Please join me in this video, Leslie Phillips - Chingford's Charmer - Beyond the Laughter.
I return to Chingford Mount Cemetery to take flowers and visit the final resting place of the distinguished actor Leslie Phillips.
Renowned for his aristocratic charm and eloquent delivery, Leslie Phillips effortlessly manoeuvred between the realms of comedy and drama, leaving an enduring imprint on the entertainment scene.
Beyond the laughter and the polished exterior, we delve into the fascinating duality of a man who, despite embodying upper-class characters on screen, maintained a genuine connection to his roots. In essence, Leslie Phillips always considered himself a proud cockney kid from Chingford in Essex - Chingford's charmer.
Charming audiences with his distinctive voice he has left an indelible mark on both film and television, a true icon in the world of entertainment - from early roles to performances that have stood the test of time. From classic comedies such as the Carry on films to dramatic masterpieces like Empire of the Sun, Leslie Phillips' versatility as an actor shines through in every frame.
We’ll shed light on the man behind the characters, whose career would span decades and whose charm and charisma made him a beloved figure on and off the screen. A man who confronted numerous hardships throughout his life with unwavering dignity and resilience.
Whether it's his memorable catchphrases, impeccable comedic timing, or the sheer gravitas he brought to dramatic roles, this video celebrates the multifaceted talent of Leslie Phillips.
Whether you’re a long-time fan as I am, or just discovering Leslie’s work, this video is a tribute to the enduring legacy of a true acting legend.
So, grab your popcorn, settle in, and join us as we pay homage to Leslie Phillips.

I thought Carry on Teacher was Leslie's best of the carry ons...and the way he handled pronouncing the Teachers name Mrs Alcock and "getting one over" the censor,"I just flattened it and used my facial expression...he(the censor) he did us a favor" RIP Leslie Auckland New Zealand 2024

Absolutely, "Carry On Teacher" is indeed a classic in the series, and Leslie Phillips' performance as the smooth-talking Mr. Alistair Grigg is iconic. His clever handling of the name Mrs. Alcock, along with his witty facial expressions! Joan Sims was absolutely brilliant and I loved the glimpses of a young Carol White! Thank you for sharing your memories from Auckland, New Zealand! xxxxx

He was my crush way back in the 50’s and it was no secret that I always burned a candle for him. My eldest son took me to the National exhibition Centre in Birmingham to meet Lesley Phillips in about 2010. I think it would’ve been when he was signing autographs at a convention for people dealing with movie, props and things like that, he was an absolute darling and I still treasure his autograph to this day after fancying him for over 50 years

Memorials are made by the descendents. Looks like his children never forgave him. Hence, no one bothered to make one for him. Very sad. He gave so much happiness to others. RiP. Thank you for posting. He was part of my childhood in that i grew up watching his films

It's a difficult one - his children might not have any say over his memorial as iI am guessing that his wife would have been next of kin and then it would be down to her to decide on a memorial - I do also wonder if it's all in hand and it's just a question of the time it takes for the earth to settle etc - it might be a simple as that - lets hope so! Thank you so much for your comment and for watching the video - it's always appreciated, thank you! xxxx

My aunt was in a couple of stage productions with Phillips in the 50s. In her later years, I used to weave him into the conversation at some point each time I saw her with the inevitable and predictable result. The whole family including her `very` twin sister was in on this, but for some reason she never caught on. `Young Lesley` must have made quite an impression. Mind you any mention of Kenneth Williams and one or two others tended to have the same effect, but Phillips was the favourite. Not too sure what she would have thought about the cat food tho`....

That's such a delightful story! It sounds like "Young Leslie" certainly did leave a lasting impression, becoming a staple in your family's conversations. It's amusing how certain names can evoke such strong reactions! As for the cat food mention, well, that might have been an unexpected twist in the tale (tail)! Thank you for your comment and for watching the video - much appreciated xxxx

@@BeautifulBadandBizarre Shar, I’ve just finished watching a re-run of an episode of “Midsomer Murders”, here in Australia. I had a feeling that one of the characters was Leslie Phillips, which the credits confirmed! How coincidental is that? Of course, he was the suave gent, with an eye for the ladies, appreciating one’s “magnificent ankles”! 😂 I was waiting for him to say, “Ding-dong”…😆 He played the part really well and, as you highlighted, he was an outstanding actor.♥️

Have you seen Leslie as " Mr. Bodley ", in the film, " Not Now , Darling ". My " hubby " played the role in " Am-Dram ", at Romsey, Hampshire.😊. A very funny play. I did prop's, set decorating, sound effects, and got a dummy ( mannequin) from Salisbury Theatre. It did turn a few heads as it rode along, nude, in the back of my car.😊 I think our cast did a good job, actually....😊📖😊🇬🇧.

