Alice, Holmes is my favorite detective. Over the years I've read all of Holmes. The Speckled Band and A Study in Scarlet are my favorites. I was introduced to Holmes when I was ten in a classic comic books series. It was a great series that introduced children to the classics.

This definitely makes me want to dive back into Sherlock Holmes, it has been a little while since I have read any Holmes stories. I have always been a fan of the Robert Downey Junior films, and the music from those films is amazing!

I've read a few Sherlock short stories, really enjoyed Dancing Men and Speckled Band! Would definitely like to read a couple of the full length mysteries, I just wasn't sure which to read first so this was really helpful! I enjoy book Sherlock much more than film/tv Sherlock. The adaptations change him so much!

Loved this video, so informative. Everything you want to know about Sherlock. He is not my favorite but very important for setting the ground for detective fiction that I love. I also really do love Cumberbatch's Sherlock, it is very different but has a very clever plot especially in the first couple seasons.

Enjoyed learning about Sherlock, Alice. Remember reading Hound of the Baskervilles when very young and being quite frightened. Atm am reading a collection of short stories which contains the Speckled Band story, in Italian, which means it's taking rather a long time! Love the t shirt.

Sherlock Holmes is something I have been meaning to read properly for the longest time, have read small bits a long time ago but not recently. This video definitely will be an extra prod! I actually really like the Robert Downey Jr movies, though more for Jude Law’s brilliant Watson than Sherlock. Thanks for putting this together 😊

I've read Holmes' stories since I was a child in México, recently there's been a publication in Spanish of all of the books and I was fascinated by reading "A Scandal in Bohemia", "The Read-Headed League", "A Case of Identity", "The Boscombe Valley Mystery", "The Five Orange Pips" and "The Man with the Twisted Lip" (1891), with illustrations by Sidney Paget.🎉

I've watched a lot of different adaptations over the years like some of the Jeremy Brett films, at least one of the Basil Rathbone films, the Guy Ritchie movies, and both Sherlock and Elementary (I love Sherlock a lot but Elementary is my favorite modern adaptation 😍). Weirdly though, up until the last year or so, I'd only read a Kids' version of Hound of the Baskervilles (which I read because I loved the Wishbone episode that adapted it when I was little) and one short story. Then in the last year I finally read A Study in Scarlet, which sadly I didn't love because it felt too much like 2 stories instead of one but I did love the writing and of course Holmes and Watson, enough that I am really excited to continue the series. Next up will be reading the Sign of Four in December 🙂. Wonderful video Alice, I loved your enthusiasm when talking about this series and the characters🙂.

I’m glad you’re reading some of them. I think three out of the four novels do have a bit of that two stories as one novel element to them. For that reason alone I prefer Hound of the Baskervilles and the stories, but Sign of Four definitely has good elements to it. Hope you enjoy. 🙂

I think I've watched every The Hound of the Baskerville movies made in English. It is my favourite story. When I was a child, and read Sherlock kept his tobacco in his slipper, I went, "Ewww!" But my dad said they were probably a gift and too small, plus, they were rather gaudy with a long pointed toe. I agreed, they were not Sherlock's style. I loved the Jeremy Brett series, but now Sherlock is my favourite. I laughed out loud at the first one's title, A Study in Pink, and explained to my son that the first story was A Study in Scarlet. Both of my kids love to read. My daughter started reading aloud to her baby brother when she was four. ~ Jon in rural BC, Canada

I love Sherlock. My surname is Holmes and when I was little girl, maybe 8 or 9, my father convinced me that Sherlock was real and that he was my great, great grandfather. My dad told me Holmes stories that he said ‘were never published’. One of my dad’s best friends was a Watson. My favourite short story is ‘The Red Headed League’. My favourite portrayal of Holmes is Jeremy Brett, followed by Vasily Livanov (from the Russian series) and then Basil Rathbone. I do not like any portrayal of Watson that shows him as a bumbling fool. My favourite Watson is Martin Freeman, followed by both David Burke and Edward Hardwicke in the Jeremy Brett series. I also like Vitaly Solomin’s portrayal of him in the Russian series.

