Honestly, such an excellent film. I didn’t know what I was walking into when I went to see this tonight, but I’m so happy I did. Both Culkin and Eisenberg are excellent in this. Without spoiling anything, I want to give both characters huge hugs, both out of sympathy and gratitude.

I am very excited to see this film soon, here in Poland and it’s great you guys both liked it so much! I had a chance to see Eisenberg in Krakow last year, before the screening of his directorial debut. In case of A Real Pain, I’m very excited to see how he depicted Poland in its today’s reality. From the trailers I love these different parts he’s showing, it looks to be beautifully shot, and also I think the main action takes place in Lublin, which I remember Eisenberg mentioned as his favorite Polish city. Well, sorry actually nothing beats Krakow, but the fact is that it is really beautiful nowadays pretty much everywhere around the country. Guys, you DEFINITELY should visit! I’d love to give you lots of recommendations, even help to plan your trips, and happily would show you around Krakow :)

We've just got this in the UK and I saw it on the weekend. It's brilliantly written, and I think very moving. Intergenerational trauma, and not being OK but being with the guy who is also not OK but everyone loves. I loved the full circle, and the use of the title card.

First off thanks for not doing spoilers. I don't think I am going to watch this movie. I just wanted to know why Kieran Culkin buzz. Is about? Thanks for the review.

Small, specific & wonderful. Booted "My Old Ass" and "His Three Daughters," which is no mean feat. Jesse Eisenberg is superbly unprepossessing; Kieran Culkin is Oscar-bound. Lovely script, lovely shots, lovely film. Thanks as ever, Christy and Alonso. ❤️❤️❤️

Kieran Culkin's expressiveness when non-verbal acting was amazing. So, I really paid close attention to his face. A 1/3 of the way through the movie, I noticed that he looks a LOT like Michael Douglas! I whispered that to my wife, and she couldn't shake it off the rest of the movie, as she really saw it too.

This film reminded me of Treasure which I enjoyed more and thought was more nuanced but that one centered around a father and daughter returning to Poland for similar reasons and the dad was the charmer. Excellent film! This one was good in comparison.

My ratings anticipator must need calibrating because I was surprised that this movie got such high scores as well. I like Jesse, he makes interesting movies, The Squid and the Whale being an under the radar favorite of mine.

@@ReelTakesMovieBreaks It was fine but not really Oscar worthy except a couple technical categories. Denzel could always get nominated for most of his work but I think they will pick five other men. At least I'm really hoping someone like Terrance Macklin or ideally Jeremy Strong get that fifth spot over him.

This is just an okay film, incredibly overrated. It is decent, has a few good moments, and I always enjoy Jessie Eisenberg. I think that films that touch upon the Holocaust often get higher marks for that reason only. The last shot of Kieran Culkin is so great though that it does leave you feeling like the film was a bit better than it was. I found his character incredibly irritating and unrealistic though he’s supposedly playing the “keeping it real” guy but he really nails that final moment. This movie had a lot of potential but I feel like it missed the mark and maybe I’m missing something but I don’t feel it deserves the praise it’s getting.

Maybe it's because I had very high expectations, but I agree. It was fine - kind of shot in a minimalist Woody Allen-esque fashion (I guess the Chopin and the still-camera montages of Warsaw and Lublin also add to that). It has good moments but I found Culkin's character insufferable (I suppose he's supposed to be) and I didn't believe how the other characters interacted with him. I can see this being something you might love more if it was a film festival discovery.
@laserdisc68814 күн бұрын
@@TheDemonicPenguin I watched this because of my partner, and I have to say, I really, really enjoyed it. Maybe having lowered expectations helps with one's enjoyment of the film. I just thought a lot of it was hilarious (intentionally so), and the emotional moments were very effective. If I had to ding it for anything, I'd say it's too Oscar bait-y at times.

I think this is a little masterpiece. I have a feeling if this were a long boring movie, Christy's number would have been above 9. But critics typically penalize movies simply for the sin of being tight and entertaining, which is too bad. I was bowled over by the amazing acting, writing and direction. The title means a lot more than it appears. Culkin could be A Real Pain (in the ass), but the title could also refer to his inner pain, and to the general trauma from the holocaust and from the Jewish experience. Every Jewish person should see this.
@BreakfastAllDayАй бұрын
Glad you enjoyed it.
@laserdisc68814 күн бұрын
I wouldn't say Christy's number would've been above a 9 had the film been longer. Nosferatu, another film gaining Oscar buzz, is 2 hours 13 minutes long. Christy mentioned she found Nosferatu boring, and she scored that movie a 7.
@angelthman165914 күн бұрын
@@laserdisc688 You misunderstood. I never said that she would give a 9 or above to every long film. The point is that critics penalize tight and entertaining films. Art is supposed to be work and not entertainment 🤔

Meh, boring movie with flat characters. I don't believe a guided tour, no matter how small would have put up with Culkin's character for long before being refunded his money.
