Thanks very much, Vincent. You and Stefan are my two favourites, maybe ONLY Dutch train drivers' videos we get to view. Near the end some container yards. I only commented this morning that I would love to see some loading and unloading of containers from trains. I knew where we diverted to the Venlo line as I recognised the stations up to the "R" one where the change was made. Wondering if I have been on a trip to Venlo from the other side. This was a first, with a lot of new stations from this side, for me.

It's great that you leave in the full dwell time at stations. The 6 minute halt time was useful for checking some messages. I know that sounds weird when I could just use the pause button, but I prefer real-time videos to be just that. I noticed that in the speed restricted areas a temporary barrier using what looks like yellow tape attached to metal L brackets appears alongside the track. Where do the brackets attach to at track level and are they simply a railway personnel guard barrier?
@CabviewHolland Жыл бұрын
Yes, personnel guard barriers. I believe they hook underneath the rail.

Wonderful video as ever! There's a rumor (it's on Wikipedia) and a number of other sources (but you have to be careful) that Eindhoven station roof is built with Bailey bridge parts (it certainly looks as if parts are that size), does anyone know the definitive truth on this?
@JacGoudsmit Жыл бұрын
It's true. Eindhoven is my home town. It's also the home town of Philips, who made lightbulbs and radios there. During WWII, the Germans occupied the Philips factories for their own purposes. The British Air Force bombarded the city several times to attempt to destroy the Philips buildings. Though there was a lot of damage that destroyed a large area of the city center (and a large number of civilian casualties), the Philips factories survived and the buildings are still there to this day, though not in use by Philips anymore. On September 18th 1944, Eindhoven was one of the first places that were liberated as part of Operation Market Garden, and as part of that operation, the Allied forces had to install several Bailey bridges over rivers and canals in the area, where the Germans had blown up existing bridges while retreating. On the 19th of September 1944 (the day after the liberation), the Germans bombarded Eindhoven, causing more damage to the city and more civilian deaths. Before WWII, the train tracks were about 100 m further South, at ground level. The first station was built in 1865 and is on one of Vincent van Gogh's paintings. The second station was built around 1912. Because Eindhoven was an important junction in the railway network (with connections to Tilburg, Den Bosch ('s-Hertogenbosch), Venlo, Heerlen and Hasselt (Belgium; this track was taken out of operation in 1959 and removed), the railroad crossing near the station was closed for up to 45 minutes out of every hour during the day in the 1940s. After the war, it was decided that the destroyed area of the city would be rebuilt as part of the Marshall plan, and the train tracks would be raised up, with several tunnels underneath to allow traffic to go through. The roof of the new (third) station was built with parts of the Bailey bridges that were left behind by the Allied forces. The station is still there (and is now a National Monument) and though the inside was thoroughly renovated a couple of years ago, the outside still looks the same as when it was opened in 1956. The old station was in front of the current station, and was demolished after the current station was opened.

Might be interesting to mention this in a future video. Thanks.

@@JacGoudsmit Thank you for such a great response, and answering my question. What a home town, to live in (I visited once on a day off when doing the Nijmegen marches, many years ago). It's a really nice story to see that something required for war has brought shelter and another purpose for so many years afterwards. Also it's a realisation that the costs both in lives and financially would go on for many years and reuse of the parts really brings it home. Sadly the RAF and the destruction brought to your city in the attempts to destroy the mighty Philips factories, mirrors so many places in the Second World War, and as a British person you travel Europe aware that history was erased and destroyed in what were occupied countries in the attempt to bring freedom. Certainly I've crossed the Netherlands in path of my Grandad and read of the damage caused by the tanks as they pushed through into Northern Germany. Many places sadly damaged, but many repaired too, but again at a cost. I always think how many families always had empty seats at the table post 1945. As you bring up the name Philips, it is certainly very sad to see how a company that thirty years ago was everywhere in the home, has shrunk and sadly closed so much of it's European manufacturing. Certainly in the UK we lost quite a number of Philips plants. I hope that it was a case of Philips moving to new factories in the area around Eindhoven and not fully out of the city or the Netherlands. Eindhoven must be unique in the number of station moves for such a major station, but as I tend to find with the Dutch way of doing things, it's always right in the end. I can't help just see that constant change and upgrading everywhere (Rotterdam is incredible for it). Thank you again for the response.
