot and see her eye pop out. The reason it was called " in her final hour" was because it was roughly the time that she would be shot to death. Rabies or not... Believe me I still question it myself but I have to trust the expert. She also has obvious milk sacks so it was a question of being weak from birthing kits... den collapse.. etc. but they ruled it all out. I think they start aggressive and in the wild (like out here in the country where its not witnessed as quickly as suburbs) they run out of energy. Very sad either way but for facts sake.. I hope it was rabies so I don't look ignorant.

She wasn't yet foaming at the mouth, but when she tried to swallow, she gagged and the front of her throat was showing obvious spasms. She was drooling and unable to swallow. I was watching closely. She appears very disoriented and is trying to approach humans. These are all signs of midpoint rabies. It looks as though she's on her second or third day...

A fox is nocturnal and should not be staggering around during the day like that. A telltale sign is how tame and unafraid it seems. Rabid animals can lose all fear of humans. A wild fox should run from you, not walk toward you.

Currently in my second semester in vet med. Rabies cases are supposed to be legally reported whether wild animal, pet, or humans. The only time it’s not reported is if the animal is already dead like road kill, which is a problem in itself. The other issue is the fox was thrown in the garbage. If a scavenger mammal like raccoon were to feed on her it too would get rabies. Such irresponsible actions done by the wildlife officers in this video. This is exactly how diseases spread.

You know when I was a child I was sitting on my front porch and our neighborhood has many different animals including foxes running around but they never come up to humans for obvious reasons, well as I was sitting a bright red fox came and just sat next to me like we were old buddies or something and even let me pet him. Looking back I should’ve been more careful because he could’ve had rabies, but he never showed any aggression even after a while of being within a few inches of me. Just sat there and looked at the neighborhood kids playing with me. He only left after I got up so my mother wouldn’t freak out seeing him next to me.

I know this is super late, but foxes can become habituated to humans and befriend them. I had one that my husband named Toby, he was a red fox. He would sit next to us at our feet, come in our house, and he even brought his kits and fox wife to meet us (his fox wife was too skittish to come close, but his kits would play in our yard). As long as you didn’t try to touch him, he was comfortable being close to humans (though, as in your case, it’s not unusual for a habituated fox to be okay with an occasional petting). He hung around for many years. The last time we ever saw him, it was clear that he was injured, since he had a major limp and wasn’t getting around very fast, and I imagine he probably became food for something else. I miss him. He was a good boy.

@@Yzzami it kills the host because, unlike other pathogens, there is no evolutionary reason for it to keep the host alive due to how slowly it works, it's able to spread effectively without sparing the host, and it's hard for the virus to change brain function without destroying it in the process, so without any pressure on the virus to be less lethal, there isn't any reason that a less lethal rabies strain would be more fit to reproduce then the others. It goes for the brain because it needs to change the animal's behavior in order to spread effectively.

Even if this is so heartbreaking… you can’t help but feel a sense of calm… the green grass, the birds chirping… and I’ve never seen an animal so calm with rabies… she is clearly a mother, a new mother or a mother yet to come. She feels awful, but the way she looked when she came closer… it was like a child asking for a hug. Her eyes were filled with pain, a longing for comfort… she WASNT seizing, WASNT growling or crying out… It was like she accepted her fate… And she was completely cool with it… And with the whole scenery… I wonder if that helped her go in peace… knowing the last thing she would see, was a gorgeous meadow. Wild animals with CD appear to act tame or confused and are often found out in the open during the day. They appear disoriented and wander aimlessly. Their sense of fear of humans is lost. It is usually not until this later stage of the disease that wildlife rehabilitators see the infected animals. Unfortunately, these animals suffer neurological complications and will die. the efforts to try and treat at this point has questionable success for a pet, the cost for trying to save the wild animal is not available. mercy death is the kinder option, then letting it suffer longer. how about do what needs to get done > start a program in your area's city council [town/ city/ county/ state] to do as European countries have been doing to eradicate rabies [and CD] in the wild. seeding areas with food having vaccine in it.[ how much is life worth and everyone's safety? don't let the cost be the issue] the Carolina's, Tennessee, Midwest like Minnesota, all the way to the east coast is having a big raise in rabies in the wild again. it would be nice if the united states has zero rabies like England. also make sure your pets gets rabies shots every 3 years, yes some places laws still want a 1-2 year rabies shot record, the rabies vaccine that says 3 years on the vial is the same vaccine as the 5 year. but the law in your area is what needs to be followed. discuss it with you veterinarian and keep your pets and you safe. watch this video and if you can not notice the coyote has rabies in the 1st 16 seconds of video. while the man in car is saying the coyote isn't doing anything wrong. there was already more than 3 behaviors that showed rabies. magik knights The area of Texas where I live do the fly over vaccination pods for the coyotes, hogs, deer, raccoons etc. With the drought being so high the last couple of years, wildlife especially coyotes, move into the residential areas looking for water, which is also a way of spreading rabies to pets through saliva in their water sources. People need to know the signs and not assume that an animal is injured and never to approach them. Call animal control or wildlife experts or even police departments who can contact the proper experts to respond. Monitor the animal from inside a vehicle or home. Better to be safe and not risk your health. This is the best thing you can do for the animal.

