Have you ever noticed the weirdly similar classroom scenes from Raiders of the Lost Ark and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade?
I've done a comparison/breakdown of them and what they mean to the larger stories.
A huge thank you to the channels:

This was great, and nothing I've ever noticed before. Watching I noticed something else that explains Indy's confidence. The classroom in Raiders has anatomical posters and the only artifacts and teaching aids Indy brought with him and set on the desk. He's sharing teaching space with another discipline. In Last Crusade, the posters are archeological and there are artifacts all over. Indy got his own classroom.

The biggest difference is Marcus Brody has changed as a character from someone who says he would go after the ark himself if he were a younger man in Raiders. A confident intelligent and able but older man, to a bumbling fool of a comic relief in Last Crusade. I prefer the original Brody.
@upstartcritic
@upstartcritic 7 ай бұрын
Same here. As a kid, it didn't bother me, he was just a comedic touch in Crusade. Now, I recognize I how cool it would have been to see the Marcus character from Raiders developed more. Unfortunately, for the production, that would have meant no need for an actual father figure, therefore no star power like Connery.
@gregboyington4896

@@upstartcritic Yeah Brody did seem like a father figure to Indy in Raiders, the way he looks at him with pride at Indy's house. That was a cool set too, to see a little of Indy's house, the decor and all.

@@upstartcritic It never, and still doesn't bother me. I would argue that in Last Crusade, Marcus is out of his depth and isn't the same kind of archaeologist that engages in combat and acrobatics like Indy does. His highly intellectual nature was kept intact in Last Crusade.
@daneast
@daneast 6 ай бұрын
I agree the change is a bit too jarring, but I also took it to indicate the Marcus was NEVER that kind of scholar. He was all talk, and when he did get out in the field he was totally clueless.

I love how he has to think about how to correctly spell 'neolithic', it's such a cute bit of writing/acting showing Indy's fallibility and a relatable side. I'd love to know the quip Indy made to the henchman before he took another punch to the face.
@upstartcritic
@upstartcritic 6 ай бұрын
It really helps give Indy the "everyman" feel. So many actors would have been trying to be too cool. For Harrison Ford, his charm comes across anyway!
@Theomite
@Theomite 8 ай бұрын
I wasn't with you on the memory thing until you pointed out the subjectivity of Henry Sr.'s appearance. Then it made sense. But there's still one point that sticks out: in between RAIDERS and CRUSADE, Indy has found the Ark of the Covenant, the very thing that represents everything an archaeologist goes in the field for. He also remembers what it almost cost him; the dangers of dealing with mystical artifacts of legendary power. These 2 factors combined with rescuing the Cross of Coronado would put a chill on Indy's determination to find yet another super holy artifact that almost got him repeatedly killed just 2 years earlier. My own supposition is that Indy never lost his thrill for adventure or finding new artifacts, but he was definitely done with "mystical object of great power" type of adventure given what happened to him the last few times he went there. Also, dodging Nazis and surviving the literal Wrath of God would probably make the trivial concerns of a Marcus Brody meeting or a classroom fairly immaterial, so his "coolness" is more or less a "dude, I survived a Hindu death cult and a Bonfire of the Valkyries, what do I have to worry about here in a classroom? P.S. Also, Harrison Ford in 1981 was NOT the Harrison Ford of 1989. If you compare Han Solo in A NEW HOPE with EMPIRE STRIKES BACK you can see the shift from Harrison Ford character actor into Harrison Ford movie star. It's the effortless command of a scene that he exhibits. But RAIDERS was shot around the same time, and the character of Indy was new. By '89, Ford was a veteran and he had his persona and he could phone it in without anyone noticing. That might also be a reason.
@upstartcritic
@upstartcritic 8 ай бұрын
There is always that element of what the actor is bringing to the role years later. And yeah, especially with Harrison Ford and the years he had in between the start of the 80s and the end of the 80s. Guy did SW Ep. 4, Indy 1, Blade Runner, SW Ep. 6 and Indy 2 all in the first five years of that decade. By '89 he was a different person.

