In 1989 I was a freshman in high school. Back when people would beat you up to steal your shoes or starter jacket/pullover. I had these in 89. Materials and construction can evolve over 30 years. Jordan 3,4,5 and 6 are the only ones I collect. To me these are the best styles ever. All in all they did a good job on the 2019 pair.

I’m 53 years old, the 89 OG had the hard, thick plastic Nike Air hang tag, also had the ball chain, I still have one OG tag from my 89’s, back then I’d put them on my keychain. As far as the seams showing grey predominant lines back then when they were new they did not show super, after wearing them they seemed to be more pronounced, at least from my recollection, this material on the 2019 seems a bit thinner and doesn’t show much initially, maybe over time it will become more pronounced with wearing them routinely.
@lesgrant78612 жыл бұрын
Facts 💯, on what you said. The Nike Air was a three-dimensional piece of plastic. I'm 45 and I had them back in 89 and I was in 6 or 7th grade but I didn't even have the real man's OG I had the junior size for like $89, instead of the men's which was $109-$120 then we had Nike air on the back but it wasn't three dimensional like the men's size. I own a bunch of bred retros now but the 1989 real one is so rare in decent shape.

Yep, kzbin.info/www/bejne/bX21hZqAaayHpbc My thoughts exactly. I had these also in 11th grade and vividly remember the hard plastic tag with the ball and chain. LOL, I did the same thing also. I got my drivers license in Summer 1989 and that handtag was on my car keys! 😁

Whenever they remaster a shoe it should be so close to the original you can hardly tell the difference besides the age. But Jordan is exceptionally Lazy -Boxed toe area -No white Lining -Overall shape The approach is like they don’t know much about the original 😒🤷🏾♂️✌🏾

Another big difference they've unfortunately missed every time since 99 is the shine on the netting. OG and 99 have that stickier finish that picks up light hitting it, instead of just the dull matte netting they continued with on 19. Always reminded me of a metal fence you'd see at hoop playgrounds

I had that shoe. Bro that shoe caught on late. People were not feeling it at first. It was just dedicated jordan fans. Then buy the summer it was a frenzy. Nike dropped sum dope flight jordan gear that year also... One of the reason it caught on was black became a dope color to ROCK. This is when NWA was hitting hard and RAIDERS starter gear was poppin.

Wow! You did it! You found the 89 original for the comparison! Great, great, great review here! This has been my favorite shoe since 1989. I've actually worn and played in an 89 pair and I can tell you it was so light compared to shoes of that time. The sole was really responsive and there were no issues of material or construction problems in that Era that I remember. When the black released it sold out immediately cause it was a playoff shoe. The white cement stayed on the shelf and the white red which came out to our city that summer. The military blue people complained about cause it didn't go with the Bulls uniform but it looked so good. It was such a different design than anything else people were wearing that it stood out. All except for the 89 high and low flight shoes with the same sole. Thank you for going above and beyond with this review! I really appreciated it.

I still have my 89 OG pair. To answer your question the 89 pair came with the hard thick clear and orange tag. The lighter all orange tag actually came with the Nike Flights or Flight 89s back in the day. The Flights Scottie Pippen wore and the have the same midsole and soles as the J 4s. Once again great Video my man!

I have an OG 89 pair of BRED sz.12. The uppers look pretty good, some cracking. The midsoles are crust just like your pair. Bottoms look good still have wear left. I plan on restoring them with midsole replacement from Flight 89 or something similar. The two things about the OGs is the tongue and the insoles. The tongue on the OGs is rounded more where the 99s were squared, that really pissed me off! I always hated that and I got rid of my 99s a couple years ago when they started to fall apart. The insoles on the OG IVs & Vs were squishy, I always loved that when I had Vs back in 1990. The 99s didnt have that shit, I don't know about the new ones. I would consider getting the 19s, just because of what they are and how cool the look...I just want to restore the OGs...the insoles are still squishy and I used to wear them sometimes about 15 years ago...the shoes are priceless glad I never sold them...

After looking at the 2012 black cement release the lines are so much sleeker and have just a better overall shape of the shoe compared to the 2019. The black phylon mud guard the wraps around the heel of the shoe has more of a linear angle (which is true for earlier retro 4 releases) that meets the grey outrigger piece of the outsole. I like how the black mud guard doesn't slope downward as it approaches the grey lateral outrigger of the shoe on the 2012 pair. It seems as time progresses with the 4's the start look more and more like they are bootlegged. I understand that subtle changes are made to distinguish the progression but at this point they are too drastic in my opinion.

I wish JB would've kept the black midsole linear as it slants toward the midfoot outrigger. The 4's midsole lines have drastically changed since the '99 release let alone the originals from '89. Even the midfoot outrigger's peak dont have complementary angles on both sides of them. The side of the outrigger's peak on the side of the toe is abrupt and not gradual like the opposite side. Those little things always stand out for me in terms of the changes that have taken place since the original release.

The one outstanding feature of the black cement 4 are the grayish white accents from the cuts on the nubuck. It gave the shoe accents not provided on the 2019 release. It may not seem like much but it gave the shoe depth. It's kind of the reason why I copped the "Dunk from Above" 4's....great vid!

