Hate to hear sales people tell walk-ins who are interested in a nitro “hey don’t get that go electric. Nitro is a thing of the pass”. I’m like hey bro he wants what he wants. Don’t stir him away from what he walked in here for. I respect both elec/nitro but if you want a nitro dammed it get you one. There plenty of help out there and don’t get discouraged cause Nitro lives babay!!!!🇨🇱👍

Great honest video...I raced 1/8 British and European rallycross and on road in the 90s and early 2000s fully sponsored by OPS Engines and Serpent...We never had heat guns or jackets before starting... and never cared about temp other than by touch of hand. I mainly cared about tune, if the tune is the right side of lean the temp will be fine. Never blew up an engine, never used "afterrun" Made my own 20% fuel, always used K+B L1 medium plugs. It's a simple hobby...The bullshit out there to complicate what are essentially remote control toy cars is staggering....

So glad you went through plug length an how important it is to run the correct one in an engine. Also advice to stop changing plug types all the time. There’s no information from hobby shops on running nitro these days so glad you’re able to provide practical advice that works for new and experienced glow engine hobbyists. Lots of thick heads out there with nfi, the world need the bug to educate their feeble minds!

And then you get people that just guess what is Supposed to be in their no one seems to want to look up the right one for whatever reason and that screws people up all the time that's why I compared it to a real car you wouldn't put lawnmower plugs in it you would put in what the manufacturer asked for why people have the issue with nitro is far Beyond my knowledge hahaha

I loved my XTM .247 I used to run traxxas heavyduty pulgs in mine 30% sidewinder. That thing was a BEAST. When it wore I dremeled the fangs in the ports and opened the intake on the crank 1mm and WOW it was runnin down WS7 and P5 all day. U lucky to still have one bro. Love your videos.

@@asproductions6400 if you are running without the prop they will usually last about 5 minutes before they over heat and never run again or if it over speeds they huck the rod. Just something to keep in mind.

A big problem is a lot of Hobby Shops have shifted towards electric more at least in my experience. All the ones I go to only have a few types (if not just the one type usually o.s 8) and they tell you it will go in any nitro engine that it fits. I always research the engine and it's original plug first. Great vid

Bug, I really like your videos. I like em all... and especially engine related videos. As I am FAR from being an expert, I like to learn more about them. I remember, about 13 years ago... I was freakin terrified of frying the engine in my first nitro vehicle. I got a steal on a like new Monster GT 8.0. (Not a great engine for a 1st one but I do miss that vehicle) SO many people were saying all kinds of different crap back then. "Do this, no ... don't do that." or " No, you want a caster/synthetic blend of x% caster and x% synthetic and x% nitro and x glow plug." Then I would have out my book and magazines taking notes... it was no f**king wonder nitro ended up taking a back seat to electric!!! People couldn't learn correctly and reasonably easily... and said Fu*k It!!! And put away their RC. With that rant being said... I don't know if you have made a video that talks about numbers of ports... or how timing is determined or what that means and how timing happens (since we don't have a distributor that can advance timing or retard it... or specific timing needed for a Lunati race cam.) I heard a dude say that the high port count Nova Rossi engines he used to have really sucked to tune and were finicky. If the temperature or humidity was different, you had to readjust. I'm am talking way too much... but I am trying to learn all I can... You are an excellent teacher for the lay person like me. Thanks for all you do for the nitro community. I hope this thing never goes away. At least not as long as I am alive.

Yeah unfortunately a lot of people have made the hobby sounds scary and super exotic which it isn't it's just a small 2 stroke engine nothing more than that. And as far as fuel goes just grab whatever you can get your hands-on unless you're running really old junk like I do. Keep the oil between 8 and 12% and 20 25 or 30% nitro that's it. And when it comes to port timing and all that it would probably lose many people because they can't physically understand what's going on just by looking at it aside from a bunch of holes in the sleeve. And once you start getting into engines with more and more ports yeah the tuning can become a little bit more sensitive as there is a whole lot more air flow. I found the novarossi engines to tune very well included the high port number engines. Witch you don't hardly see in my area. But absolutely awesome to work with. I will do another video about trying to explain port timing I don't really have a degree wheel or anything to give out any numbers though

@thebug4046 Well, I have not had anything fancy, myself... that's for sure. To be honest, I think all of the glow engines... model engines of all kinds... they are all cool. I mean, I would love to have a tungsten slugged engine, with ceramic coating and whatnot. ...But I don't race. For me, the model engine really is an interesting thing. It really sucks that so many airplane guys don't touch glow engines much... and that sucks. I'd love to learn about the 4 stroke engines, too. It's amazing to me that someone figured out how to make an engine like the 2 stroke glow engines. I mean, how does someone even begin to think, "Oh... here is how this can work!" ??? @@brandonpfister Yeah I hear yeah I do have a few 4 stroke engines I couldn't make a video about those although it's really cold outside I don't feel I get my hand slapped too much haha But as far as the Ignition system goes it's a tungsten wire buyer coated with rare Earth metal such as platinum which has a catalytic reaction with methanol that's literally the only thing that keeps it running and when you pull the igniter off and the engine dies although the plug stole is glowing when you take it out it's because the platinum is gone I made a video about that just because it glows doesn't mean it's good.