I don't know if they really wanted this first scene from The Last Crusade to be a memory, but I certainly hope they did, and I always considered it as such because of one specific aspect of it. I usually hate what they did in that scene, I hate when other movies do it and they do it often. And that is making the entire 'genesis' of a character appear in a really short amount of time (Yes, I'm looking at you right now, Han Solo). In that scene, Henry Jr found his whip, got his scar, aquired his snakeyphobia, maybe even found his nickname Indiana as we clearly see his dog around at this very important moment of his life... and of course got his hat and the idea of his future outfit and attitude through Fedora's character. So many traits of his personnality that werent explained in the first movies happen in less than a morning. It's so.... coarse and knowing people from this movie's team, I really want to believe they were more subtle than that and that this scene is kind of a quick summary of a lot of moments that made 'Indy', all of them packed in a unit of time, just as memories tend to.
@upstartcritic
@upstartcritic 6 ай бұрын
I totally agree. As a kid I loved it! But with a more critical eye it's definitely a little...convenient would be a nice word. It feels like a superhero origin story, all of those elements so magically compounded into such a short time frame. Maybe it worked well in '89 because in a way Indiana Jones, John McClain, Stallone, , Schwarzenegger et al WERE our superheroes...?

@americossack3870
@americossack3870 4 ай бұрын
That’s cause originally they were never meant to be different colleges. In Raiders the college Indy teaches at is unnamed, both in the movie and script. It’s not actually called “Marshall College”, nobody says the name nor does it appear on signs/props. In Last Crusade, they decided to give it a name and called it “Barnett College”, prominently visible on several props. Problem is that by 1989, other Indy media like novelizations and comics have since given the Raiders college the name “Marshall”, so the only way to reconcile the movie and books/comics was to come up with the explanation that it’s 2 different colleges. To add to the confusion, in Crystal Skull the college is called “Marshall”, although it clearly meant to be the same one as in Raiders, and Last Crusade by proxy. Ignoring all the expanded media, the only explanation that makes sense is that sometime between 1938 and 1957 Barnett College was renamed to Marshall College.

The school girl with the Love You on her eyelids was supposed to be a young student Indy was in a relationship with. Indy dating a student was sort of a callback to his relationship with Marion Ravenwood, who was underage per her statement in Nepal. The falling out of Indy and Abner Ravenwood was over Indy seducing Abner's daughter Marion. The story of Indy and the student was cut from the script. More trivia, the idol shown at 14:37 from Raiders had eyeballs that moved and looked around inside the temple. There is a video here on YT showing the motorized eyes in the prop.
@upstartcritic
@upstartcritic 9 ай бұрын
@flashgordon6238 Yeah, Indy's past is a LOT more salacious than the movies alone would have us believe. That would have been creepier for sure with the moving eyes. I think I heard you may be able to see them move for a split second at some point. Maybe? It would have cool to see the character of Abner Ravenwood at some point, but that would have probably had to be in some de-aged Indy movie.

And it all really happens later in the whole movie 😂. I noticed it after I watched it for the 50x time or so. The script is just so well written and you can feel the huge amount of work that went into every scene. Regarding the declining of the quest: the Cross of Coronado was to Indy that thing that couldn’t be let go over all these years as the Grail was to his father. Indy had just finished getting what he’d had stuck in his craw about losing and obtaining, that eluded him for over two decades, and now it’s as if he’d achieved his personal fulfillment that drove him on these adventures. Raiders had him jumping at the bits not to let the fertility idol get away but, of course, God was waiting. Incidentally, it is an Abrahamic artefact that snaps Indy out of his mindset regarding his initial mission there as ultimately in the third film. The fact that _The Last Crusade_ involves the theme of letting go as Henry Sr. has finally (literally) found his Grail, and now the obsession calls to his son, despite it forming a toxic relationship between them over the years, is rather odd when you consider that the only thing still eluding Indy was his father’s presence in his life (stolen by the Grail obsession) only for his father to bequeath his own obsession onto him with the ultimate solution being, just let it go which his father had just learned. When one gets drunk enough to think about, and factor in, the 4th and 5th 😒 films, in either sequel, Indy has no earnest desire to ever partake the main quest unless there is some personal peril involved sorts like a personal obligation. Is Indiana Jones supposed to be merely a completionist? Or has his entire life been about righting that one wrong from 1912?