The 2019 black cement release still gets under my skin. To me they look bootlegged for s few reasons. The first thing JB dropped the ball on is the off centered logo on the heel (anguish). Second, the shape you mentioned contributes to the bootlegged unauthorized look to the shoe. Third, I wish they had that layered look from the durabuck where you could see the subtle hits of grey on the cuts of durabuck. I doubled up because I'm a 4 enthusiast but I still feel that sting with this release!

I think the nostalgia factor with og retros is overlooked/underrated . I was born a year after these originally released but I definitely remember seeing them growing up, some deadstock, some on TV but most were worn. I remember just having the literal feeling of “oh man these are FRESH AS FUCK!” every time I came across a pair and not even realizing what I was feeling. Before, J’s were worn because of the GOAT himself and the undeniable style/aesthetic/flavor was a huge bonus. Anyways being from Chicago just brings it all back full circle, gives us (Chicagoans) a greater since of pride when it comes to this Jordan culture. What a great comparison story on the Jordan 4s releases in '89, '99, and '12. Since middle school, I always wanted a pair of Jordan 4 Breds, but my single mom couldn't afford them. When the Jordan 5s were released in 1990 I thought I would never see the Jordan 4's again. Little did I know at the time that there were going to be several re-releases of the same Jordan 4s in the coming decades. Just last year the Jordan 4 Black Canvas were released and I copped a pair. As much as I love the black canvas I still love to have a pair of the Jordan 4 breds. Well, someone was selling a used pair on Facebook marketplace for $150. I couldn't resist so I purchased them from the seller. According to the tag inside they were manufactured just this past year. They were in great condition, with only slight scruffs here and there. Thirty-four years was worth the wait. 😏😊☺️

I was 14 years-old in 1989 and on my Junior High basketball team. That was the first Air Jordan to get a lot of buzz. The Air Jordan 3s came out in 1988 and it wasn't a must have sneaker. They were a bit heavy but definitely cool. When the 4s came out there was a guy in our grade who had all of the color-ways which not a lot of people did back then. You usually picked a color and that was it. It also was the first time that the release date started to become a big deal. The next year the 5s came out in 1990 and I remember getting them a few days after the release. At the time there was a big buzz around getting them on day 1. This was pre Internet so you didn't even know what they looked like until the release day. The other way you were able to see the shoes before the release date is if you caught MJ during pre-game warm ups. I was at a game where the Bulls played the Pistons in late 1990 and he wore the 6s in pre-game warm ups. This was months before they were released to the public. They may have even been prototype versions because he didn't wear them in the actual game.

I don’t understand why Nike just won’t make remasters identical? I’m sure they have blueprints to the originals. They probably have pairs from the 80s stashed away in great condition. I got two pairs of the 2019’s and not really impressed.
@mjo23dan5 жыл бұрын
I’ve gone over this in previous videos. It’s just not that simple. It takes a great amount of resources. Even some that may not be available anymore because companies that produced them no longer exist or Nike isn’t able to reuse them because of patents not owned by them. There’s a lot of different reasons that go into this not to mention being cost efficient and being profitable despite quality applications.

One other comment the toe box on the OG pair was originally actually more like the 2019 pair when they were new. The toe box would actually flatten out from the wear and tear on the shoe. That’s why it looks like it angles back on the 89 pair in your video. So they actually did a great job on the toe box shape.

Compared to photos and other videos I’ve seen, the shape and toe slant of the OG is much more sleek compared to today’s retros. Something that the brand has moved away from over the years.

With the 3s and 4s Jordan and Tinker were so ahead of their time.

just found your channel. I subscribed because, you are real, you are humble, and your my age. LOL thanks for the information, I have always loved NIKE and the Jordan line even though I only ever got one pair. I had the 5's. Its fun to reminisce.

I wish I kept my pair from '89... I kept them until 1993. By then they were sitting in a pile of shoes in the laundry room. I'm sure my mom just trashed them along with other shoes that weren't being worn. I clearly remember how the felt on my feet, they had a spongy insole and had some weight. The 99' was close, 2012 was ok, and 2019 looks like a replica.

it hurts my heart to see that deadstock 4 oxidize like they were worn. that's why I just rock them but respect to keeping them in mint condition.

Restoration methods have advanced these days if I wanted to bring them to life. I’ve had my time with a worn double back then so I’m not sweatin it. Thanks for checking the vid.

The fours on do the right thing were actually a PE with the colorful lace lock on the front and LS holes instead of the caging in front and around the laces

I wished Jordan Brand retro all of the OG Jordan 4s with the exact 1989 cut and design that you have on hand. 😞

Just a few tips to improve your video/channel, create sections such as comparisons or my thoughts so it's easier for viewers to find your content. Also maybe get yourself a white lazy susan so you can rotate the shoe smoothly while zoomed on in details. Other than that great video. New subscriber here! Also, you didn't mention the hight defference on the pull tab. 2019 is significantly taller. Unless I missed that part.

Since you’re new, I have a playlist section that divides up my videos by topic if you haven’t looked through my channel page yet. Also, I incorporate b-roll/up-close shots at either the beginning or end of my videos. Check out my style throughout my different videos I’ve done. Thanks for tuning in.

@mjo23dan did you see the little orb (insect maybe) pass behind your head from left to right of screen? Look at minute 16:38 and on.
