Michael Hordern was a British actor of an exceedingly wide range with the ability to hook viewers of every age! However, he began his career on a very different path!
When Michael Hordern decided an acting life was for him he was to write that he wanted to be an actor not because he THOUGHT he was good at it but because he KNEW he was keen!
Born in 1911, Michael Hordern would live through two World Wars - putting his career on hold to take a role as a naval officer in the Second World War!
Knighted in 1983 Sir Michael Hordern was both a versatile and prolific actor who achieved a truly distinguished career in British show business - and like many actors of his generation, he was the ultimate professional and workaholic but he was able to find the greatest relaxation and comfort in his much-loved fishing, which he acknowledged was often at the cost of his family! Being more at home in the countryside than in the town.
With a career that spanned over seven decades - Michael Hordern worked with just about every famous actor and playwright that can be named - he was much loved and adored by his family, friends, and colleagues. He was a character actor of great real-life character, who was always a fisherman before all else!

In the late 1980s I was visiting my then-boyfriend and his parents in Watlington, South Oxfordshire. My boyfriend's mum said that one of the local village churches was being used as a film location. She said one of the stars there was Michael Hordern and in-between long takes he was entertaining the local children with Paddington Bear stories. This has always made me smile as it shows what a lovely person he was.

A distant relative, I'm Australian, but lived for many years in London. I met Sir Michael, once, he was very old, but very charming & kind & knew exactly who I was... I can confirm that he did indeed love fishing. While happily married, most of his friends were gay. I thought that especially cool in the early 90s. Interestingly, Sir Michael looks like all the male Horderns in my family.

Michael Hordern - Triumph, Tragedy and a Fisherman's Tale! whistle and I'll come due to the incredulity of himself having to face the fact he's about to have a mental breakdown. his ham act as the fortune teller in a sideshow tent during the film: Medusa touch is odd. it's an odd film for odd people. a fav film of mine...what films do I need look out for wherein he had the lead role. he seems more a bit player than a megalomaniacal starlet...

Jack Hargreaves "Out of Town presenter" lived in the semi-detached house next to Michael in Bagnor. My Father's company renovated Michael's cottage and did ongoing maintenance work. I met him on many occasions along with Eve & Joanna. A truly lovely man, much missed.

Magnificent actor with a very distinctive fruity kind of voice, which I imagine carried quite a distance on stage especially. I watched 'Passport to Pimlico' on the BBC iPlayer only last week. My personal favourite role of his was as a butler in the Ronnie Barker 'silent' comedy 'Futtocks End and he similarly excelled as Jeeves on BBC radio. Well done Shar on such a detailed biography. I really enjoyed this bio of Sir Michael Horden. What a talent he was. That unmistakable voice. I wish I had been able to see him on stage. My favourite film he starred in is "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum". In 1995 Brighton College named a room after Sir Michael to commemorate the school's 150th anniversary.

Oooh, saving to watch: Michael Hordern is one of my all time favourite actors. Saw him live in "Jumpers" back in the 70's, and loved his film roles, too.

Leslie Phillips, George Cole and Michael Hordern one after the other and I'm 'In like Flynn' from down under for a subscription. Now there's an idea...Errol Flynn, the very epitome of your channel's brand. I can remember being quite shocked as a young lad to read of Flynn's use of LSD in one of David Niven's brilliant pair of autobiographies. Robin Hood on acid ? Heaven forfend (but a jolly good excuse for you to visit LA.) With reference to this particular episode I would have cited Sir Michael's glorious cameo of a confused, senile butler in The Missionary. One of the reasons I love British film, tv and radio dramas so much are the infinite connections one can observe amongst the casts and how often the players of junior parts themselves grow to be masters of the craft. You only have to peruse the cast of the Missionary to spot such modern luminaries such as Tilly Vosburgh and Anton Lesser. Now, a delve into your back catalogue has offered up many goodies but Mary Millington has leapt out at me.....

Another great video. As an M.R. James fan, Michael Hordern drives me mad with his portrayal of "Parkins" in Jonathan Miller's Omnibus TV adaptation of James's "Oh whistle, and I'll come to you my lad." (1968) In my opinion, Michael Hordern was too old for the part, and his portrayal was of someone who was clearly "off their head" from the start, which it wasn't in James's original story. Plus the fact, MH is always eating as well. Gannet! (LOL) That said though, MH did many a M.R. James audiobook, and these are, in my opinion, the finest audiobook readings ever of James's work. Favourite film? Well, I share that one with you...the wonderful "Theatre Of Blood." WHAT A CAST in that film. ❤

One of my favourite films again playing opposite Richard Burton was Where Eagles Dare. I've lost count of the times I've watch it, but I always remember the radio call sign. "Broadsword calling Danny Boy" weird how you remember the little bits, probably because I've watched it so many times. I really like your channel, the flowers you leave at the end of your narrative really finishes the subjects story off beautifully.

He was a marvellous actor wasn't he I think though I remember him more with Paddington as a child I loved those. I saw him once on stage when he was quite old but it was lovely to see him although he wasn't in it much , thanks Shar what a beautiful church and so quiet. I'm not sure why I had not subscribed before, having adored some of your other videos, but thank goodness the algorithm returned me to you! I'm in my mid 40s, but Sir Michael is a huge part of my childhood - I think he may have narrated the entire audiobook of Wind in the Willows I used to listen literally every night for years. Your research is so deep on your subjects and your affection for them so great it is like being a child again listening to that collective hug of a voice Sir Michael Horden had. What a tribute to the man you have given. And it is my luck that your obvious passion happens to overlap so many of my own favourites that, as a kid, my dad would say, "there's none better". He was right, and you do them proud.