Animal control has nothing to do with the police where I'm from. Nor do they car much for public safety (the cops or animal control). Also, England is an island.. Much easier to control rabies there than in the US. And more areas of the US have treatment tainted food drops, if rabies is present in the area. Also. There have only been 23 reported casesof rabies in the whole US in the last decade.. Its so rare that only a few deaths have been reported in the same time frame. Also, world wide there are only 69,000 deaths from rabies annually... So rabies kills fewer people than the flu, by a factor of almost 5 times... And thats why people aren't wasting money on controlling rabies, any more than they already do.

Also you aren't a fox or a raccoon or a possum so how do you know what it's like to be diagnosed with rabies. If anything the creature recognizes and physically feels it's fate. It actually stresses them out more and can be very dangerous. Come on people, this video is very educational for showing how a wild 🦊 fox should not behave. For the uneducated individuals in this comment section hating on this guy. You do realize foxes are nocturnal, right? Being out in the daylight indicates a conflict going on. This is a form of paralytic rabies it seems, loss of mobility slowly occurring in the hind legs, also you can tell her production of saliva increases and she has difficulty swallowing. And foxes also don't just casually approach humans, at the end her eyes were also fully dilated, which is unnatural in daylight. Nothing can be done once that disease reaches the brain. Get that through your heads that nothing can be done except end her misery. Rabies is not curable, unless you get treatment immediatley after contact. But after it reaches your brain, it's over.

I don't really know enough about rabies or whatever it is that might've caused this fox to show these behaviors but it's still so sad to see. I know that she's a fox and doesn't desire attention, and she's rapid so double that but she looks so lonely. It's weird how peaceful she looked but at the same time struggling to walk and looking at sudden movement, even of a butterfly and reacting. I wish she could've had a more peaceful death. Once the animal is taken away it is usually incinerated so there is no chance of contracting the disease in way. They are beautiful animals. Very sad to see them like this. The only one in the wild I ever saw was many years ago when I was fishing in a private pond on a farmer's property early in the morning. The fog was still rising off the top of the pond's water and the edge line of the woods was just starting to become visible through the fog. It was a small red fox that came out for a drink at the pond. I watched it for a few minutes then it heard me and ran away. Very cool to see them in the wild when they're healthy.

This can happen anywhere. If the UK still has massive rabies issues, then the foxes all over there would be a problem. They have more foxes in-city than out, if I recall. It's likely why they were one of the first to adopt a bait vaccination program back in like, the 60s. You see rabid raccoons and foxes in suburbia and cities enough that's it's a concern in the US, though.

At advanced stages with rabies, convulsions are spontaneous and inconsistent - the fox here expresses some understanding of its surroundings. With an hour left, this fox would be wandering around aimlessly and constantly while collapsing frequently - its reactions would even be sharp due to twitching. So no, this is NOT rabies. This is either canine distemper or she's in shock due to have severe trauma (be it birth or injury to the pelvis).

So im not vet., and by no means a specialist with rabies., but just by a clinical observation this fox does not appear to be dying of rabies. I would suggest lime disease or malnutrition., both of which would show traits consistent with rabies.

It would seem that NO ONE has read the description Rabies is not JUST foaming at the mouth and mauling everything that moves Rabies can take the form of the stereotype of madness and salivating, but it also can take on the state of tameness and disorientation. Look up rabid rabbit or deer, you see it running in circles. There is a known case of a horse with rabies as well. Ultimately this poor fox was tested and the results indicated with absolute certainty that it was indeed rabies
