This Nintendo Switch Lite was sent to a repair shop to fix, however they weren't able to. The owner then listed the Switch on eBay to sell as faulty, and we picked it up!

Joey the caps that are known as the "cpu caps" are simply a 1V8 rail. That line goes to every single IC on the board including RAM, CPU, MAX77620, MAX77812, M92T36, MAX17050, Backlight IC, LCD driver, game card PMIC, audio IC etc. Just because that cap is short doesn't mean the board is dead. It could be a number of issues causing that short. Take another look mate. Generally if the CPU is dead the CPU will get immediately hot with just the battery plugged in, even if the battery is virtually dead

Just pinned your comment pal so hopefully it rectified any information for anyone watching going forward ☺️ Thanks for the feedback once again! Out of interest, would you just remove all of the components you’ve named one by one until the short has gone? Or is there individual ways to measure the components you’ve listed before having to remove them?

@@JoeyDoesTech good stuff mate, didn't want to sound like a know it all but there's too many people who are under the impression that it always means a dead cpu and it's not the case. You can try injecting 1v but a lot of the time I just remove components until the short disappears. It could still be the CPU but as I said it's not always the case

@@JoeyDoesTech The two "shorted" caps around the MAX ic (the one South the CPU) are just low impendence, around 20 Ohm. Alsways use resistance Mode to Check back. Only if it's under 10 Ohm you can Tell it's a short. Also the middle cap left of the backsidr Max ic is low (same line as the other 2 caps)

Or another possibility is the shop botched it and didn't try putting it back together before shipping it to customer and just told him it was already present.

Unfortunately as soon as I saw the repair shop took 4 months to get back to the customer I knew they messed it up beyond repair and might have been waiting for a board to replace it. You are right Joey as soon as you measure shorts on those two caps the board can be tossed.

That's incorrect mate. The caps that are known as the "cpu caps" are simply a 1V8 rail. It could be a number of issues causing that short. Most of the misconceptions about the CPU being definitively dead are a myth created by a bunch of phone techs who don't know what they're talking about. I don't want to sound like a d**k but people need to stop spreading this myth.

Nice diagnostics skills right there. Only thing I would of done to save lots of time is inject 1V into each main rail around MAX77620 with that IC removed. That would tell you which rail was shorting as well as let the component drawing the current to heat up

One thing I see being overlooked is the Maxx IC. It is a power management BGA chip, which means you may need to get into some basic re-balling. it is actually quite easy.. Ask Phil where he got his latest stencils for solder pastie. Cheers Joey!

for future reference, its easier to remove the coils and measure for shorts before and after the coils, then removing the chip

A damaged USB connector can put a direct voltage straight into the CPU killing it instantly. I am finding recently that the switch lite models seem to have a broader range of potential faults compared to the standard switch. I have had to do more re-balling of power management ICs and fuel gauge chips as well as failed mosfets, back-light chips etc. Quite a rabbit hole with these. Karl

Appreciate your taking the time to walk through this. Your initial assumption of bad cpu was correct and it is helpful to have it confirmed. Next time those particular caps are shorted, you should be safe to assume bad cpu and move on to something else. Great video!

That repair shop sitting their ass on the Lite for 4 months, just to do a mediocre job at swapping the charging port and not even put any screws back in is disgraceful. If you cannot fix it, then just admit to that. Not every repair is doable. Just charge a fee for the attempt and return the Switch fully assembled. That's the bare minimum. At least it gave all of us, and you, a good learning experience.

its possible they deliberately killed the board or they swaped it for a known bad board and gave it back to the customer
@soulmourne2698

The repair shop might have ruined that switch to be honest, a short might have killed the cpu, thats what happens lots of times in switches, if it has a bad charging port or shorted port sometimes high voltage goes to the cpu and kills it, it could have died before going to the repair shop but they could have also broken it in that repair shop

I don't understand how some "repair" shops take in jobs that they have no experience with and try fixing it. This makes us repair shops look bad. You're pretty much "trying" to fix something to learn how to do it at the customer's expense. What if you damage something, are you gonna pay for it or is the customer stuck with it? SMH