Excellent breakdown on everything, but there's ONE thing that's always jumped out to me with regard to Raiders. Indy says he "just needs" $2000 to go get the idol from Belloq, but in 1936 $2000 was equivalent to $43,750 in 2023! Was that kinda cash considered chump change in 1936? During the Depression? I would have thot Marcus' next words out of his mouth would have been, "Are you serious?"

Ive always pondered on these two scenes and their contrasts. I always looked at it that he's a renowned archeologist now and the interests of the students in the sequel show that reverence for him. I figured that goes along with his confidence. It's like its superpositioning his character growth directly. The apple thing was a good catch. I noticed he stole it but never thought about it being an accident because i never focused or slowed it during that part. Did you catch it before you started doing this analyis or after?

I hadn't considered the viewpoint of the students, that's great! It totally makes sense they would look at him differently too in Crusade. And no, I had not looked thay closely at the apple before. It wasn't until I slowed it down that the accident angle occurred to me.

Same scene, more realistic acting in Raiders. In Raiders, Indy was actually lecturing, about Turkdeen barrow near Hazelton, instead of preaching gospel about archeology in general in Crusade. In Crusade, he's more confident and also a pompous-ass. I'm assuming, in Crusade, it's THE FIRST DAY of class in a new semester; whereas in Raiders, we're in mid-semester. In Crusade, Indy is OLDER, probably too old to be leering at 18-24 year old college coed cuties. In Raiders, after narrowly escaping death several times, of course his performance is going to be a little "off" in his Professorial job in the classroom. In Crusade, narrowly escaping death doesn't seem to phase his classroom performance. In Raiders, he's like Superman and Clark Kent--death defying adventurer one minute, meek and humble Professor the next. In Crusade, he's just an all-around stud who seems to have grown weary of teaching.
@upstartcritic

@kthx1138 Yeah, by the time we get to Crusade he's pretty much always Indiana/Superman and not Dr. Jones/Clark Kent. I'm not a fan of the Pepe le Pew style wooing of the Elsa character either. I think I'm interpreting it slightly differently. The way I interpret it is that Indy achieved his fortune and glory (symbolically via the golden cross), only to discover that it had been distracting him from what really mattered all along. It's a story of a man trying to recover what his obsessions caused him to neglect. In the beginning of the film we see a man obtain his life's quest at the cost of his relationship with his father, then in the end of the film, he watches that father give up his own life's quest to retain his son. He initially has to be Indiana Jones one more time to save his father, but ultimately, the only way to save himself is to become Henry Jones Jr. The theme very much mirrors self-made millionaires and celebrities, and how after reaching the top, they discover that they're not any happier because of who they had to lose to get there. It's a beautiful film. It's definitely my favorite Indy movie. 1989-98 were really peak Spielberg. I like your comparison between the passing of the fedora and the attenpted passing of the sword, and how Indy had learned not to take the bait.