Just found your channel and wish I would have had this kind of information when I started. All that said, I have a Traxxas Jato 2.5 (yes I know its old) and I think I would like to mix my own fuel. Do you mix your own? Methanol and oil for 0% nitro? Have you tried different oils? What do you suggest? What ratio? Love your content!

Honestly mixing 0% isn't really all that it's cracked up to be. it doesn't cost any less it makes less power and is more sensitive to tuning and temperature unless you're engine has high enough compression ratio to help with timing. And as for oils you need specific oils that can mix with methanol. Or it won't work. Lots of Countries where normal RC fuel is illegal a lot of people burn 0% but their engines are set up for it. I only do it when the hobby shop has no fuel and it's kinda fun to play with but not worth it for daily basis driving. Stick with a good quality fuel with 20 or 30% nitro and no more than 12% oil. Epic info rant. I liked it. Yeah when I got my 1st nitro car back in 2002 the hobby shop gave me terrible advice, which doesn't help grow the hobby. Through my stubbornness I ignored all the noise and always defaulted to the manual/manufacturer guides and I ended up learning it all through trial and error and was successful. Yes OS8 was pushed on me for the rtr s-25 savage. Absolute garbage, I remember being pissed off when I seen the plug reach was different... and thinking why the hell would they recommend that? Only lost one weekend to that nonsense 🙄. It did take me a while to appreciate the difference between a modern rc car engine and the old school airplane motors (oil content requirements) when starting out. Can't go wrong with running good fuel / follow the manual. Lot of goofy stuff out there, listen to the pros forget the rest.

Bug, your literally my nitro knowledge source. To the point and clear. Ive learned sooo much from your videos. Regarding temping the engine using a temp gun during break in. Many sources say to break in the engine at around 200F - 230F. But is this engine block or cooling head temperature? I use a heat gun to bring my engine up to ~220F at the block but once I fire it up and begin idling tanks, the block will read around 150F to 160F after a couple minutes and the top of the engine where the plug is will read closer to 200F. Is this normal or should I continue adding heat with the heat gun to get the block closer to 200F? I am afraid of possibly overheating my engine by adding more heat. Also, it it ok to lean out the LSN a bit to keep it going under rich idle? Thanks in advance buddy and keep up the awesome videos!

I think it also depends the size of the engine like .12 recommends a Hot plug, probably give better idle qualities. I have used medium with no problem. I guess it also effects the durability of the glow plug

I thought the temperature of the plug changes the ignition timing of the engine for example the hot plug will ignite the fuel before the medium and cold. It has a finer filament and requires less energy to come up to temperature to combust the fuel.

thebug 404 blows me away even hobby shops don’t understand nitro engine theory, it’s as simple as a two stroke engine gets. No ignition timing and no floats or stationary jets makes it really easy to calibrate if you understand air fuel ratios and how it effects engine temp. Too little and it gets too hot and bogs, too much and it gets loaded up and needs to clear its throat. Just right and it’s at proper operating temp and is responsive 🤘

Yeah unfortunately there's a whole lot idiots out there that believe the OS8 plug belongs in every single engine because it runs and that's not the case. I have a video Explaining plug protrusion if you look for it. A lot of people believe just because it runs it's good enough and they don't realize that when you run a short-range plug it moves the plug higher up in the burn chamber and reduces the compression and timing. But they say it works! Sure but would you put chainsaw spark plugs in the car you drive to work? Probably not. Haha 🍻💯

@@exc3l0729 yes the LC3 or LC4 are both great. Be sure you have no fuel or exhaust system leaks fuel tank leaks etc.. I will suggest going to the Nitro RC enthusiasts group on Facebook im an admin in their. Post a video so we can see what's going on.

The r5 sucks in that engine the tuning is super sensitive with it grab a OS 8 that's what I run in my 3.0 and it makes a world of difference. don't run the LC type standard plug they are to long! Just a FYI

@thebug 404 great, love to see it. Pretty sure all you do is taken close the cap and blow through the intake and other tube while it's blocked off. Not really heavily but you can check and see if it's leaking around that old ring or anywhere else. Maybe with a little bit of fuel at it to see if it seeps out around the o-ring. I'm not stupid but I just wondered if you had a better way! Haha! Keep up the good work brother very informative at the same time with a little humor added. And I agree about Traxxas fuel, it's dog piss if you ask me

Yup haha they don't just put random plugs with random engines. But it depends on the situation to because some engines will come with a cold plug when it's not needed. Take the hpi g3.0 said to use a cold plug but it made the tuning a nightmare so a medium made a big difference
