Let's tour part of our 1 year old food forest. It's done a great job of increasing privacy while producing fresh food. A lot has changed in one year. I wanted to get a quick video in before I chopped and dropped some of the Tithonia diversifolia (Mexican sunflower) shading the guava and harvested the sugarcane leaning towards one of the orange trees. It is the end of September, and it's time to open up the canopy for my heat-loving plants and get a layer of green mulch down.
This part of the yard is packed with fast-growing plants with dense foliage for quick privacy.
Our top performers in this video:
Sugarcane - blocks the view and sound. Very fast growing.
Clumping bamboo - took a couple of months to settle in, then exploded in growth.
Tithonia diversifolia - big broad tropical looking leaves it can be cut back and regrown multiple times in one season
Hong Kong Orchid - was a surprisingly fast grower and filled in quickly after blooming in the spring.
Moringa - in this part of the yard, they are being grown as a low hedge to western shade new citrus trees and provide delicious greens in the summer.

This kind of growth in the desert would be impossible without a generous layer of mulch. I use a combination of drip, deep hose, and a sprinkler to water after dark or early morning. This is the most water-efficient way to increase humidity and reduce pest load without using chemicals. An adorable bonus of using a sprinkler is that hummingbirds will fly into and perch near the water spray to bathe!
So far, Aqua Joe has been the most durable sprinkler in the desert. amzn.to/3M6jZKh
