Jamaican pride is alive and well. Simone Brown is a living breathing example of what it is to be Jamaican and to represent Jamaica in the best ways possible. Simone has an interesting story and background being born in Toronto then being raised in Jamaica then moving back to Toronto for University. Our sit-down explores the journey of Simone’s relationship with her own Jamaican identity which eventually compelled her to start the Jamaican non-profit organization 876 Volunteer

She’s right Throp! We love your podcast! Another great show. As someone who is in Toronto and has spent most of my career in the non-profit space I am so impressed with this young lady! Even though government funding in Canada fuels many organizations it’s the willingness of volunteers as well that has the grassroots impact. This had been so good for me as I continue to think about my own business and skills in career coaching and entrepreneurship and how Jamaica fits into it. Thanks again! I can totally relate. The last few years I went back to visit I was using the phrase "alms house business dat" and my childhood high school friends from the early 90s started laughing telling me lovingly that nobody used that expression anymore and also that younger people may not understand what I am saying. We had a good laugh. The expressions have changed for example during birthdays now I find modern Jamaicans wishing each other "happy earth strong." I have a hard time using the phrase because I have no idea where that came from. It didn't exist in my early 90s when I left there. Another expression is "ray taay taay". That one is new to me, too. Lol

I am in Texas over 30 years, now I am working directly with government efforts in Tourism & Culture. Lux Travel on KZbin, volunteering our talents to the country. I volunteer with the Reggae Month in the Diaspora. Now since 2019, I have been making a slow transition moving back to Jamaica after 30 years. 2021 to 2022 monthly visited to connect back into our culture. We have so much charities, however I encourage the majority to begin with their early childhood education schools, up to High School. I am a bit overwhelmed with all the foundation in Jamaica yet our early schools are forgotten. I bring back large groups from my church at Lakewood in Houston and Conference group over 200+ individuals to Jamaica, helping with project needs & hospitals. I truly support the Jamaica Government with their endeavors. I understand this young lady situation with diversity and diversifying. Outside the USA, I lived in other continents so I understand the treatment worldwide.

@@dvmine8985 I feel safer here in Canada 🇨🇦 than than I do in Jamaica 🇯🇲. I think it's more likely that I could get hurt by my own people here because we bring our dirty attitude with us every where we go.I know five business man that got killed on my mom's street in JA within a two mile distance and one was just across from my Mom's house. My Mom was a returned resident before her passing, could you imagine how scared she was. There's bad in every race, but are our own worst enemies right now .I shouldn't be be more scared of my own people than ......you know what I mean. No self-worth and vanity is destroying us, we just can't seems to like ourselves. Peace out. ✌️

@@leorobinson5737 we all see the world through our own lenses my cousin came here from August Town in Jamaica to attend college in America and was robbed at gunpoint thank god she was not killed all her life in Jamaica she had never seen a gun , the point here for me is of course you are more likely to be hurt by the people who you live and work amongst and that goes for white's as well as black's we are not worse or better than anyone. And as a Jamaican I know many Jamaican people who are good and decent people never throw the baby out with the bath water 90% good 10% bad .

Being OF JAMAICAN PARENT DOES NOT MAKE YOU JAMAICAN. ANYWAY YOU SOUND more JAMAICAN than CANADIAN. ENJOY THE CHOICE YOU MADE TO LIVE IN JAMAICA.

She did state that she came to Jamaica at 1 and went back to Toronto at 18 So she would speak like a Jamaican still since her entire childhood was here. She would not have a Toronto accent unless she chose to change it.

Wait a minute. Come home to Jamaica??? Telling people you are Jamaican is a joke!!! You were born in Toronto Canada so you are Canadian. You are Canadian first and now want to be Jamaican. If you want to be Jamaican then relinquish your Canadian citizenship. I have a huge problem with anybody that takes advantage of the Canadian government and it’s benefits. This goes to anyone that would do this. I’m guessing the first problem with your health you will come right back to Toronto. You can’t want both!!!
