I’ll fix the boot issue for you tomorrow. I had the same issue on my facelift 25, and managed to engineer a professional and permanent solution. It’s effectively retrofitting the manual option of the pre-facelift examples, but doing so invisibly so as not to impair the sleek, flawless lines of the facelift tailgate.

The best and most time effective way I've found to plug holes is: Firstly, don't drill the hole in the first place. Secondly get a piece of copper, clamp it behind and plug the hole with weld and cool it down, I like to use a sopping wet rag. Thirdly, grind it flat. Grind like you see the Foreman walking towards you and you're not wearing your ear defenders.

I fear that yesterday’s comment has been obscured by YourTube’s overzealous filtering. I used some medical terminology, correct medical terminology although somewhat out of context, which schoolboys would snigger at. So this means you would have missed the excitement of me getting stuck in a field during a lovely day out with Mrs Miller and making a humorous mistake as a result of an overly elaborate font. Don’t blame me, blame KZbin who I can only conclude are a bunch of sniggering schoolchildren. I too fixed something today. It was actually more of a troubleshooting exercise than a fix, but it wasn’t working and now it is and it’s because of something I did. The plug had come out a bit, I’m guessing it got caught on something. I also have a Dremel type that I can never find when I need it. I haven’t seen it in months. I don’t know if anyone has mentioned it but that wing is a slightly different shade to the rest of the car.

Hi Mustard, if you can find a brass backing plate it really helps to fill holes in sheet steel. I Did this on TeeCee the Cortina and it does help. Just an extra thing if it will help you 🙂

Nice find & repair on the wing, the fibreglass filler is waterproof so might be better for filling the holes. Incredible difference in metal thickness between mondo & Rover, very cool music there Captain. My Mrs proved otherwise regards a quick car wash today, broke hose pipe tap fitting, let the dog eat the spray gun end of said hose pipe & interfered with stuff in the garage, and her car looked worse so I re-washed it later, when she wasn’t looking.

I was considering keeping my L-Series 25 as a general factotum, whilst trying to keep the 75 in better condition, but my insurance company have scuppered that by applying a £155 increase on renewal for 2023/24... Which means I can't afford to run 2 cars. So I'll be watching your progress on Eric, and trying to apply some of your fixes to my car - which is in generally good condition, low mileage, but rough around the edges!

@@ProjectNigel Yes it's annoying a nearly 70 year old man with good driving record, doing 5000 miles per year, in a 23 year old 120bhp car - £651 pa from £496... I've done the comparison dance and they all come out about the same! Did try a trade quote - £3000 pa. 😶

Isn't it funny you find stuff you wanted a few days ago when you're looking for something else. Oh well you got more welding practice instead of using the impregnated filler lol. Since you're going to paint the rear wing arch I suggest paint the wing when it's off the car. It'll be more comfortable.

@@ProjectNigel I do approve the use of reinforced filler and normal filler. Been using then for almost 40 years. Did some fabulous bodge jobs in the 80's but then in and from the 90's I grew up and did really good repairs. Mind you I'm out of practice as I've not needed to do any repairs for years touch wood.

You didn't need to bother with those little squares of steel, just set the welder at low power and moderate wire feed and pretend you are filling the hole using a silicone gun. You might burn a bit of paint on the outside of the wing but that tells you the penetration was OK.
