This was vert helpful. I am a 12 year old aspiring ATC. My dad did all the training but quit right before he could start because it was too stressful for him. He has been teaching me different things ATC's say. This was such a cool video.

Stefan outstanding VLOG. I almost became a controller in 1990 in the States, scored a 99 on the written, had the interview and physical at SFO tower and was fast tracked and then I received a letter that the FAA was in a hiring freeze. Oh well that would have been just as enjoyable as a pilot. My father was an airline pilot for 31 years and he told me that the stress and burn out rate in that environment is higher.

Great video. If I knew you were there at the time I would have said hi. The scene where you show the two controllers with an instructor in the sim in the Learning Academy I was only 10 meters or so away. I’m retraining as an approach controller after 8 years as an enroute controller. Your videos inspired me to get back into flying after not having flown since 2014. Keep up the good work.

@@StefanDrury or @renzy, how do sims work. I'd love be curios to see why you need need a physical sim vs a virtual on VR or so? Also why do you need other people being pilots, can't there be bots that operate as pilots?

The ATC center was much different than I imagined. The big computer screens are a far cry to the old CRT type that people usually picture in their head. As for the question about new pilots getting over the fear of talking to ATC, I've found that watching piloting videos where the ATC is patched in to the audio is a great way to learn how to talk on the radio.

Great video stefan, I was lucky enough to work for ASA in the Mechanical services department for a few years (my father was in the electrical department for 40) In the old tower we had a great view of the airport and it was always a major distraction, I would stop and watch every plane I could. I even remember sitting on the roof of YMMB and watching Helicopters coming and going while i was supposed to be fixing their AC.
@jimiemick
@jimiemick 6 жыл бұрын
Also I did hear a rumour that the old tower will not actually be removed when bld 172 ( i think its 172) is knocked down, But then again ASA tend to knock down buildings and replace them a few years later just for laughs.

A good method to train phraseology is to use virtual networks (Like IVAO) to train communication and procedures. That's what is used and worked perfectly. A lot of very good people simulating ATC positions. (US, Brit, CAN or AUS).

That’s funny, when I am in a plane coming in to land at Canberra airport, the approach controllers are in Melbourne. Never knew or suspected that!!

Yeah I know, and Adelaide approach is based there too. Plus you can be almost 9hours out of Melbourne on your way to the Middle East and you're still talking to Melbourne Centre!
