A Review of the Ratio Six - How I Drink Coffee Every Morning

The Ratio Six is a coffee maker that essentially simulates a pourover, making you an amazing cup of coffee in the morning. This is a review that highlights what I love about it, and what I find frustrating - and I tell how how it stacks up against my previous machine, the Bonavita Metropolitan.

Nice video Drew - I've seen a trick on youtube so that you don't get that splash. You lift the filter basket up into the shower head then slide out the carafe. You then remove the filter basket and you won't have any splash. Same thing when you are putting those items in place. Put the filter basket on first and lift it up into the shower head then slide the carafe in under it.

My mom is a stickler for cleanliness. She hates condensation or coffee drips on her kitchen counter. This Ratio Six probably makes an excellent cup of coffee but if I bought this for my mom she'd return it and get a Mr. Coffee from Bed, Bath, & Beyond for $49.

Nice review, Drew! Indeed it’s not easy to find detailed information. Have been looking for the manual but no luck. I’m very interested in this machine but concerned about the cleaning/descaling regime and additional cleaning product investment.Wondering if you can shed some light on that subject? Perhaps another video?

I’ve yet to descale the machine but it feels just like any other coffee maker. The brew basket is super easy to clean, so it’s really just a matter of keeping water mineral build up from happening inside the lines. I’ll report back if I have any issues :)

I can't quite justify the price to automate pour over coffee that I can do myself (and, I really just have fun doing it). But I think I might buy that insulated carafe, separately. It has a flat top that seems ideal for setting a large manual brewer on.

Hi Drew. Awesome and informative video. I currently have a Cafe Smart Brewer. But I'm not getting consistent results, so I'm leaning towards getting this ratio 6. I normally brew about 4 cups. How much coffee do you put in? Medium grind? Thanks!

I went with the Moccamaster Select and haven't looked back paired with my Baratza Encore grinder. Build quality is 10/10 the ease of use and the speed of which the copper element heats the water is top tier in my book. and the selection of replacement parts is nice knowing if you ever need something a lot of places carry it. but was considering Ratio Six.

Drew I think you put in the filter basket first, squish it up, slide in the bottom carafe part, and then let the basket rest down on the carafe. When you remove, just reverse the process: hold up the basket and slide the carafe out first.

This coffee maker is similar to my Brim Pour Over it just has more parts/pieces as well as the ability to keep the coffee insulated for heat retention.

Dont worry about the machine leaching plastics……the carafe is its coated its leaching plenty of plastics for you. Glass carafe would mitigate it somewhat.

Thanks for the review. I think the only thing from this machine which has me a bit hesitant is the fact that the basket comes off and requires a separate disc to hold it after the brew is done. I would like to know why they went with this design decision. It seems the more parts that have to come off as part of the process, the more cumbersome it is for brewing and pouring. I'm accustomed to having just the carafe come off to pour and only removing the basket when washing it, not while its hot. At the very least they should have designed it to allow the disc + carafe to sit inside the machine instead requiring it to sit outside where it can be either misplaced or simply taking up additional counter space.

this is a good point. for me, it isn't that big of a deal because i take the basket straight to the trash, give it a rinse, then put it in a drying rack before it all goes back together. but i definitely think this is a bit more cumbersome than it needs to be

Great review! Just got my Ratio 6 in and loving it. Great simple coffee machine with an impeccable build quality. Question for you, I’m having a hard time dialing in the best grind size. I use a baratza encore grinder, any suggestions? (I brew 4 cups as well) Thanks!

It's incredible to me that it doesn't have an ON-OFF switch or a PAUSE button and relies on a magnet, preventing you from easily using a Chemex and forcing you to use their carafes with the integrated magnets. If the magnet loses connection with the base, you have to start the whole bloom-brew process over again. Just silly. I had to extract the magnet from my carafe and then tape it to the base to be able to use my Chemex, but you have to switch off the power to the coffee maker once it's done.

Why would you opt for a coffee maker that has so many plastic parts? Plastic leaches chemicals into water once it reaches 158° F. Coffee makers typically heat water around 195°-205° F. There are automatic coffee makers that are made without plastic....

i am! lately i've been making coffee just for myself, and often opting for a simple pourover. but when i'm making coffee for others, have friends staying with me, or simply need a big pot of coffee to get through the day, i love the Ratio

I bought this in my opinion sleek looking coffee machine Ratio 6 a year ago. There’s one major annoying feature in it: with the top on, you cannot pour coffee from the carafe without coffee spilling all over the place. That lid mechanism is probably just too complex for a clean pour. Disappointed.

the carafe lid is hit or miss for me. sometimes it's perfectly fine, while others times it dribbles a bit, while other times it spills. definitely the weakest part of the machine.