Considering he used the exact same classroom interior from the Masonic school in England, he clearly intended for them to be set at the exact same place. That totally messed him up for a few years, including Raiders. He bounced back in Crusade because he visited a shaman prior to the Crusade! lol Indy was much more confident in Temple of Doom. Great video! I’d love to watch a Last Crusade analysis if you ever make one. Regarding the idea that it’s 2 different colleges, I don’t really buy it, even though it seems like common knowledge among Indy fans. I think originally they were meant to be the same college, at least as envisioned by the filmmakers. In Raiders the college Indy teaches at is unnamed, both in the movie and script. It’s not actually called “Marshall College”, nobody says the name nor does it appear on any signs/props. In Last Crusade, they decided to give it a name and called it “Barnett College”, prominently visible on several props. Nothing indicates that it’s supposed to be a different college. They even shot the scene in the same classroom. If it was supposed to be a different college, they could’ve easily just chosen a different room to film in, but if you compare the scenes aside from minor differences it is the same place, with the same building outside the window and the same wood grain on the wall. It’s such a minor thing but it bugs me for some reason, lol.

Crusade is an inversion of Raiders. They’re about the same general idea of a hat wearing bloke beating the Nazis to an ancient artifact but the story beats is different between them. Raiders is about a man looking for the artifact before the Nazis could use it for evil and they explain what the Ark is to us. Indiana doesn’t have much influence over what happens in the story because the villains effectively defeats themselves and he indirectly impacts the plot in getting events to happen as they did. The Ark’s the death of everyone who looked into it and gets taken in for safekeeping. Raider is a pretty negative term associated with tomb robbing, thievery and raiding; both Indiana Jones and the villains wanting to find the Ark. Crusade is about a man looking for his father who is looking for the artifact before the Nazis gets to it and the Holy Grail is a well known mythical object. Indiana’s influence over the plot is more direct but he’s more focus on the personal matter with his father, being involved with the chase because Henry Jones Senior has been trying to locate it all his life and the villains are more focused on the object rather than the illumination the Holy Grail represents. The real Holy Grail itself actually heals the Jones while a fake kills Donovan who assumes it’s a golden chalice and it becomes lost again because it wasn’t to leave the resting place past the seal. Crusade is the name of the historical crusades but it is also a term referring to the hunt or pursuit of something besides it’s other definition in relation to the historical crusades; the Jones for the Grail initially before finding illumination while Donovan looks for the Grail with the hope of gaining immortality out of it.

Great stuff here, but I also think you're reading too much into it. It's obviously done on purpose, but to me it feels more like it's just a joke rather than subtly conveying information. And I think the joke is that Raiders and Last Crusade are really the same movie, except that the latter has Sean Connery and the father backstory, and this scene is a wink to say, yeah we know that, we lost the plot with Temple of Doom, but now we're safely back home rehashing the original story. The personality differences are interesting, but I think they are mainly due to the filmmakers not having fully worked out the character yet in Raiders. (This also happens frequently early on in TV series). In the Raiders version of the scene, Indy is essentially Clark Kent. I loved this scene way back in that summer of 1981 because it showed that in real life Indy was this nerdy college professor, who just happened to have this secret life as an adventurer. And that was funny, because the two are complete opposites. The scene is played for laughs at Indy's expense. Like he doesn't seem to realize that all of the girls are crushing on him, and seems thrown-off and embarrassed by Love You girl. But they quickly did away with that aspect of the character, and although he remained fallible, after that he was always supremely competent. I would have preferred it had they retained some of the shy/awkward aspects of the persona. P.S. There are four Indiana Jones movies. Really, Crystal Skull isn't that bad. I originally thought it was, but it's grown on me. It's way better than Temple of Doom, and about what Last Crusade would have been had Sean Connery not been in it.
@upstartcritic

Yeah, this was meant to be kinda tongue-in-cheek. A sort of announcement of my love for movies. It seems like some of the lore and intentions for the character should be taken with a grain of salt anyway. And yes! He is totally Clark Kent! And that came across so well in the first one. I was just too young to appreciate the character in '81. I can only imagine... And no shade to Crystal Skull (or DoD, which I have yet to watch). I didn't want to bite off more than I could chew on my first long-ish video. Thanks for watch and the comment!
