I’m a prime lens shooter forever, but if I go to super wide zoom or extra long zoom….then they work very nicely, coz when I have to resort these type of lens it means I can get back far enough or get in close enough. With these lens I do use the whole zoom range.

The RF 28-70 is a beast of a lens. Superb image quality, but big and bulky. As a wedding shooter I have a challenged relationship with it. IQ is great but it’s a beast of a lens to carry around a whole wedding day. Still, I love it.

Totally makes sense, for weddings it really is great. But I’m sure by the end of the day you just want to put it down and never pick it up again.

I see it as a starting off lens. Its my first normal zoom and as such its great (just insanelly bulky, feels worse than my 100-500mm.) but even my super cheap 85mm 1.8 renders backgrounds nicer. If I had a fast 35/50mm prime as well I wouldnt really consider this lens. Definitly not a prime killer as some are saying.

Hi Eric, good to see another video. I fully understand your thoughts and how primes work best for you. I tend to find that it is how I feel on the day of the shoot, what lenses I take, unless I'm doing sports or wildlife when the lenses almost pick themselves. I also find that since switching to M4/3 my main objective is to pack as light as possible, limiting myself to a small Billingham messenger bag, whereas when I had my Canon system with assorted L lenses I wanted to take it all in a back pack, the just "in case" scenario. However, now I mainly decide what zoom I will require on the day and support that with a couple of primes or another zoom. As a footnote, I don't think there are many bad zooms around like there used to be, so I'm far more confident in my selections.

That’s a good strategy! And I agree, the quality of zooms is basically on par with the primes, at lease in the mid-aperture range.

Great timing for this… I’ve moved over to primes and enjoy using them. When traveling I have the less expensive f1.8s in 16, 35, 50 & 85 which work great as they are small and light and can easily carry around a couple lenses all day for the week. Yes, sometimes I wish I had my L Series lenses with me so was considering a zoom but I find myself using the 16 and 85 most often and don’t think I’d be happy with the 28 - 70 range. So I’ll probably keep expanding my L Series lenses to match the 1.8s.

That’s a great way to go. I’ve been having fun shooting with just a 24 and 135 lately.

my usual combo for events is 28 / 50 and 85. i am considering getting the 28-70 for fast-paced events that I am shooting

The 28-70 is a great lens if you need to switch focal lengths and you don’t have the 10 seconds it would take to change lenses. So for those fast paced events, it is a must have and you will absolutely love it.

Gee, I have always been a fan of f4.0 zooms and fast primes, mostly because f4 works so well for so much, and f1.4 primes have that magic look (35&85 are my favorites but 135 is the lens. Too bad mine’s manual focus at f2.3). I could never come to terms with the size of the RF 28-70 f2.0. I almost never use my 70-200 f2.8 because it is so heavy. I do love the 3 primes in a bag approach. I’m actually very happy with the small f1.8 RF primes (24,35,50,mm)that Canon is making, not perfect but pretty good. Easy to carry. Ps I really miss the green belt trail. Don’t have much like that here in Fla.

It really depends on what your favourite primes are. Mine are Leica 35/1.4 and 75/1.4 lenses, this is a nice substitute with blazing fast photo/video AF, I just set it at 35 as a default setting and move on from there to 28, 50 or 70.

Yeah that makes sense. I’ll usually just have 2 lenses with me, so 24 and 50 or 35 and 135, etc.

I just picked up the rf 100 because I want to get into macro a bit. This is my 1st prime. I happened to drive by a horse and the 100 was already mounted so I rolled down my window and took a few shots. Normally I would have used my rf 70-200 f4. I’ve got to say i was absolutely blown away at how sharp the lens is. The 70-200 is an l lens and it’s really good but……. I may get hooked on a couple more primes.

But the F2.8 Lenses have 24 mm amd the F2 doesnt .. my 24-70 is mainly used on the 24 mm end ...RF Zooms are weak I admit as an example the 70-200 f2.8 RF cant even take a Teleconvertor. I love my Z Nikon 24-70 f2.8 Lens and the other No 1 in its class the Z 70-200 f2.8
