Hi. Great tutorial! How would you approach a left hand arpeggio or a descending arpeggio in the right hand when doing the 90 degree rotation and glissando practice? In the left hand Counterclockwise rotation seems to be against forward flow and clockwise rotation feels awkward. Thanks!

I have discoverved that beginning arpeggios starting on a white key followed be a bla ck key (d, e, a for instance) with the 2nd finger fits the hand more covenveniently. Correspondingly start with a black key moving to white key etc.

Yes, for the same reason e or b major scales are more comfortable then c major actually. It’s a foundation of Chopin’s approach to piano playing.

Should we use the pedal during arpeggios? I can't seem to get my thumb to land smoothly in the RH. Also, arpeggios seem easier in my non-dominate hand (the LH). Not sure why that would be the case but the RH is giving me the most challenges when it comes to arpegios

Yes we usually use pedal for arpeggios, especially in a faster tempo where physical connection is not an option. This is a very insightful video. Do you suggest then that in all instances arpeggios should be played without tucking the thumb under the palm? I guess shifting can also be applied to scales? Your method seems to be more gentle on the thumb which takes the same role as the other fingers (moving up and down rather then sideways). Anyway, the method you propose seems to be more efficient, less painful but would need a lot of practice for fast arpeggios/scales.

It seems like they connect because motions are close to the keyboard. But physical connection in any vivid tempo will ruin your passages. I tell this as a professional pianist.

How could I not get good with such a beautiful piano and studio space with youth, and youthful flexibility, mental and physical, to support my efforts. As it is I guess I will press on with my creaky joints and noisy complaining neighbours and an instrument of unknown origin with a couple of keys that stick down if pressed too hard. Yes and no. I have the sheet music for this one, and while it does help if you're practicing forearm rotation, it takes WAY too long to run through for even a single key. If you're gonna do this exercise consistently, I recommend simplifying it to just the major and minor arpeggios. No need to run through the dominant 7s etc. Be smart with your time! And for the sheet music, look up something to the effect of "11 arpeggios from C"

Inversions of D7 are also very common in music. But they are less comfortable and therefore need more training. If you wish to cut edges, I’d rather suggest playing inversions of D7 as an exercise, which by default include triads. Also, it’s not necessary to play any exercise from all keys within one day. You could switch the key each day or even on a weekly basis.