I agree Watson is far from a fool and the portrayal of him for me is make or break to an adaptation. Martin Freeman is an excellent Watson. I love love love The Red Headed League it’s such a great story. That’s so cool about your dad and Sherlock being your great great grandfather, what a great story by your dad. Thanks for your comment, it’s great to hear your thoughts on a character I love so much.

Just found you through Katie at Books and Things, and i must say i really enjoyed this video. I've not read a ton of Sherlock Holmes. Just A Study in Scarlet and Sign of Four, but if you're interested in off the wall adaptations, then i'd recommend the recent anime, Moriarty the Patriot. Its definitely not faithful, potraying Moriarty as an antihero trying to cause an egalitarian revolution in Victorian England, but the characters are great -particularly Sherlock and William James Moriarty.

I' d recommend to you an adaptation of a Tommy and Tuppence novel that introduces Miss Marple subbing for Tuppence as the brain that figures things out. Greta Schacci as Tuppence is perfeect for her role as the slightly tipsy Tuppence searching for the killer of Tommy's aunt. The adaptation is better than the original T&T book in which Tuppence is the sleuth, exploring the mysterioous death while Tommy himself is busy on a British government case but he returns in the end to help apprehend the killers.

❥I'm a sherlock holmes reader, but i'll watch the adaption just in case lol,, Anyway, i personally started with a study in scarlet, and i recommand starting with it, you won't regret it. ❥Short stories are all pretty good,short,and fun to read but i personally LOVE "a scandal in bohemia", cause it changes sherlock holmes pov on women., and he doesn't disrespect women later on in the story , unlike what he used to do before "a scandal in bohemia", paticularly in "the sign of four"

Sherlock Holmes is one of the few characters whose adaptations I have overall enjoyed, they can differ a lot from the originals without me minding too much. I tend to favour the short stories over the novels (apart from The Hound of the Baskervilles) but I think it’s the nostalgia of having been read them when I was younger. You make a good point about A Scandal in Bohemia. 😊📚

I don't those comics, Illustrated Classics Comics are no longer in print as I read them in the early 50s. Maybe you can find them in a collector's shop. I collected those comics but when I left home as an adult, my father while cleaning house, destroyed them. I turned my nephew on to Holmes, lent in collection. Love your videos, Alice.

The Holmes stories were my introduction to detective fiction, and my favorite adventures, closely followed by Dame Christie's offerings.. Of the pair, Holmes and Watson, I much prefer JHW.. I find I really don't care for Mr. Holmes that much.. My introduction to the pair, at a very early age, was "The Hound", but at that point it was via a movie.. I then decided to pursue the stories further, beginning with "Scarlet", then "Hound". At that point I became addicted, and have read the pair for the better part of 70 years.. Repeatedly.

I rather liked the BBC adaptation with Benedict Cumberbatch and Robert Downey Jr was actually surprisingly a good take with a few things that could have been better. I actually just got the 4 novels because I REALLY got into Sherlock Holmes because of Benedicts version I honestly like the BBC shows version of A Study in Scarlet a bit better which might be crazy.

That’s not crazy at all, I love the Sherlock series and I agree that Benedict Cumberbatch was great in it. I loved A Study in Pink, the references back to the original were great, but it didn’t pretend to be the same which I loved. They did a great job of that one. 📚😊

I tried reading the first SH book and the obvert racism was really hard to get over. I know, it was written like 90+ years ago but in the first page he refers to someone as to having the "strength of a negro and the wit of a chinamen" it's really immersive pulling. Any tips on how to plow through these obvious time sensitive cultural differences?
@AliceandtheGiantBookshelf
@AliceandtheGiantBookshelf Жыл бұрын
Understandable and this is a very complex topic and personal decision but for me some of my thoughts are that if you want to read classics from any era you have to recognise that what was socially and culturally acceptable then is not always acceptable or even palatable now. There are no tips I’ve found for getting over this - you almost have to view it as an historical artefact and accept that it’s in the past, and if you can’t then maybe consider whether you want to read it enough to carry on. This may not work for everyone and can vary from book to book. I hope that makes sense.