I haven't!!! Although I have heard that "Not Now, Darling" is indeed a hilarious play, with Leslie Phillips's portrayal of Mr. Bodley being memorable. It must have been quite an adventure to be involved in an amateur production of it, especially with your roles behind the scenes. I'm sure your cast did a fantastic job bringing the play to life, and it sounds like you had some interesting moments, especially with the mannequin in the back of your car! Thank you for sharing your story-it sounds like a lot of fun! xxxx

@@BeautifulBadandBizarre Thank you for your positive comment.😊 The Am-Dram group we were with did 4 or 5 performances. A lot of work to prepare the set , e.g., I decorated it, hubby bought a chandelier for the "fur shop", hubby's father carpetted the whole stage, I devised a box of glass for off stage "accident " ( someone heard something and dropped a tray), I got some posh, striped curtains and made a cover for the central circular chair (the type sometimes seen in old films, in reception ), When time was running short before first night, I stayed alone in the hall, putting up wallpaper ! Bit scarey, cos no phone,( vandals) ( Iused a broom to apply glue to the paper, which had to be on the floor : tall walls ! ) Someone donated a real mink coat.... Someone ( else) took it after the last night... I found the hat, and kept that ! (Shhh!) I suspect the mink-taker might have destroyed the gorgeous coat, being strongly against the fur trade....so am I , but this was a period piece. and the mink was central to the story.... But despite the huge amount of work, it made happy memories, and got a good write - up in the local paper. I have to admit I much prefer the script of the play to the script of the film📖. Loved Leslie Phillips in the film, but my hubby did "get" the rogueish character of "Mr. Bodley" very well. So many laughs, and so much really funny " bits of business"😊 Interesting project. We still quote from it, 34 years later !😊📖🦉🌹💙🇬🇧

Happy Sunday Shar, and mine is. Have just watched your excellent bio- vid of Leslie Phillips. Sadly never saw him on stage but. His output of films, television and radio have given me,and thousands more people some great memories of his multi talented career. It's true to say,its hard to really know any actor, especially our favourites. The ones before Social Media!! They had mystery & mystique. I never knew anything about his early childhood. Of the times, but he seemed to have enjoyed his.Amazing how love& happiness can make up for a lack of martial things Hindsight is wonderful, glad to see he turned down the " Carry On's " Being of the age of " steam radio" i loved The Navy Lark😂 and whilst the ding- dong & Helllooo are well known I'd like to give a shout out for the nautical " 'er left hand down a bit " As Troutbridge sank another pier😂 You highlighted the saddest parts with tact and care& compassion. Early death of his dad( and what seems to have been traumatic event forced to view the body) The family suffering due to suicides can't have helped. And in later in life when Angela Scolar felt the need to leave the stage.I loved her in " you rang my lord" & "as time goes by " Why his is an unmarked grave i can't fathom. If the estate doesn't want to.I'd chip into a public fund and erect one, maybe the alleged brew ha har about his widow and the house 😢. Sorry this has been a right rambling comment, you've been away far to long and I've forgotten how to be pithy and to the point 😢 So glad to have you & your channel back❤😊 Until the next time best wishes & hugs Allan&Family xxx

Hello Allan! Thank you so much as ever for your absolutely lovely comment!!! You truly made my day! I'm so glad you enjoyed the Leslie Phillips video. It's true, the mystery and mystique of actors from the pre-social media era added a special charm. Their image was also more carefully cultivated as it were, these days anything goes! 'The Navy Lark'-classic humor! Just loved it! Also, thank you for your thoughtful reflections on Leslie's life and the challenges he faced - I think you're spot on! And your idea of a public fund for a grave marker is so thoughtful! I would imagine the reason there is no headstone yet could be that the land needs time to settle - I hope that's the reason and that there will be a memorial there soon xxx Your 'rambling' comment was a joy to read, so please carry on rambling lol and I'm grateful for your warm welcome back. Best wishes and hugs to you and your family! ❤️😊

I didn't know anything about his humble origins and that voice training certainly made him sound like no one else from Chingford I've ever known.
