Alex takes the brand new Canon RF 10-20mm F4 L IS STM lens to Manchester to put it to the test for both stills and video.
**PRICE AT LAUNCH: £2579! When we were first told about this lens there was no price confirmed, but it was suggested it might be around £3000, as we stated in the video. We didn’t have time to edit the video before launch. At closer to £2500, this makes it even better and should definitely be one to consider for your video / filmmaking kit for those super wide views**
All stills and video taken were shot on a pre-production model of the Canon RF 10-20mm F4L IS STM lens.

Thank you for taking the time to make good images for us to look at. Showcasing what the use is. I am waiting for canon to make a RF 24mm 1.4 or better. But I can't complain about my 28-70 F2. I have used that lens way more than I ever thought I would, so the 10-20mm surely will be amazing. I don't do weddings, but I bet this lens will work so well for that gig. CANON, GIVE US WHAT WE NEED, A RF 24mm 1.2!!!!!!! 😜

It’s remarkable. Size and weight-wise - it’s gone from being a lens where you’d probably go out with locations in mind for it and really having to consider whether you needed to take it with you in your kit bag on more general days - to one that you could absolutely include every time you go out, “just in case” and ending up with really interesting angles and shots as a result. We think this will be much more popular than the EF 11-24mm as a result. Thanks for watching!

@@WilkinsonCameras yep 100%. I use my 16-35mm most of the times since it's light and fairly flexible, and only take the 11-24 when I have a plan in mind.

How did they manage to increase 1mm in the wide-end, add IS, at the same time make it smaller, and lighter as well. Best of all it is also at a cheaper price point compared to the EF 11-24mm at the time of release.
@WilkinsonCameras

It's magic! It's actually thanks to the RF lens mount and the advantages that mirorrless brings. That shorter flange distance allows for much smaller optics to be used, which means they can make things, smaller, lighter and pack in more features. Plus the R&D that's been possible in the 8 years since the 11-24mm. We were quite taken aback by the price point, when you consider the price of the EF 11-24mm at launch and today. Thanks for watching!

A major point is that it is for mirrorless. This means the flange distance is smaller. It also means it can be software corrected.

This is just what I've been waiting for as I have all the L glass to cover 15mm to 1000mm, I'm just looking for the super wide to get me down to 10mm. This design with no distortion to lines is great, as my other wide lenses all distort. I have an R3 and due to its excellent low light ability I think this f4 will be like putting an f2.8 on the R5. I live in Jersey so there's plenty to use this lens on. I also do astrophotography which I'd use this lens for, where the lack of distortion should be great, along with the lens coatings. Great photos by the way!!

Hi John, thanks for watching and glad you like the photos! Sounds like you have a very impressive lens range! I think it’s a great addition to the lineup. The fact that it’s F4, but has 5-stop IS means that the aperture is less of a concern / paired with the low light capabilities of some models. We’d love to try it for Astro - perhaps we can get hold of a full production model later in the year 😊 Please get in touch at sales@wilkinson.co.uk if you’d like to arrange a purchase - we can remove the VAT for you before purchase as you’re based in Jersey ☺️

@@JohnScarrott in our professional opinion... we don't think this will be seen in a cashback for some time yet or that it will be discounted in any way so early into its life and when stock isn't even on the shelves yet. It has been included in the Lens Reward promotion though, so should you be buying a new body any time soon (and we're still confident we won't see an EOS R5 II in 2023!) then you may well be able to claim cashback that way. Full info on Lens Reward here: www.wilkinson.co.uk/canon-lens-reward (if the 10-20mm hasn't been added to the list at the time you read this, then it will be shortly!)

We watch lots of videos about kit we may not need or end up owning, because we like to see the latest tech and be inspired! With regards to your EOS 2000D, it's a great starting point and you can learn the skills of photography, how apterture, shutter speed, etc. work, composition and learn your favourite genres and then in the future if you feel a need to upgrade you will know exactly which features you would like and which you really need and be able to make an informed choice about a mirrorless camera 😊 Thanks for watching!

