I am a beginner and watched sooo many videos from other amateurs that popped up before yours. Not sure why that is, but I am so relieved to have found you!! I had just done the same alteration last night and stopped before adjusting the pockets. Now I can finish my project with confidence after seeing your video!! Yours by far was one of the most helpful and concise explanations with such beautiful results! Thank you! You have gained a new subscriber :)

Thank you so much for this. I ordered a pair and by the time they arrived, I had dropped 4 inches off my waist (where the jeans sit). I'm definitely gonna put your technique in to practice. I can't see any other solution

How could I go about this with jeans that have double welt pockets on the back? The jeans in question luckily already have darts there that I just wanted to take in, but the pockets have me worried honestly. They’re one of my partner’s fave pairs of pants and they’re 3-4 inches too big for him now, and I want his wallet/phone to still fit in the pockets. My sewing skill mostly lays in creating from scratch, not alterations unfortunately ahah

I can't say for sure without seeing them, but you would probably be better off taking them in at the sides and possibly also the centre back, depending on how much is being taken in. I don't have a video on this (and don't work at Levi's anymore), but there are probably tutorials on KZbin. I wouldn't advise altering down the pockets if they're welt pockets because it'd be hard or maybe impossible to get them neat, and they'd be narrower at the tops. Sorry I couldn't be more help. :)

Why not just go and buy another pair? Too complicated, and too much time.

Not everyone can buy their clothes firsthand :)

Here are a few reasons why: This would take two hours or less for someone who does it to a few pairs of jeans, and both new and thrifted jeans cost a lot more than two hours of labour. Altering thrifted jeans is also cheaper than an pair of new, specialty jeans (curvy, petite, plus, tall, etc). Some people can only get perfectly fitting jeans if they buy them custom, so alterations may be the only, and therefore the best, way to get well-fitting jeans. Also, at least for women’s jeans, most jeans don’t fit anyone well. Clothes look best when they fit (even oversized and tight clothes look better with care for the proportion of the outfit silhouette and proportion of the person’s body! It’s why two people can wear the exact same outfit yet one can look more “fashionable”). People who lose weight can alter their favourite pants instead of needing to replace them, or they can alter an *almost* perfect pair of pants (colour, length, fabric, etc) to be *the* perfect pair of pants. . Some people like customizing their clothes. Of course, for some people, spending the money is preferable for the ease and convenience, and that’s their choice!! But if they choose to alter them, one can a) reduce fabric waste, one of the highest global garbage and pollution contributors, b) save money, and c) make better use of the clothes they already have.

Because it's become a lost skill that a lot of people are trying to learn. Everyone's clothes used to be tailored, but now we just have to try on 100 pairs of jeans to find one that fits right. I personally have several pairs of jeans that fit in the butt/hips but are too big around the waist; being able to tailor my clothes to fit my body perfectly will be a game changer 😊
