In this video I give some introductory details on Canon's newest L Series lens. The new Canon RF 10-20mm F4 L IS STM Zoom lens is an incredible wide angle lens that has broken a record as the widest rectilinear zoom lens that maintains autofocus as a feature.
Has Canon just killed the fish eye lens?

I love what canon has been doing. 28-70, 35mm macro, the features on the 100mm macro, the 2 eyes lens whatever they call it, the short 70-200

Very informative - thanks. Do we know why Canon went STM rather than, say nano-USM, for this lens? Its a pity that we now have a gap between 20 and 24mm that we need a lens for. When we add that cost and weight needed to address the gap, the move from the 11-24 is not such a no-brainer.

Excellent Review! I'm a bird photographer, so won't get an ultra-wide lens, but I think you did a very comprehensive review. I agree that there is no point in going wider than f/4 in this range.

Certainly, there are circumstances where I would like a 2.8, but I find prioritize that number much more on telephoto lenses.

Could it work adapted to a SONY camera, like FX3? How well does the autofocus generally work across brands?

Unfortunately, you can't use RF lenses on E mount or vice-versa. I only made that comparison because I work exclusively with Sony cameras, so it's what I know best.

@@DOPJoshDiaz Ah shoot. I suspected as much. Just looking to invest in a light weight very wide zoom for my SONY cameras; FX3 and ZV-E10. I have a 14-24 f2.8, but it's pretty heavy and 12mm or 10mm would be ideal.

For weddings my 15-35 f2.8 RF is more practical than the 10-20mm. I would love to see comparison shots at 15mm on both though. Esepcially with people at the extremities of the image.

15-35mm is a great range for weddings. 10-20mm is certainly... wide.

Rectilinear is good for straight lines but not good for curves. When I photograph people with the EFs 10-22 (16mm FF equiv) I add pincushioning in photoshop to correct the shape of their heads. I'd rather a distorted door frame or wall than a distorted head. Also, I often add it in landscapes if I have pebbles or flowers in the foreground, otherwise they come out slightly tear dropped.

@GainesvilleKen You need a 85mm or so for good portraits imo...
@TonyGrant.
@TonyGrant. 9 ай бұрын
@GainesvilleKen - It's not my go-to for portraits either but there are many situations where I will photograph people with a 10mm on a cropped sensor camera (16mm FF equiv). I shoot people at a whole range of focal lengths. I often shoot portraits with a 200mm lens which gives a 320mm equiv' as well as shorter ones. There are many compositional reasons to shoot people at different focal lengths which I have always done. But while I was writing about photographing people, I wasn't writing about portraiture in the traditional sense. I use different focal lengths to control the background and foreground and I don't necessarily use a given focal length to zoom out to fit more into the frame or zoom in to get a closer shot. Often I choose a lens to control perspective or manipulate the background or foreground in relation to the subject. My rule of thumb here is to, step in when you zoom out wide, and step back when you zoom in - that's how I control perspective. @lbeetech - You may not have understood what I was getting at. There will be no comparison in terms of quality and the images possible on a FF body. But in terms of composition on a crop sensor they will be very similar. As you mentioned, they have a similar range, but they are also both rectilinear which makes them very comparable. I wrote about that similarity because there is a direct comparison from a compositional and technical point of view. @@lbeetech

You’ll rarely use 1.4, 1.8 or even 2.8 unless you’re shooting portraits, astro, or in low light conditions. F4 are good! The RF 14-35mm F/4, 70-200F/4 and 24-105F/4. I have a lot of 1.4, 1.8 and 2.8 lenses, but the 14-35mm F/4 is the one I use the most. If canon makes a version II of the 70-200F/4 and 24-105F/4 I’m going to sell all my 1.4,1.8 and 2.8 lenses.