I'm afraid it's not the widest fullframe zoom lens with AF. That would be the Canon 8-15mm F/4 L EF lens, which obviously is not rectiliniar, but it is an AF lens.
@WilkinsonCameras
@WilkinsonCameras 9 ай бұрын
According to Canon, "The RF 10-20mm F4L IS STM is the widest AF zoom ever made for a full-frame camera" - with the caveat that is excludes fisheye lenses, given that they aren't overly practical!
@EmeraldAudiovisual
@EmeraldAudiovisual 9 ай бұрын
@@WilkinsonCameras images taken with fisheye lenses need work in post, sure, but whoever came up with that statement in Canon, clearly doesn't know their lineup. Should have included "linear" or "rectiliniar" in that.

I love how Canon is suing manufacturers who reverse engineer their lens mount, and yet they're not releasing any of the f/1.4 lenses they had on their EF mount... their strategy from a financial standpoint is great for Canon because their users who want to go mirrorless don't have many options. As a hybrid shooter, that travels a lot, I decided to go back to Fuji with the X-H2S and I've got a GFX 100 II waiting for me when I get home from my current project I'm working on!
@WilkinsonCameras
@WilkinsonCameras 9 ай бұрын
The lens mounts do have to be licensed from the manufacturers and stealing the design to profit from Canon’s R&D camera system is not cool. Because please remember that the lens makers who are illegally using the RF mount aren’t doing it for the greater good - they’re doing it to make their own profit. Nikon took a while to release Z mount to 3rd parties, starting with crop-sensor only. Canon will follow suit in time. But as the people spending the time and money making this technology in the first place… is it not their right to get that investment back and to profit from it? But onto the GFX 100 II - it’s absolutely incredible… we love this camera so much. Feel free to check out our recent review of that as well. You’ll love it, it’s hard not to! Thanks for watching and it’s always nice to enter into discussion with passionate photographers 😊

Why did you come on here, a review of a 10mm Canon ff lens to talk about your crop sensor Fuji ? I have the RF 10mm - it is an amazing sharp and very wide lens, and has a fov of 135° diagonal. There is no lens for your Fuji to do this - not even close. Let me repeat, my RF 10-20mm is an amazing lens, and is unsurpassed imo.

Suddenly a F4 is great , Suddenly a F4 can do astro 😂😂, why when something is expensive is it good, why was the 14 35 not good for astro ?
@WilkinsonCameras
@WilkinsonCameras 9 ай бұрын
Canon do suggest you can use the RF 14-35mm F4L IS USM for astro. Astro is a pretty broad genre, so while an F4 wouldn't be ideal for all elements of it, it's perfectly fine for some. Talking about lens apertures on the whole - an F4 lens on a DSLR without IBIS and with older, more limited IS is a very different beast from an F4 on a modern mirrorless camera with both IBIS and lens IS... you can still get the extra light you need, without upping ISO or requiring that faster aperture - simply by using a longer exposure. Generally speaking, super wide angle lenses like this aren't going to be being used by people who need super fast shutter speeds, so F4 is a great compromise on price, weight, size. Canon's lens lineup is growing all the time... if they see a need for a 10-20mm F2.8 or a 14mm F2 L series lens, then no doubt they'll introduce it. But note how they're redesigning all their EF lenses to do more, offer more, be better. This takes time.

I love the way you giggle through the "it's a bit expensive for a vlogging lens" 🤣. Looks like a great lens, but for an f4 lens, the price seems outrageous - total cash grab that forces people to buy it because they've locked access to the RF lens mount.
@WilkinsonCameras
@WilkinsonCameras 9 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching! You know... it actually made a great vlogging lens. The views it gave were really immersive. Decided not to put this in the video though because in reality... who is paying that to vlog with? 🤣 We did pop the confirmed price in the comments - it's launching in the UK at £2579, which is much better than we'd originally been told and in line with the other lenses in this range from Canon. There's quite a lot of new tech in this lens in particular. We'd say the price is fair... but totally take on board that £2.6k is NOT pocket money and is a serious and considered investment, far out of most casual shooters' price range.
