Nice find. This was one of the lower end Fisher's. Fisher became a Household name in the 80's. When they were bought out by Sanyo after Emerson, they still put out some decent equipment. I have the Fisher 8500 system from 1980. It retailed for 3 grand, but it is all separate components with metal face plates, an amp the weights 30 lbs, and a very sophisticated turn table that uses a laser to select tracks. Of course you can use it manually also. The speakers are huge with large magnets, crossover and mid are Fostex drivers. The tape deck is a direct drive and the preamp has MC, MM at 33, 47 and 100K settings. It also comes with a 10 band EQ. The tuner is digital, which was pretty advanced for 1980.

I googled the 8500. That sure does look sophisticated. Speakers look similar! And wow $3000. I saw that on that old ad I found on the net. That's close to $10000 in 2024!

That is so freakin’ cool, that was pretty high end stuff for it’s time. I was 4 years old for most of 1985, so I was a teen in the 90s. I had a similar stereo setup from around that time period that my older brother brought back from Japan, that he found second hand. Sounded amazing. I wish I still had it to this day!

I lusted over those stereo system when I was a kid. They were gigantic and expensive. My dad, who is a technical guy, didn't want to buy those since he said they weren't good. He bought separate units and not a rack system like that. He had smaller JBL speakers with 8" woofers and titanium tweeters. He said his JBLs were better than those Fishers. Of course I didn't believe him. At that age I automatically thought bigger = better. He showed me the magnets on our JBLs and they were bigger than that Fisher. The voice coil were probably bigger too. He had a Marantz receiver that he said was better but I didn't believe him. A couple of years ago he sold his Marantz for $3,000. I couldn't believe it. He said you wouldn't get $300 for that Fisher stereo current day.

The one problem with those fisher stereo systems is that if you noticed the components in the back have special plugs that they only work with Fisher equipment. I had basically the same type of stereo I had 15 inch speakers, and the amplifier driver blew out on it, and the rest of the stereo turned into a paperweight, because it was very hard to find a replacement because it was repaired once, and it didn’t even last one day

I still have a working LXI system from Sears from the late 80s. 500 Watts with Phono, Dual Metal Tape Cassettes and Radio with Equalizer. System ran about $1000 at the time it was new. I picked it up at a Goodwill in the early 2000's for $10 bucks. Never have had the system over 2 on the volume, it is simply the loudest personal system I have ever heard sold in stores.

LOL. I remember Kenwood and Pioneer too. Kenwood I remember was the ultimate of brands. I can imagine the price of those back then. I did have a Soundesign shelfer. Got that one for my birthday in 1983. Mom paid $149 for it then. I loved it at first. But wished I had a "bigger" or more sophisticated stereo. Later I hooked up a Pioneer receiver to the shelfer. And built my own 15" speakers. LOVED THE POWER THEN! And yes, I do have a video of my system then from 1988

@@fueledbymusic3 I think the Fisher set up was like $600.00 compared to $1000.00 for the Kenwood. It was mainly just the name because the Fisher set up sounded great! That was back when Circuit City was where we went to dream, lmao!

I helped move a stereo like that and he wanted everything in the cabinet. It was so heavy he got it for free. He was upset tho that the turntable didn't work. That really didn't matter tho because he could put anything in the AUX.

you're right about the price i think it was around $850 my dad bought it in early 86' and he bought extra speakers fisher ST 840's they have super tweeter's in them. i have the 830's but like you said the high's are not that great for some reason. like other people have said online they couldn't have sounded that bad when new so maybe from just the age or maybe the crossover's inside. you can hook an EQ to it that's what i did with mine.

You be surprised how much they still go for.....Just the components alone can go for $480, and that's not counting the speakers and cabinet ... speakers can go around $400 to $500 depending on condition, and they are both original and the cabin alone can go for about $50 to $70 also depending on condition and it's original to the system all together about $ 1,150 I didn't count the LP. Not many are interested in them.. but if ? Around $50 to $100 in 1985 a fisher component ca 283 sold for about $2500 that was alot in 1985..
