A Real Doctor in Scrubs Plays the ALP Guitars AD-80 Folding Electric Guitar!

This is a demonstration and review of the ALP AD80 electric guitar. The title was not clickbait! The guitar folds in two different sections allowing it to be compact for travel. The AD80 features a combination of 2 single-coil pickups and a bridge humbucker.
The ALP guitars AD-80 can be used directly into a computer thanks to the USB connection and built-in 8 hours per-charge battery. This guitar features a locking tuning system, a tremolo arm, and a heavy-duty gig bag.

The guitar they are showing is not an AD-80 this one has a tremolo and the AD - 80 does not! Also, I believe the model we are seeing here has an ebony fingerboard and the AD-80 has a rosewood fingerboard

Thanks for the demo. I ordered mine a few weeks ago.... I was not expecting a toy (due to the price tag), but rather a usefull tool in order to play during my holydays and travels.... instead I got a REAL GIGABLE GUITAR, very well engineered and manufactured. A lot of thoughts were put into designing this gear. Mine is a special version in satin black. The sounds are very good, it'as a very versatile guitar. My only complain is the lower strap button location, too close to the folding mecanism, preventing me to use my strap. The bridge seems very well designed, but I would have liked to have a manual written in ENGLISH ! luckily there are some vids on you tube, teaching you how to tweak the thing. The guitar is rather heavy, due to his small size, but it is very comfortable to play and the gigbag (made by Music Area ?) is of high quality. A very good buy !

As an old player, I love it! I really couldn't care less about a "Real" guitar. It sounds great. And the convenience and portability, not to mention e usefulness of the headphone jack, makes it a nobrainer to me. Now I just need to look up the price.

DMSProduktions I think Australia did the right thing by closing your borders so quickly. My sister lives in Tasmania and although my mom got stuck there as she was visiting from the Uk everyone was safe because the borders had been closed and so had minimal cases. UK never shut the borders and still allowed flights. Hence why we have the highest death rate in the EU which is very sad!

Given the electronics inside I like hope a future variant would be reversible. Let the frame be take out and reversed, let the controls come out and plug into interface (and blank plug into anti interface) - not sure about pots. That is if they were on the edge where frames pop out from they could be reversibleand I think it would be same sense to a righty when reverse same for a lefty. In which case retractable controls (like on an over) would protect them more.

I do wonder, how's the bridge on this? Do the tuners hold well, do they feel alright to tune up? I'm mostly curious since that kind of bridge is the only headless-tuner-plus-bridge assembly I can find out there that has its knobs/buttons pointing upwards.

RapttorX If people want to test the tonewood theory, they should take the pups, pots, etc., from one guitar and put them in another made with different wood. I believe that any tone difference would be so undetectable to the human ear that it's basically nonexistent.

@@flux1968 - I totally agree with you for solid body - where I do agree with the tonewood folks is the feel - and by that I mean if you feel it makes a difference to your playing and that is enough to relax you to play great then awesome. I would just be too scare to drop of ding an expensive guitar so I stick to my cheapish ones and set them up to my liking. And that also means there will be more cheap and setup-able guitars for me to acquire :-) There will be hate posts now saying we don't worship at the altar of tonewood.

I like the headless design, particularly with the minimalist body. How comfortable is the guitar to play? Is there any neck dive? I think the company should consider putting the pickup selector switch in a different location, or perhaps use a slider type switch for a lower profile.

Thanks for your questions mate! The guitar is not as comfortable as a conventional solid body to play seated. The body is heavy enough to avoid any significant neck dive. The narrow spacing between the controls would make live playing pretty tricky if you have large hands like me. Overall the guitar is solidly built and fulfils the brief of a compact travel guitar! Check out our great mate Kfir’s killer demo of this guitar...Mission Impossible never sounded so savage!!

I'm hoping to travel after this pandemic runs its course and this guitar - along with the Steinberger GT Spirit - is a definite contender. However, I would want to swap out the pickups and I can't get a response from anyone whether the pickups are standard size and whether the string spacing is "Gibson" or "Fender". Anyone know?

this was recorded with teh stock pickups through a Line6 HX Stomp, each pickup is secured by three screws, not by 2 as most guitars, more like a telecaster bridge pickup. This could make pickup swap tricky, maybe?

I can't believe they couldn't find a better way to control the headphone-out than that third volume/tone knob. It takes up way too much space and pushes the volume control too far forward..

Looks cool and sounds good - Just not my sort of guitar. I'd imagine it wouldn't be that comfortable to play with that bar over your arm for long periods. Being that it's a compromise sort of guitar anyway, I'd probably move some of those controls to the top of the guitar and move the selector switch back . I'd be hitting that every time I strum

I have a china made guitar I got through eBay that's actually pretty cool but it's Achilles Heel is that it a similar style of bridge to this guitar and the tuning knob gears are very sloppy. You totally have to tune up from one direction, if you go back just a little it will mess up and you'll have to start over again. If you look close to the low E string tuning knob there's a small black stud sticking out, that's part of the magnetically held-in tuning knob "turning tool" to make tuning easier. "EDIT" My china guitar's bridge looks exactly like the one on the blue guitar at the end of the video, see it's got the "turning tool" also.