I never cover anyone I’m not interested in, and I think that keeps me enthusiastic ❤️ Growing up, we just take in so much information and form opinions without even realising it until we’re older - people like Sir Michael weren’t just entertainers - they sparked interest and creativity and education, for example watching Paul Scofield play Sir Thomas More in a Man for all Seasons was part of the spark that set me off on the road to loving history and in particular the Tudors and watching Olivier (and Robert Lindsay actually!) in Hamlet brought Shakespeare to life for me which opened up the history of English literature. Also, they often jog our memories and emotions - recalling happy family and friends times - sometimes sad times too - but for me there is also the element of time travel which I love! Thank you so much for subscribing - it’s very appreciated! Xx

I must tell you that some of your videos make me cry at the end, especially when people are taken from us too early, like Jack Wild. It is always very touching when you leave flowers on the graves, you have a good heart. Do you sometimes cry when filming? I do get very emotional and I do often cry - sometimes I’m not expecting it and it really hits me! Jack Wilde being one of those moments - I always visit the grave before I film - and on that occasion the minute I saw his grave I completely lost it - I literally had to return to the car and pull myself together before I could go on! Some of us in the States do love Mr. Hordern’s acting. It’s fascinating to hear about his upbringing but I believe Hordern’s King Lear to be the best I’ve seen. I only became aware of him after he’d passed on, when I saw him play Marley’s ghost (“A Christmas Carol” (1951) as we call it here) the first time. I liked his delivery. He had such nuanced performances.

Another powerful, versatile British actor of the calibre we no longer produce. I had to look up the details of two parts he played towards the end of his life: In 1989 he appeared alongside John Mills in an adaptation of Kingsley Amis's Ending Up, a tale about a group of pensioners growing old together in a residential home. After that he took the part of Godfrey Colston in Memento Mori, a television film about a group of elderly friends succumbing to old age, which was adapted for television from the Muriel Spark novel of the same name. Two rather fitting roles I thought.

I completely agree - Micheal Hordern’s generation of actors were so dedicated and hard working - the would strive for perfection and truly delivered it - although one story I left out (I hate making cuts but I could talk for England in the subject and the videos would be way too long 🤭) was the last night oh Michael in King John - his doctor had given him som ‘pep pills’ and told him to take one 6hrs before he needed energy - he had resisted taking any but at this time said he was virtually on his knees with exhaustion so he gave it a go - it was the last night and while ‘slapping on’ his makeup before the performance he also downed a couple of glasses of champagne - he said he thought he gave a particularly wonderful performance which he considered to be ‘the definitive performance of King John’ until… after the show he said Eve’s face was a picture - she was horrified and said ‘what we’re you doing? You were simply terrible - all over the place - what in earth was wrong with you? Michael was mortified and said it was a lesson learned! 🤭🤭🤭

Another great British actor well remembered Dont ask me what it is was called but i remember Michael in a very outlndish program where at the end it was raining and was crawling about. Love this man HIS voice just mellows me His M R James work is brilliant It's silly but I heard the Paddington theme tune recently and started to cry because my late mum used to read me the stories and then of course Michael Hordern did the voices for the TV programme And me and mum used to watch together She used to go to the theatre a lot back in the 50s and 60s and I know she saw Michael in various plays and dramas mainly in London My mum was 58 when she died back in 1997 My dad died in 1989 he was 56 He died the day before the Berlin Wall came down Sorry I'm rambling Michael Hordern was brilliant as a fortune teller in THE MEDUSA TOUCH with the man with the best voice of all Richard Button If you get a mo listen to Jeff Wayne's War of the World's Burton does the narration Anyway Michael Hordern is fabulous I always link him with the legend that was Robert Morley Oh yes Michael did The Green Man a 3 part horror drama with Albert Finney also Thank you for this I know you've mentioned some of the things I've written Yours is more interesting though from David 🌈❤️📽️📺

A man with a wonderful voice, so distinctive, which was made for narration. Of all his film roles, the one that immediately comes to mind, is the jealous father in the Spanish Gardener. Another wonderful actor who read stories on Jackanory . I never knew he was a good friend of Richard Burton. What a beautiful churchyard to end one's days, I'm guessing he choose that area for its chalkstreams. Thank you Shar.🌷

Oh Richard Burton is another fascination of mine! What a superb actor - I’m a huge fan of Elizabeth Taylor too - so I’ve always been interested in their antics as a couple 🤭 Now Frank Finley I adore! I’ve taken flowers to his final resting place and very much want to make a video about his life - he is buried in the same cemetery as my friends dear father - so we are going to plan a trip together when she next visits her dad and grand parents x I would have loved to have seen them - did you ever see Diana Dors? Great actor, I consider myself very lucky to have seen such a legend on stage in Trelawney of the Wells at the Yvonne Arnaud theatre in Guildford. It was probably only a few years before he died. Coincidentally my grandfather was born and raised in a house in Marine Parade, Brighton and then moved to Highgate in London. I wonder if their paths ever crossed 🤔
