Kudos to the Western Pacific Railroad Museum and the Union Pacific Railroad for making this steam locomotive meet possible. Thank you, Dan, for being at Portola, California to document to meet so that we could see this historic event! (Posted 31 August 2024 at 1059 CDT.)

Great video! I was one of the main planners of the event at the museum. As you mentioned, this was the first time WP steam had operated in the main Portola Yard in over 70 years. You also got WP 165 and WP 1503 in the same frame. WP 1503 was the last switch engine the WP ever acquired and also operates, so you had the oldest and youngest operating WP switchers in the same shot. Thank you!
@TheRailfanDan4 ай бұрын
That's awesome! I believe my father Charles spoke with you for a bit during the event while I was filming this. I did not realize 1503 was the last switcher so that is great too!

One imagines what the conversation between these two magnificent locomotives would be like: WP 165: "Oh, hello!! What's a famous and massive locomotive like you doing here meeting up with a little old engine like me???" UP 4014: "Well, I was in the neighborhood, and I thought I'd stop by to congratulate you on being fired up once more!!! Big or small, we both do our jobs well!!!!"

I still like how Reading & Northern had #425 greet Nickel Plate 765. They had 425 on the siding with the local while 765 arrived with the mainline train. Beautiful moment in railroading, hearing the whistle salutes between them.

That museum is one of the best RR museums out there. It is neat that they were able to bring 165 out there into UP's yard for the event. 165 has a nice fat boiler too, for a switcher. It was neat to see the 1983 back at Portola too. I was lucky to be able to get to go inside the cab and sit in the engineer's seat when she was brand-new back in 2005, when she visited the museum. Another good one, Dan. 🤠👍

Yes it is! A working rotary snow plow and now a steam engine too! Yeah the 165 is actually a pretty good size for a 0-6-0! Oh very cool about 1983. Thanks a lot Scotty!

*Insert David Attenborough voice* "And here we see the older loco leave the yard to defend his territory." *Cut to Big Boy rolling up.* "A rival loco has wandered in with his harem of coaches following." "If the smaller loco wishes to keep his coaches from abandoning him for the rival, he must put on an aggressive display to ward him off." *WP165 does a blowdown while its whistle blares, the Big Boy blows its whistle in response but backs away down the track* "The rival, not wanting to fight, backs down. He leads his coaches away, continuing their travels."

The size difference between the two engines is incredible. 165 is like a toy compared to the Big Boy. It's great to see a 105 years old steam locomotive in action. What is the meaning of the two green flags on the nose of 165? I'm sure this was a very cool event and you really enjoyed it with your dad. Very nice footage again Dan, thanks for the rare pictures.
@TheRailfanDan4 ай бұрын
I know crazy size difference isn't it? I like that little engine though and think its way cool there is now a real working Western Pacific steam locomotive. I'm not sure why the green flags on the front. Thank you Z!

I'm sure the flags could maybe mean they are like marker lights, green or red, but I'm not completely sure.

Well thanks so much! Unfortunately no I was not there for the run over Donner. I had to choose either that or the Feather River Canyon and I was much more interested in getting it in that canyon. I've got a couple more videos from time spent also filming it in Idaho and Wyoming on its way back to Cheyenne and then a massive video of all of these videos in one along with unreleased material.

On holidays I used to go to Railway Station of my town to see these Black Beauties pulling passenger coaches occasionally releasing huge amount of steam. I still cherish those mesmerising sounds of honking and hissing. ❤
